Students at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School Take Health to Heart
February is Heart Month and Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School is taking health to heart as students and staff pledge to raise funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Students will canvass their school neighbourhood on Wednesday, February 17, 2010 during the first Heart and Stroke Canvassing Blitz Night. They will go door-to-door from 5:30 pm to 8 pm in support of an important cause.
“Student Council members at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School have selected the Heart and Stroke Foundation as their charity,” says Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School Principal Craig Runciman. “We hope to make Heart Month an annual event at Lo-Ellen Park, where students work together to raise money for research.”
Students are spending the entire month canvassing in their neighbourhoods, with a special Blitz Night on February 17th. They will also sink baskets for pledges in the inaugural “Hoops for Heart” campaign on Wednesday, February 24th, 2010.
Students will spend the day shooting hoops in the gym. Events include a full-day 3-on-3 basketball tournament, 3-point shooting competition, and a dribbling competition. Approximately 8 to 10 teams, including an all-star teacher team, will participate in this event. The entire community is invited to pledge a player for Heart and Stroke.
“In Rainbow Schools, character education is an important part of everything that we do as we give students opportunities to develop leadership and citizenship skills,” says Principal Runciman. “Our students and staff care about the community in which they live and want to do their part to promote healthy living. Supporting the Heart and Stroke Foundation will not only raise funds for an important cause, it will also increase awareness.”
