Reading, Writing and Recreation: students enjoy Summer Literacy Camp
Thirty-five Grade 1 and 2 students from Rainbow Schools are enjoying a unique learning experience this summer. The students are participating in the Rainbow District School Board’s first Summer Literacy Camp that combines reading, writing and recreation.
“We were fortunate this year to receive Ministry of Education funding to offer this opportunity,” said Director of Education Jean Hanson. “The program combines intensive instruction in reading with recreational activities, creating an enjoyable learning experience for children.”
The City of Greater Sudbury Leisure Services Department and the Sudbury & District Health Unit have partnered with the Board to assist with the recreational component of the program.
The three-week camp began on July 5th and continues until July 23rd. It runs from 9 am to 2 pm at Queen Elizabeth Public School. Two certified teachers, two university students and two Summer Experience students are leading the sessions.
“Ongoing communication with parents is an important factor in the success of the program,” said Director Hanson. “Parents met with staff to discuss learning outcomes at the start of the Summer Literacy Camp. They are supporting what is being taught during the day by reading at home with their children in the evening.”
She added: “Parental involvement improves student achievement, so we certainly appreciate the commitment being made by parents. Students participating in the Summer Literacy Camp will go into Grades 2 and 3 with stronger reading and writing skills, the foundation for all learning.”
