School Profile
We offer full day, every day Junior Kindergarten!

2006 Marked the 50th anniversary of Webbwood Public School and during the year there were a number of activities to celebrate this milestone.

Webbwood Public School serves pupils from the town of Webbwood and surrounding area.  The boundaries for the school, which were reviewed in 2003, include the town itself and the area west of Tim Horton's on Highway 17 as far as Goltz Road.  A few families from Nairn Centre who had children at the school prior to the closure of the Nairn School opted to have their children complete their education at Webbwood.  Students come to Webbwood Public School from as far as 25 kilometers to the east and seven kilometers to the north.  There are also some families from the town of McKerrow who attend Webbwood Public school. (These families were attending Webbwood prior to the boundary review in 2003).

English is the first language for all families in the school although a few families have someone who can speak another language.  From 1994 to the present, the school's population has varied from about 155 children to 54 children.  For some 25 years, Webbwood Public School provided educational programs to the end of Grade 6 only. Beginning in 1994, with the transfer of intermediate students from Nairn to Webbwood, grade 7 was introduced and grade 8 was added the following year.

Webbwood Public School was built in the 1950's with several additions completed since that time. There is now a modern gym and library. Over the years, the school has been used by a number of community groups, including Scouts, Brownies, Cubs, and adult volleyball teams in the evening. Community recreation groups built the ball field at the school and use it after hours. Webbwood Public School has a fully equipped computer lab and all classrooms have a SMART Board. With a smaller school population, students benefit from smaller class sizes in all divisions.

Webbwood Public School has a very active intramural sports program run by the teachers. The badminton program at the school is second to none, with many graduates going on to win championships at the secondary level.

Character education is fundamental to the school, with student leadership being developed through the Community Builders program. In this intensive program, students are taught skills to create a socially inclusive school. There is an emphasis on keeping everyone in the community circle. Students learn peer mediation skills to interrupt inappropriate behaviour when someone is being hurt.

A “House Colour” program has been effectively running at the school. Everyone does positive acts of kindness without expecting anything in return. In addition, a tutoring program is in place to assist students with their reading skills. All of these programs are being used to ensure Webbwood is a very safe place to be, where everyone feels valued and where everyone feels they can take risks to enhance their learning.

The Webbwood School Council has operated for some years to support the learning environment at the school. The council raises funds through pizza days, hot dog days and other events. Through the efforts of the School Council, students enjoy a harvest dinner at Thanksgiving, craft days, veggie trays at Halloween, movie nights, a peace garden with a peace pole, and a celebration the final day of school. The school also has a breakfast program and a milk program. All of the students at Webbwood Public School benefit from a supportive School Council and Parent Group.
