School Profile
Larchwood Public School is a Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8 English program school with about 125 students. It is a small, friendly community school located in Dowling.
At Larchwood, we endeavour to provide a safe and caring environment that promotes learning in an atmosphere in which students are encouraged to strive for excellence. As facilitators, we are committed to providing opportunities for our students to develop skills and attitudes required for a challenging and successful future. It is only through a cooperative effort among community, staff and students that our children become productive members of society.
The students at Larchwood Public School are actively involved in many teacher-run co-curricular activities throughout the year. Boys’ and girls’ basketball and volleyball, track and field, slo-pitch and cross country running are just some of the ways our students keep active, fit and involved. Our teams are competitive, with the Junior Girls’ Volleyball team capturing the city champions, and our Junior Boys’ Volleyball team finishing the season as the city runners-up. In addition, the Junior Slo-Pitch team was tournament champions and our Intermediate Slo-Pitch team won the silver medal. We are the Larchwood Lasers and strive to play fair and have fun.
Larchwood Public School also offers students other opportunities beyond the classroom. Public Speaking, Science Fair, Heritage Fair, Guitar Club, Choir, Kiwanis Festival, Math & Science Olympics and the Legion’s Public Speaking contest are some of the ways students get to demonstrate their talents and abilities.
Character development is an important part of the curriculum at Larchwood Public School. Each month we focus on a character trait. At our Kids With Character Assembly at the end of the month, a student from each class who best demonstrated that trait attends a special cupcake party with the Principal. As well, students receive ballots randomly throughout the month when they are caught doing something positive. These students have a chance of winning prizes during the assembly.
Larchwood Public School has a growing School Council and Fundraising committee.Together with the school, the parents work hard to fund-raise money for student activities and playground equipment. Many new ideas and initiatives are being shared and discussed at our regular meetings and we are always encouraging all parents to join in at any time. The School Council is an important advisory body. As partners in education, the School Council is committed to ensuring that Larchwood Public School promotes a strong positive image in the community.
We are very fortunate at Larchwood Public School to have a full computer lab.All classes have regularly scheduled times in the lab each week. In addition, we have SMART board technology that further promotes interactive and engaging learning for our students.
