The Rainbow District School Board provides computerized note takers to students with severe to profound hearing losses based on individual needs and availability of these specialized services.
Generally, note takers sit in the classroom near the student with hearing loss. In this way, the student can then read the computer screen as the note taker types. Some students choose to sit away from the note taker and get the notes after class. Please allow individual students to make that choice. Note takers do not type every word which is spoken in the class room. They summarize the information which is presented orally, much as a sign language interpreter does. In addition, note takers do not type what is written on the blackboard. Their role is to act as ears for the deaf/ hard of hearing student and type what is heard. Each speaker in the classroom is identified in the notes, therefore, it is necessary for the note taker to have a copy of the classroom seating plan. In addition, it helps if the teacher identifies a speaker by name at the beginning or end of an oral answer.
The notes are intended as a refresher for students. They will not be complete enough that the student does not need to take his/ her own notes. Nor will they be complete enough that the student does not need to read the text book or other material provided in class. The notes allow the student an opportunity to understand the things happening around them in class, especially when students participate in class discussions. Deaf and hard of hearing students must concentrate much harder than their hearing peers in order to watch the instructor and participate in the class. The note taker allows them an opportunity to relax somewhat knowing that if they miss something, it will likely be in the notes. Be aware that if a student speaks and cannot be heard, the note taker may ask for repetition.
The note taker is a contract employee with the Rainbow District School Board. Therefore, the note taker will show up to class and take notes when the student is absent. If the student begins to abuse this privilege, please contact Hillary Holmes at the Education Centre (523 3308 ext. 215). The note taker is not responsible for disciplining the deaf/ hard of hearing student. This is entirely the role of the classroom teacher. Note takers are expected to follow Board policy. At all times, they are to conduct themselves in a professional manner, reflecting their membership in the educational team. Questions regarding student performance or hearing loss should be directed to a teacher of the deaf. Note takers are expected to keep all student information confidential. At all times, they encourage the deaf/ hard of hearing student to become independent.
