Exam Schedule

Here are the exam schedules for this semester. It is important for every student to check the exam schedule carefully. Any conflicts should be reported to the office immediately. You may click on the link to obtain a full-size, printable copy of these documents.

Some courses will have culminating activities as a final assessment as an alternative to a final exam. These assessments take place outside of the exam schedule during regularly scheduled classes as follows. It is important to note that it is critical that students be in attendance for these scheduled culminating activities as they are treated much like an exam in that if it is missed without a satisfactory excuse they stand to receive a mark of zero. <br>

Confederation Secondary School hosts “Drive Aware, Not Impaired” OSAID Conference

For Confederation High School students Caitlin Monzon and Marissa Roy, the Festive RIDE program has a very personal meaning. They have seen its full effect in the most hazardous way.

Fellow Confederation students Jazmine Houle and Steven Philippe, as well as St. Charles College student Caitlin Jelley, were killed by a drunk driver in 2009. The three teens were walking along the shoulder of Municipal Road 80, near Gatien Street in Hanmer, when they were struck and killed.

Monzon and Roy were among several students involved with the Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID) program who hit the street with police officers and volunteers from Operation Red Nose, MADD Sudbury and Action Sudbury to kick off the annual initiative, Nov. 28. “This is a way to let people know drinking and driving is not a good thing and to encourage them to stop,” Monzon said. “We have had friends who have been victims of drinking and driving, and in a community as small as this, it hits really hard.”

Think before you drink, advises Greater Sudbury Police Service chief Frank Elsner. Local law enforcement services set up the first spot check of the season in Val Caron. More than a dozen officers from GSPS, the Ontario Provincial Police and RCMP were on hand to talk with drivers in an effort to put the cork on impaired driving, the country’s No. 1 criminal cause of death, Elsner said. Spot checks will be randomly set up throughout the city every day until Dec. 31. Elsner said the program allows police services to showcase the education side of enforcement.

The students, who belong to Ontario Students Against Impaired Driving (OSAID), attended the kick off of Action Sudbury’s annual Red Ribbon Campaign, Nov. 25 at the Travelodge Hotel. Officers and volunteers even handed out coffee coupons to drivers, as well as information about drinking and driving to motorists who abstained from consuming alcohol.

“Unfortunately, (impaired driving) is an issue all year long, but there are a lot more holiday festivities taking place between now and New Years, so we’re getting out the message that we’re going to be conducting spot checks at all times of the day.”

Folks should still enjoy themselves, he said, but before they have that first drink, they need to devise a plan to get home.

That’s where partners like Operation Red Nose come into play, Elsner said. For a donation, Red Nose volunteers ferry people safely home in their own cars.

Operation Red Nose is a much better option than potential alternatives associated with impaired driving, he said. Ending up in the back of a police car would put a damper on the holidays, but that could be better than more severe outcomes.

“Worst case scenario, either they or someone else ends up getting a ride in a hearse,” Elsner said. “As police officers, we cannot stress enough the carnage that can result from drinking and driving. If the country had as many homicides as there were deaths that occur from drinking and driving, there would be a huge outcry across Canada.”

From Greater Sudbury to El Salvador

Staff and students from Confederation Secondary School recently shipped school supplies and clothing to children in an orphanage in El Salvador, including teacher Jennifer Stobo, left, and Grade 10 students Sydney Boivin and Matthew St. Jean. Students visited the orphanage when they built homes as part of a Habitat for Humanity project during the March break.

The excursion gave students an opportunity to see how others live and, in the process, gain a renewed sense of appreciation for what they have here at home. "This was a highly rewarding experience for everyone who participated," said teacher Jennifer Stobo. "We know the school supplies and clothing that were recently shipped are much-needed and will certainly be well received."

“Character development is an important component of what we teach in Rainbow Schools,” said Confederation Secondary School Principal Mike Mirka. “Character development is all about instilling strong values in young people and building responsible and respectful citizens who care about the world in which they live. It is certainly very gratifying to see our young people make a difference on a global level.”

Lights, Camera, Action: Zack Werner films Evolutionary’s 30th anniversary tour

Evolutionary’s 30th Anniversary ‘Bring it to the Wall’ Tour takes place from May 25th to 29th, 2010. The Confederation Secondary School band will embark on a whirlwind tour of Southern Ontario, performing four concerts in four days. They will begin in Lindsay and Belleville where Zack Werner, Canadian Idol judge and president of Venus Records, will join them. Other concert locations include Cornwall and Carleton Place.

When Zack Werner visited Confederation Secondary School last November, he brought along a film crew to shoot footage for a trailer to pitch a ten episode reality series about Evolutionary. “The trailer/pitch so far is spectacular. Now I want to make it unbelievable,” Werner recently said in an email to the band. “This is the time of your lives and I feel so lucky to get a chance to capture it on film and then show it to the world. We are hoping to sell this trailer to major entertainment channels nationally and internationally. Who knows? Maybe by this time next year, you may be rock stars on a reality TV series.”

Music Director Norm McIntosh said students can expect a grueling four days. “They will get a first hand look at life on the road as they experience long hours of traveling on the bus as early as 5:45 am, unloading sets and equipment, setting up, performing, re-loading and then moving on to the next venue.”

He added: “The band and crew have worked hard all year long to prepare for this tour. They are also responsible for all the fundraising that is required to pay for the trip.” Evolutionary looks forward to working with Zack Werner and his crew again. “The students are especially excited to have been invited to drop in at Werner’s 100 acre farm for a swim, a volleyball game, and a barbecue,” said McIntosh.

“We are so proud of our students in Evolutionary and what they are accomplishing,” said Confederation Secondary School Principal, Mike Mirka. “On Saturday, May 8th, our school gym was packed with a crowd of close to 800 for the band’s annual Mother’s Day concert. The band received several standing ovations throughout the evening.” He added: “It is an honor to have someone of Zack Werner’s caliber interested in shooting a reality series about our Evolutionary.”

Evolutionary is a 25-piece rock band with a 16-member stage crew. The band set the Guinness World Record in 2007 for the deepest concert below sea level under the earth’s crust when they played a concert at the 3,400 ft. level at Vale Inco’s North Mine. As Northern Ontario’s No Drinking and Driving Band, Evolutionary promotes this important message at all of its concerts.

El Salvador Trip

Seven students from Confederation Secondary School recently travelled to El Salvador where they built homes as part of a Habitat for Humanity project. Grade 10 students Alison Laviolette, Sydney Boivin, Kendra Salminen, Craig Robinson and Matthew St. Jean and Grade 11 students Corrine McAnulty and Deanna Hall enjoyed an exceptional learning experience. Teachers Jennifer Stobo, Jana Armstrong and Gilbert Briscoe accompanied the students along with volunteer Phyllis Briscoe.

During their excursion, which took place from March 5th to March 18th, 2010, the team completed a house in Nahuizalco, El Salvador. From a curriculum perspective, the journey enhanced what’s taught in the classroom in a number of subject areas, from citizenship and history to geography and technological education. The students not only learned construction skills, they also learned team building and cooperation skills. They saw how others live and, in the process, gained a renewed sense of appreciation for what they have here at home.

“The work was physically demanding and the experience was emotionally changing,” said teacher Jennifer Stobo. “Observing the people in El Salvador live and care for each other taught students the importance of family. They also learned the value of hard work and helping others. This was a highly rewarding experience for everyone who participated.”

Confederation Girls Bring Home the Gold

Girls Overcome!

Overcome by sadness and anger and rage. Overcome by fear and wonder and mourning. Overcome by injuries and pain. Overcome by joy and celebration. If one word describes the Confederation Chargers Junior Girls Volleyball team this season, that word would be “overcome”.

The journey for this story began in June 2009 when a dear friend and teammate was taken as a result of a senseless act. This tragedy prompted the girls to dedicate the 09/10 volleyball season to the memory of their fallen team member Jazmine. Throughout the season her name could be heard echoing as a cheer after team huddles. Through the first half of the season the girls fought hard and were very competitive against the schools in the top division. After the Christmas break the girls once again came face to face with the grim reality that another team member had died and that they would have to once again play through all of the emotions that the loss of another friend brought. The teams assistant coach and good friend Juston Walker passed away suddenly in his sleep just days after the new year.

After a week to mourn the loss of Juston the girls once again hit the court to finish off the regular season and earn a playoff birth. Although the girls lost in the first round of the division 1 playoffs they were still the top finishing single ‘A’ school in the city. After a quick playoff challenge was won by the Chargers they advanced to NOSSA in Sturgeon Falls on February 26 and 27, 2010. The girls won their 4 round robin best of 3 games in 2 straight and in th process advanced to the finals against the home town Franco-Cite. Keeping their flawless record in tact they were able to win the final match in 2 straight games over the hosts. All of the hard work, dedication and sacrifice helped the team persist to victory. It has been said that “sports mirrors life in so many ways”, and there is no doubt that this team has overcome in sports and in life in a single volleyball season.
