EHRHARDT WINS HER SECOND OFSAA GOLD!

Well, on a hot (32C) steamy day in Hamilton, the unbelievable has been made believable again by Caroline. In another overwhelming display of athleticism Caroline completely crushed the rest of the best in Ontario in the Junior Girls Long Jump. She put out her first jump of 5.37m when the next best jumper jumped 5.19m after the first round. No girl jumped close. On her third jump Caroline jumped 5.52m. The OFSAA record is 5.48m. Once again the announcers let people know that caroline Ehrhardt of Espanola has lept past another OFSAA record but the wind was too strong so the record doesn't count. She put the nail in the coffin of her competitors with a jump of 5.58m but the wind was just over the legal limit, so once again the record was not allowed but the gold medal would not be put into question. The closest her competitors would get would be 5.28m for the OFSAA silver and 5.19 for bronze. Caroline outjumped the best in Ontario by 30 cms. An awesome performance. She was interviewed and photographed for the Hamilton Spectator.

The relay teams ran well and performed bravely, however, coming third out of NOSSA and competing against Ontario's best is quite a challenge. We were very proud of their performance.

EHRHARDT WINS OFSAA GOLD!

Hello all from Hamilton, I don't know how to put this into words that can really do it justice so I'm just going to say it. Caroline Ehrhardt is this year's Junior Girls's OFSAA Triple Jump gold medalist. And she didn't just do win - she cleaned house. Her first jump of 11.95 metres broke the OFSAA record set in 1991! Let me say it again - EHS is the home to an OFSAA record-setting- OFSAA gold medalist. It's awesome.

Every single one of her six jumps would have been a winning jump.

Her longest jump was 12.04 metres but the wind was measured at 2.1 m/s and anything over 2.0 m/s is said to be an aiding wind so the jump doesn't count for the record books but counts for the competition. Caroline won the competition by 75cms. It was unbelievable! Regularly over the loudspeakers you could hear the announcers saying "Caroline Ehrhardt of Espanola High School leads the Junior Girls Tripls Jump with a new OFSAA record-setting distance of....". Needless to say Mr. Fallat and I are unbelievably proud. I'm man enough to say that I shed a few tears of joy at the end of the event.

She truly has worked hard for months on end putting in countless hours of thankless work, and it has paid off in spades. She truly is a remarkable young lady.

Joe Burke was also on the track this afternoon in the Junior Boys 400m. Joe raced to a 53.00 second time which was just shy of making the final. He was a little disappointed with the overall time but he proved to be the 13th fastest Junior 400m runner in the province of Ontario - so he's fairly pleased with that.

At 11:00 a.m. tomorrow the Junior Girls and Junior Boys 4x100m teams are on the track and at 1 p.m. Caroline joinst the long jump competition. The competition will be very tough in this event but we know she'll bring her 'A' game. Saturday has Joe and Caroline in the 800m and Bob Meijer in the 300m hurdles and the Triple Jump.

If you're interested you can follow the results at www.ofsaa.on.ca/track.

RUGBY TEAM PLAYS THEIR HEARTS OUT

Yesterday the boys’ rugby team played their hearts out against a strong MSS squad. After a shaky first few minutes, the boys regrouped and played the game of their lives. Solid hits and quick feet helped the boys come within one try of tying up the game. But alas time ran out on the game with a score of 27-14 in MSS’s favour. With a few adjustments, coach Tilston and coach Vermeer believe next week’s game will be ours for the taking. Updated June 5th, 2008. [top]

TRACK AND FIELD VICTORIES

The Nipissing Invitational Track & Field meet ran on Saturday and Spartan athletes won gold in 5 of 6 events they were entered in. Competing against athletes from schools ranging from the Soo, Timmins and Barrie, Caroline Ehrhardt cruised to victory in the Junior girls’ long jump by jumping 5.35m, crushed the competition in the triple jump by 90cm with a jump of 11.6m. That jump moved Caroline to the top of provincial rankings. She also sent home crowd favourite, Dominique Chartrand from Algonquin Secondary, with silver by pushing past her in the 800 in a time of 2 minutes and 24 seconds. Joe Burke continued the gold rush in the Junior boys’ 400 and 800. Even stumbling off the start line couldn’t keep Burke from cruising to victory in the 400 in 55 seconds. He came from behind in the 800 to win in the lat 10m in 2 minutes 11 seconds. Kevin Emiry became the first Spartan qualifier for NOSSA by setting a new school record in the 2000m steeplechase in a time of 6 minutes, 52 seconds. Well done all! Updated May 12th[top]

IN SOCCER NEWS

In senior boys’ soccer action last night, Espanola played its 4th game of the season hosting Chelmsford. Certainly the fans got their moneys worth and more! Incredible shooting on both nets with 4 goals in the nets – prompts the riddle of the hour – how did we defeat Chelmsford 2-1 in our first home game? Answer: solid goals by mid-fielders Brandon Bourcier and “Woody” (Justin) Nicholson and a determined team who persevered to the end. A great victory and clean good soccer. Congratulations boys! Rumor has it though that the team is thinking of buying Aaron (alias Double Agent – Midfielder and striker) a GPS for his 19th birthday! Updated May 9th[top]

EHRHARDT, BURKE and GORDON LEAD THE PACK

Caroline Ehrhardt continued her winning ways on Friday at a track meet in Midland. On a cloudy, cool and windy day, she won the Junior Girls’ long jump by 40 cm with a jump of 5.18 m, and she won the 800m by 7 seconds in 2 minutes and 31 seconds. Joe Burke put a notch in the victory column by winning the Junior Boys’ 500m in a time of 54.5 seconds, a new personal best. In the 800m, Joe got spiked on the ankle 50 m off the start line. The cut was open to the bone and required some stitches to close. Jason Gordon continued setting new personal bests in both the 800m and 1500m. Well done squad! Updated May 5th, 2008 [top]

BOYS DOMINATE SOCCER

Please come to a brief meeting today at lunch hour in Room B9. Also, there will be no practice today. Updated May 1st, 2008 [top]

VBALL REVENGE IS SWEET

The Spartan Midget Girls Volleyball team traveled to Elliot Lake to participate in the NSSSA tournament. There were ten teams there divided into 2 pools. Our first game was against WC Eacket from Blind River. The girls started slow but won both sets. Next was CASS, again the girls won both sets. Our next victim was Elliot Lake which fell handily in 2 straight sets. Our last round robin game was against VFJ from Elliot Lake. We had to win just one set to make it to the finals. The girls played fantastic, displaying excellent bumping and setting skills. Emmalee Peters was on fire and dominated the net with many hard spikes. We won every set, even the exhibition matches to finish 11-0 after the round robin play.

This set up the finals against JN, who we lost to in the Junior NSSSA finals. The girls played terrific volleyball and easily defeated JN 25-21 and 25-12. Revenge is sweet. Updated May 1st, 2008 [top]

Please congratulate your Spartan Girls' Hockey team on yet another victory against the Lo-Ellen Knights. In a scoreless first period, the girls stayed cool and collected. With 5:33 left in the second, Alex Podlatis scored the first goal of the game which was answered by Lo-Ellen 23 seconds later. With 3:59 left in the second, the Knights hauled down Alex Podlatis on a break away resulting in a penalty shot. Alex made a beautiful deek sending the goalie down. Alex then buried the shot in an open net. Near the end of the period, the ladies fought off a two person deficit to keep the score static at 2-1. With 5:11 left in the third period, Kelly Trudeau and Haley Laframboise made sure Caitlin Pitawanakwat had the opportunity to snap a shot past the goalie into the top corner of the net to end the game 3-1 in favour of our Spartans. The win is credited to Cheyenne Abitong who was solid in net. With Lo-Ellen knocked out of contention, our Spartans advance to the finals against Marymount. The best of three final series promises to be exciting. The Spartans hit the ice in their first game in Sudbury on Wed, but return to home ice on Thursday. A huge congratulations girls!! You've showed real heart and determination that will serve you well against Marymount.

Fans, if you'd like to come on the bus and cheer on our girls, please sign up in the Main Office and pick up a permission form. The first ten to sign up come with us for a bargain price of $5. Go Spartans! Updated February 26th, 2008 [top]

NOSSA BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT

If you see any of the Midget Boys’ basketball players, pat them on the back or shake their hands because they are NOSSA champions. Out midget boys completed a perfect weekend Saturday by defeating Lockerby 46-37 in the final to take the AA/AAA NOSSA title. This is the first NOSSA championship for EHS basketball since 1996 – a tremendous accomplishment made even sweeter by the fact that EHS had to defeat two triple A schools to earn their gold medals.

EHS was led to victory by the scoring of Darcy Lelievre, Bob Meijer and Buzz Nicholson, but it was the tremendous team defence and hustle of all the players that preserved the victory. Congratulations to all boys! You should be very proud.

Congratulations also go out the Junior Boys’ basketball team who, despite falling short of their goal, showed the competitiveness and heart that made them North Shore champions. Good season boys! Updated February 25th, 2008 [top]
