Lively District Secondary School students host spring tea for the community

LDSS spring tea

Lively District Secondary School students will brighten the day for residents at the Chartwell Meadowbrook Retirement Community with a spring tea on Sunday, April 14, 2019 at 2 pm.

The event is being organized by the school’s Headstrong Committee, a group of students dedicated to reducing the stigma associated with mental health.

In an effort to build understanding and promote well-being, the group decided to reach out to the retirement community in Lively.

“The elderly population can sometimes experience a sense of isolation,” says Principal Leslie Mantle. “By bringing students and seniors together, we are creating connections and bridging the gap between youth and seniors.”

She adds: “Through this effort, being supported by our school’s Social Worker, students will develop communication skills, empathy and compassion. We will also demonstrate that we are a caring community.”

The spring tea is open to residents, students, families, and members of the community.

Guests will enjoy refreshments, baked goods, live music and a special door prize. Admission is $2.

“We invite everyone to join us for this intergenerational initiative that supports positive mental health for all,” says Principal Mantle.

Any funds raised beyond the cost of the event will support the Meadowbrook Resident Council, which generously provides two annual bursaries to local graduates.

The Chartwell Meadowbrook Retirement Community is located at 18 Jacobson Drive in Lively.
