Where did the name “Espanola” come from? In the middle of the eighteenth century, a band of Ojibways brought back with them from one of their southern journeys a young Spanish woman. Later, French explorers were amazed to hear some of the Native North Americans speaking Spanish and so named that village “Espagnole”.
