Topic (Elementary/Secondary): Special Education and Student Achievement

Description: Educators will have the opportunity to learn from experts in the field of special education and instruction. The focus of the day will be on Universal Design for Learning (UDL). Universal Design for Learning is the instructional planning and delivery framework intended to increase meaningful access and reduce barriers to learning for all students, including those with diverse learning needs. Sessions for the day will include keynote speakers and subject specific workshops from K-12.

Topic 2 (Secondary): Transition Planning and Implementation

Description: School Administrators, Program Leaders and Student Success Teams will lead secondary educators in the review of Semester 1 credit accumulation and achievement data to inform school improvement planning. Staff will also build student profiles and engage in student success planning and pathway opportunities for semester 2.

Topic 1 (Elementary/Secondary): Curriculum Implementation / Next Steps in Literacy & Numeracy

Description: Teachers will refine their instructional practice by connecting curriculum expectations with high yield teaching strategies, success criteria and achievement of learning goals through the examination of student work. By building a common understanding of achievement categories as outlined in Ministry assessment policy documents, teachers will be able to align their assessment and evaluation practices with provincial assessments and standards.

Topic 1 (Elementary/Secondary): School Improvement Planning / Curriculum and Assessment / Special Education

Description: Teachers will incorporate the recently-released EQAO data and strand analysis into the School Improvement Plan. There will also be an initial check in on the success of strategies used to date and teachers will adjust strategies accordingly. In the second part of the day, teaching staff will review curriculum implementation through the explicit use of high-yield teaching strategies in lesson planning. Assessment practices will be aligned with the high-yield strategies, including differentiated assessments for learners with special education needs.

Topic 1 (Elementary/Secondary): Literacy/Mathematics/Student Achievement Plan and Data Analysis

Description: School teams will focus attention on their school’s Student Achievement Plan. School administrators will work with school-based staff to develop achievable goals that will increase students’ success in areas of math and literacy, as well as engagement, well-being and belonging. School staff will meet in-person to conduct data analysis of each school’s student achievement data (e.g., EQAO, initial fall assessments) to set goals for their School Improvement Plan and plan for high impact practice. Schools will also select the Key Performance Indicators from the provincial Math Action Plan to advance the Numeracy goals within the School Improvement Plan.

Topic 1 (Elementary/Secondary): Cell phones and Vaping / Bullying and School Safety / Mental Health

Description: In accordance with Policy/Program Memorandum 128 released in June 2024, staff will review the new requirements of the Provincial Code of Conduct which includes provisions related to Student Personal Mobile Device Use and Vaping. School staff will also review Student Safety Plans, Violence Prevention programs and learn how to best support the mental health and well-being of students through the use of The First 10 Days resource from School Mental Health Ontario (SMHO). This training is facilitated by school administrators.

Topic 2 (Elementary/Secondary): Occupational Health and Safety Training / PPM 161

Description: In this presentation prepared by our Health and Safety Officer, school staff will review prevalent medical conditions and renew their yearly mandatory Occupational Health and Safety training which includes Ministry regulations, policies and procedures designed to keep staff and students safe and healthy at school. This training is facilitated by school administrators.
