Our history

Wanup Public School began in 1920 as a small white building on Old Wanup Road.  A raging forest fire in 1922 destroyed the structure and the Wanup Hall served as a classroom until a one-room schoolhouse was built on Highway 537 the following year.

As the enrolment increased, a new two-room structure was started in the early 1960s.  Two years later, another two rooms were added.  In the late ‘60s, a gymnasium and an open concept pod of seven classrooms were erected.  The school population reached an all time high of 365 in the early ‘70s with youngsters coming from Wahnapitae, Wanup, Estaire, Burwash, Alban, and the French River.

The present structure has seen the erection of walls within the pod area and the gymnasium doubling for Breakfast Club use in the mornings.

Our vision

As a World Class School, we strive to create a safe and caring learning community in which staff, students, parents, business leaders and community members work in partnerships founded in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cooperation.  Our goals focus on helping students reach their highest level of academic achievement, developing a strong sense of self-respect, personal responsibility and respect for others, becoming responsible citizens within the school, local and global communities, and providing opportunities for children and adults to be innovative, resourceful leaders.

High levels of commitment and bonding between the family, school, students and community result in the best possible education for our children!

Peaceful School Community

Our vision to create a Peaceful School Community lies at the heart of many school-wide programs and activities.  Character Education programs, including Terrific Kids, Gotchaa, and Pay It Forward, provide opportunities for students to realize their unique strengths and contributions, to develop strong, positive character traits and citizenship skills and to make a difference by serving others.

Academic Excellence

Providing a holistic, balanced curriculum is central to achieving academic excellence.  School-wide priorities focus on developing strong literacy and numeracy skills through balanced Reading and Math programs in all grades, providing Early Reading Intervention and Special Education Resource, providing hands-on learning opportunities in Science and Technology, and connecting the head and heart through strong vocal/instrumental music and physical education programs.  Parent support at home and home/school learning partnerships are essential building blocks in these programs!

Integrated use of computer technology develops life-long learning skills and prepares students for the workplace.  Regular access to computers provides opportunities for all students to make meaningful classroom applications and conduct research.
