Charles C. McLean Public School is an English program public school serving approximately 185 JK to Grade 8 students living on Western Manitoulin. Our catchment area is large and some of our students are bussed from as far west as Meldrum Bay, 73 km away.In addition to regular classes, students benefit from Music, French and Computer instruction. Our student population is very stable. The majority of our Grade 8 graduates start their educational careers at C.C. McLean.
The staff at C.C. McLean devotes a great deal of time and effort to developing a well-rounded program for students. Intramural and intermural sports are an integral part of our extra-curricular activities. Teams include cross-country running, volleyball, soccer, basketball, baseball and track and field. Downhill skiing is introduced at the intermediate level to encourage active, healthy living beyond the scope of school. In addition, students participate in choirs, musical presentations, chess club, public speaking competitions and literary contests.
C.C. McLean students have many opportunities to develop their personal character as well as their commitment to the school community, their community at large and the global community. Demonstrations of character traits such as honesty, responsibility, respect and sportsmanship are recognized on a daily basis and acknowledged.
Activities such as Buddy Reading and Story Writing and Winter Fun Day encourage interaction between children of various age groups. Older students are positiv e role models, fostering a caring school community.
Projects such as the "Shoe Box Drive" to support our troops serving in Afghanistan and Jump Rope for Heart, foster a spirit of giving and a connection to the global community.
Parents and community members support school projects by volunteering and providing financial donations. We have nurtured business partnerships that enhance student learning. Manitoulin Transport sponsors our WINIT program by purchasing certificates and seals which recognize not only achievement in academic, athletic and artistic endeavours but also recognize effort, commitment, citizenship and participation.
The Royal Canadian Legion sponsors the Public Speaking contest for all age categories, awarding cash prizes and providing financial support for students who compete at regional and/or provincial levels. We are also proud to participate in the Remembrance Day Poem, Essay and Poster contest.
C.C. McLean P.S. benefits from the parental and community support extended to our students and our staff. Everyone has a vested interest in the success of our educational, athletic and artistic programs as they have a direct impact on our children's future.
