Apprenticeship Program New Initiative:




Heavy Duty Equipment Technician
(HDET)

  • Aimed at Grade 12 students
  • Apprenticeship training for students interested in the HDET trade
  • Offered by Cambrian College in partnership with the four Regional school boards
  • Consists of the in-school component (Level 1 MTCU curriculum) and a work experience (coop placement under the OYAP option)

Career Description

A heavy duty equipment technician inspects, diagnoses, repairs and modified components and systems such as engines, engine management systems, transmissions, air conditioning, steering systems and braking systems as they related to equipment that is typically found in the fields of transportation, natural resources, construction and materials-handling industries.


The HDET placement has given me a great jump start on a career in the trades.

Admission Requirements:

Students who wish to participate must:
  • Have a social insurance number
  • Pass an initial interview with the coop teacher, followed by an interview with Cambrian College
  • Be enrolled in cooperative education to access the OYAP option
  • Be at least 16 years of age
  • Have acquired 16 credits or more towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma

Advantages:

While completing their OSSD, students who participate in the HDET apprenticeship program at Cambrian College will:
  • Complete Level One of the in-school component for the HDET trade at no cost
  • Earn one cooperative education credit and two TTJ3C or TTJ4C credits
  • Register as an apprentice at no cost (normally $40) and start acquiring practical experience in a skilled trade while working toward a secondary school diploma
  • Register with Cambrian College for the Level One In-school training at no cost (normally $400)

COOP + HOSPITALITY

Where:    Cambrian College

When:     8:00 to 11:00       
                Monday to Friday
                Semesters One & Two

Description:   Eight weeks at Cambrian College followed with an
Industry placement in a restaurant  or hotel establishment:   
  • Introduction to Hospitality
  • Kitchen Maintenance
  • Intro. to Kitchen Equipment
  • Demonstration Lab
  • Baking Practical
  • Food Production - Food Lab
  • Sanitation
  • Occupational Health/Safety
  • Smart Serve
  • Table Serving - Dining Room

Prior learning Assessment will be made available for students who wish to pursue a post secondary program at Cambrian College.

COOP + AUTOMOTIVE


Where:        Cambrian College

When:         12:30 to 3:30       
                    Monday to Friday
                    Semester Two

Description:   Eight weeks at Cambrian College followed with an industry placement.  Areas covered will include proper work procedures and locating, inspecting and identifying faults in:
  • Brakes, Steering and Suspension
  • Electrical
  • Engine Mechanical
  • Vehicle Performance
  • Drive Train

Emphasis will be placed on diagnosing mechanical and electrical faults pre-set in cars.  In addition students who complete this placement may qualify for transfer credits in the Automotive Service and Management Program (APP 1100, MOT 1130).
 

Eligibility Requirements:

Students must be:
  • At least 16 years of age
  • In  grade 11 or grade 12 with at least 16 credits
  • Serious about learning a trade
  • Enrolled in the coop program

Students must demonstrate:
  • Safe behavior
  • Good attendance
  • Positive attitude
  • Maturity

Benefits to Students:   

These placements will provide students with: curriculum  enhancements, a certificate of participation and a lead into OYAP

In addition, students may benefit from:
  • Greater awareness of college programs
  • Enhancement of employability skills
  • Articulated entry into a college program
  • Unique opportunity to gain exposure to  college programs followed with related work experience in industry

  • Meet with  a guidance counsellor
  • Register with the Co-op program
  • Complete an OYAP application
