most importantly quitting smoking saves lives!

STAND
UP AGAINST BULLYING DAY
Wear
Pink on Thursday, September 11th
Rainbow
District School Board is proud to mark its first ever “Stand Up
Against Bullying Day” this Thursday, September 11th, 2008.
WEAR
PINK. This small gesture will go a long way in showing our collective
commitment to safe schools.
“Stand
Up Against Bullying Day” began in Nova Scotia.
Secondary
school students Travis Price and David Shepherd arranged for dozens
of their classmates to wear pink shirts in support of another student
who had been bullied for wearing pink.
The
Province of Nova Scotia subsequently declared the second Thursday at
the start of every school year to be “Stand Up Against Bullying
Day”.
The
actions of these two young men, along with their fellow students who
wore pink to school in support of another student, reverberated across
Canada and here in Rainbow Schools.

CANADIAN RECORD BELONGS TO EHRHARDT!!
What
a day it was today. Espanola High School’s most successful day
at OFSAA Track and Field in history ! Caroline Ehrhardt of Espanola
High School has jumped farther than any other girl in Canadian high
school competition. Ever!!! Her fourth round jump of 12.76m beat the
Canadian Interscholastic Record set by Olympian Tabiah Charles by 40
cms. That also means that Caroline has qualified to compete at this
years World Youth Track and Field Championships in Italy during the
first weekend in July! Her first three jumps were a bit shaky. She faulted
on her first jump, had a second jump of 11.89 (good enough to get her
into the final round of three jumps) and a third round jump of 11.54m.
They whittled the field down from 24 of the best jumpers in Ontario
to 8 and Caroline was in second place as the leader had a jump of 12.08m
down. However, we knew that Caroline was ready to put on a performance
for the crowd and she had full crowd support. People started clapping
i
n rhythm as she stood on the runway ready to start her jump and when
she landed it she was well past the little Canadian flag and the OFSAA
sign that marked where the old records stood. The crowd went wild (there
were some tears of joy and pride shed as well. Truth be told.) Her fifth
round jump was even further.....alas the red flag went up signalling
a fault (much disputed by a biased crowd - me included, except I’m
not biased - it clearly wasn’t a fault). Anyways she jumped 12.56
on her final jump and eventually ended up on the top step of the podium.
Caroline’s is the ONLY Canadian Interscholastic Record set at
the meet so far. To set a record like that takes such skill, effort,
determination, poise and ....you get the idea, it’s hard to put
it into words the level at which she is operating. Needless to say,
it capped off a tremendous day.
I
certainly do not want to leave out the spectacular performance of Karen
Dubreuil. She entered the competition with a best long jump of 4.70m
in Junior Girls. And then on her first jump, jumped 4.90m putting her
in third place after the first round. And she continued to jump farther.
Karen qualified for the final round of three jumps in 5th place. Her
best jump was 4.93 m. However, on her last jump she pulled a 4.99m out
of her hat and that moved her up to fourth place in the province of
Ontario for Junior Girls Long Jump. An incredible achievement for someone
who just decided to come out at the last minute. Many congratulations
to Mr. Bertrand here and the work he has done with her to get her ready
for this event!
Sadly
the day didn’t go so well for Matt Brown who bowed out of the
Midget Boys high jump after clearing one height. He was well below his
personal best, but he gave it his best and he made it to Ontario’s
biggest stage, so we’re all proud of him for making it here.

BOYS'
SOCCER TEAM'S FIRST VICTORY
Last
night the Spartan boys’ soccer team enjoyed their first victory
in true Spartan fashion … the massacring of the North Stars from
Sudbury Secondary. The boys not only pulled three team points out of
the match, they managed to get to plus two in the plus/minus column.
Our goal scorers were Robert Diebel and Justin Massicotte with two goals
a piece, and captain Scott Anderson with one. Daniel Young and Tyler
Rydall shared the shut-out by stopping a total of one shot between the
two of them.
The
Spartan’s next game will be Monday here in Espanola. With last
night’s victory, the boys have moved into a three-way tie for
6th place, the final playoff spot. The boys are calling upon all Spartans
to come out to cheer and support them on Monday night at 5:30 p.m. Updated

BOYS'
SOCCER TEAM FALLS SHORT
The
Spartans’ soccer team played against the number 1 team in the
league last night – the MacDonald Carter Panthers. The boys fought
hard and defended well through 80 minutes, holding the league’s
number one goal scorer to just four shots. However, the experienced
offence was just a little too much for our young Spartans as they potted
two goals in the last 10 minutes. It should be noted that the defensive
and offensive plays of our midfields Josiah Faulkner, Tyler Rydall,
Brian Mailloux and captain Scott Anderson flustered and frustrated the
opposite team on several occasions.
It is now halfway through the season, and after having faced three of
the top five teams in the league, and having stolen a point from all
of them, we now turn to the latter half. In this second half, our boys
will face teams that are equal or below us in the standings. It must
be our top priority to win in the coming games in order to keep our
goal, making the playoffs.

THE
CAROLINE AND JOE SHOW
Caroline
Ehrhardt and Joe Burke brought their track talents down to the Cardinal
Carter Track Classic in Toronto last Thursday and Friday. In brutal
conditions on Thursday night, Caroline out-jumped and outlasted her
competitors, taking the gold by jumping 5.36 meters – just 1 centimeter
shy of the meet record. That same night Joe Burke ran a personal best
52.5 seconds in the 400 meters to finish 3rd overall.
On Friday Caroline was leading the triple jump competitors from the
start, until the second-last jumper jumped 12.21 meters to take the
lead. With one jump left, Caroline leaped to 12.39 meters for the gold
and a new meet record.
Caroline topped off her day by entering the Senior Girls’ 200
meter race, qualifying for the final and running a very fast 26.2 seconds
to finish in fourth place.
Joe Burke ended his day with the Senior Boys’ 800 meters and set
a new school record by running 2:01.4, finishing in fourth.
Good work folks!

SPARTANS
TAKE ON EAGLES
Last
Thursday, your fellow Spartans played in the Valley against a powerful
adversary, the Horizon Eagles. Having scored 6 goals in their prior
game the Eagles were hungry again to load up on their stats. The defensive
game of our Spartans, more specifically Mackenzie Muncaster, Justin
and Darren Nicholson, Josh Barrer and Daniel Young, held their offense
to just one goal, and even that one was a questionable call from the
official. Our offense, however, did meet their match. Out of the 5 shots
that were directed towards the net, their goalie stopped 3, making incredible
saves on all 3. The game ended in a 1-0 win for the Eagles. Despite
the rain, and the non-stop efforts to try to score, our boys just could
not put one away. The Spartans take to the battle field today against
the Panthers. If you do see a fellow soccer Spartan, give him good pat
on the back and wish him well for today’s battle.

GIRLS' VOLLEYBALL
Caroline
Ehrhardt, Joe Burke and Ed Paibomsai competed on Friday at the Hamilton
Indoor Games Track and Field Meet in Copps Coliseum. Caroline continued
where she left off last season in the long jump, easily winning the
event with a jump of 5.14 metres. She also ran a tremendous 300 metre
race too in a time of 44.6 seconds that dominated her heat and placed
her second overall. Joe Burke ran a very strong 300 in 41.3 seconds
to win his heat and place 13th, and improved in his 600 metre race with
a fast time of 1 minute 29 seconds to finish in 5th place. Ed Paibomsai
ran his first 1500 metre race of the year in a personal best time of
4 minutes and 54 seconds, and that race took a toll on Ed as he put
in a full effort but ran out of gas in his 600m race to finish a bit
behind the pack. Caroline and Joe continued on to York University to
compete in the Ontario Youth (age 17 and under) Indoor Track and Field
Championships. Against a stacked field of Ontario’s best, Caroline
dominated the Triple Jump, jumping 11 metres 70 to win the championship
by a full metre. She continued her winning ways in the long jump by
improving on her distance from the Hamilton meet to jump 5 metres 52
centimetres to win the event by 8 centimetres. Joe Burke continued his
speedy ways running a fast 54 seconds in the 400 metre event to finish
a tremendous 7th overall and improving on his 2:16 in the 800 two weeks
ago, Joe ran 2 minutes and 4 seconds to win his heat and finish in 6th
place overall. Congratulations to both!

TO YOUR HOME LITTLE BALL...
At
the NOSSA golf championship held in Blind River on Friday, Tyler Morin,
Alex Rogerson, Clancy MacNeil, Joel Berry and Brady Polden represented
the EHS boys’ team. They played well under cold weather conditions
and a frost delay, but will have to take this year’s experience
to prepare for next year. Joel Berry had a very good score of 81. Congratulations
boys for a successful season!
In the girls’ division, Casey MacNeil represented EHS as a single
entry and after easily capturing the NSSSA District Golf Individual
Girls’ overall championship only 2 weeks ago, won the individual
overall girls’ NOSSA championship on Friday with a score of 89.
She is now eligible to compete at the OFFSA girls’ championship
golf festival being held on October 15th and 16th in Oakville. Congratulations
