Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week 2022

A.B. Ellis Public School
Author Paul Toffanello will host a virtual workshop with students in Grades 5 to 8 from A.B. Ellis Public School on Thursday, May 5th. The session will inspire students to write about what they know. Parents, guardians and members of the community are invited to hear Paul Toffanello speak during a special presentation hosted by the A.B. Ellis School Council. Adamsdale Public School
At Adamsdale Public School, students will take part in a variety of activities for Education Week including a celebration of sound for Music Monday on May 2nd. A school-wide read aloud of an Elephant and Piggie Book will take place on Tuesday, May 3rd. Students will continue to read books from this series throughout the week. Families are invited to join their children for an outdoor read aloud and a special treat during a Family Literacy Picnic on Wednesday, May 4th. On Thursday, May 5th, students in all grades will enjoy math games with bubble gum. The week will culminate with a Track and Field Meet on Friday, May 6th.

Assiginack Public School
Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation at Assiginack Public School on Tuesday, May 3rd at 4:30 pm. In partnership with the Manitoulin Fish and Game Club, students in the Grade 4/5 class will visit Sheguiandah to help with the fish hatchery process on Wednesday, May 4th. Parents/guardians are invited to tune in to Parenting for Positive Mental Health on Thursday, May 5th at 7 pm as part of Children’s Mental Health Week in Rainbow Schools. Amanda Lamb, Director of the Centre for Family Initiatives at the Pine River Institute, will host the presentation. All caring adults are welcome to register at bit.ly/pineparentpresentation.

C.R. Judd Public School
Students from C.R. Judd Public School will kick off Education Week with a Music Monday assembly on May 2nd. A school-wide gallery will showcase student art using recycled materials. Students can bring in gently used books to trade during the Book Swap on Tuesday, May 3rd. Students in Grades 3 to 5 will visit Wahnapitae First Nation for a day of cultural teachings and a traditional meal on Wednesday, May 4th. Primary students will bring learning outdoors for math and literacy activities. Intermediate students will partner with the Capreol Lions Club for an Adopt-a-Road clean-up.

Central Manitoulin Public School
At Central Manitoulin Public School, students will begin Education Week with Music Monday activities in class. Students will pair with reading buddies for the outdoor Teddy Bear Picnic on Tuesday, May 3rd. The entire school will walk 20 minutes for Walking Wednesday on May 4th. That evening at 5:30 pm, children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are invited to Kindergarten Orientation. Students can purchase books from the Scholastic Book Fair. Families are invited after 4 pm. Students will write thank you cards to volunteers and community members for Thoughtful Thursday on May 5th. Students will enjoy Fun Fitness Friday on May 6th. Grade 4 students will take a trip to Sheguiandah at the Little Current Fish and Game Club to learn about the trap and net hatchery, walleye populations, spawning and different species. Students will also focus on “Kindness Blooms” for Children’s Mental Health Week.

Churchill Public School
Education Week at Churchill Public School will begin with Music Monday on May 2nd. During morning announcements, students will explore the many ways the arts bring learning to life. Students can purchase books during the Scholastic Book Fair from Monday, May 2nd to Wednesday, May 4th. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to attend Kindergarten Orientation on Tuesday, May 3rd at 6 pm. Students will enjoy a school-wide Scavenger Hunt on Wednesday, May 4th. The entire school will read a book with reading buddies for Pajama Day on Thursday, May 5th. The week will culminate with a primary Play Day on Friday, May 6th. Junior students will attend the Track and Field Meet at Laurentian University. Staff and students will also begin the “Coins for a Cure” campaign to raise funds for Maison McCulloch Hospice.

Cyril Varney Public School
On Monday, May 2nd, students will enjoy SPARK and Mindfulness Moments in the gym. Junior students will team up with primary classes to make breathing beads on Tuesday, May 3rd. Students will learn about the importance of using breathing as a calming strategy and will have time to practice. New Kindergarten students are encouraged to attend Churchill Public School on Tuesday, May 3rd at 6 pm for school readiness activities and a tour of the school. A whole school read aloud with a mindfulness focus will take place on Wednesday, May 4th. Classes will pair up to participate in co-operative learning games to support healthy relationships and enjoy physical activity Thursday, May 5th.

Lansdowne Public School
For Education Week, Lansdowne Public School students will enjoy a reading hour, math games hour, a Rube Goldberg stem challenge, an EcoSchools challenge, and Music Monday activities. The Sudbury Five will also visit and lead a discussion around perseverance, healthy eating and goal setting.

Larchwood Public School
Larchwood’s theme for Education Week this year is “Explore the World”. Students will take part in activities to learn about societies around the world. Activities will include learning games, culture, arts, food, and key features of the countries introduced. Broadening our awareness of other countries and cultures promotes understanding of other perspectives and experiences, and moves us toward the goal of being inclusive of all individuals.

Levack Public School
Levack Public School will host a school-wide assembly for Music Monday on May 2nd. The school Choir will sing “Imagine” for Ukraine, and the Dance Club will perform to a Conga rhythm. Two students will sing and drum the Eagle Song and will provide teachings about the Eagle Feather. Students in Grade 4/5 will demonstrate their basketball skills to the beat of “We Will Rock You”. The gym will display art from all classes inspired by Ukraine. On Wednesday, May 4th students from Kindergarten to Grade 7 will take part in math games, stories and a treasure hunt using coordinates. Activities will be led by Grade 8 ambassadors. Throughout the week, classes will take part in “Kindness Blooms” activities to promote positive mental health.

Little Current Public School
For Education Week, students from Little Current Public School will take part in various activities that focus on sharing knowledge and building relationships. Students will enjoy healthy eating workshops provided by Noojmowin Teg Health Centre. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to attend a Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 4th at 5 pm. Throughout the week, school community members will share stories with students. This year, the School Council received a Parents Reaching Out Grant to fund family mental health and well-being bags to support the strategies shared in classes. Bags will be distributed on Friday, May 6th.

MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will kick off Education Week on Tuesday, May 3rd with a school Track Meet at Laurentian University for students in Grades 3 to 8. A Culture Day was planned by students for Wednesday, May 4th. They are encouraged to wear traditional clothing and bring their country’s flag. Students will educate their peers by teaching them about clothing, food and the various celebrations that they take part in. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 4th at 5 pm.

Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will participate in a variety of events to celebrate Education Week. On Monday, May 2nd, students will drop everything at 11 am to pick up a book to read together. Tuesday, May 3rd will be Writing Buddy Day. Younger students will be paired with an older student to work on writing a short paragraph about how to make learning fun. All classes will play math goal games simultaneously on Wednesday, May 4th. On Thursday, May 5th, during the second nutrition break, students are invited to take part in a Reading Picnic. To finish off the week, students will enjoy a day of board games.

Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will celebrate Education Week with a variety of class and whole school activities. Lessons will focus on equity, diversity, inclusion and anti-racism. Students will engage in lessons that emphasize these themes, and will read, watch, write and learn about the importance of each and how to become an ally. Northeastern is committed to upholding and celebrating our student’s individuality by creating a culture of belonging to ensure students are supported to become successful at school and in life.

R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School will participate in Music Monday on May 2nd. Students will take part in classroom music activities, and will enjoy past school music performances. On Wednesday, May 4th, children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to a Kindergarten Orientation session at 5:30 pm. Families are asked to contact the school to confirm attendance. On Thursday, May 5th, students and staff will spend the day at Science North. The week will conclude on Friday, May 6th with a day of math games.

R.L. Beattie Public School
During Education Week, R.L. Beattie Public School will celebrate Music Monday with live performances throughout the day. Students will recognize the importance of rich literature and enjoy books together through shared buddy reading across all grades. On Friday, May 6th, students will take part in a spirit day and are encouraged to dress as their favourite character from a book. Students and families can bulk up their home libraries by purchasing books through the virtual Scholastic Book Fair. Students have been busy practising chess and learning new moves to prepare for the first annual chess tournament.

Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will host a virtual Scholastic Book Fair starting Monday, May 2nd. To promote a love of reading, Principal Mark Patterson and Vice-Principal Katrina Nadeau will read to classes daily from Laura Numeroff’s “If You Give” series. At the end of the week, students will participate in a writing activity inspired from the readings. A new math challenge will be posted and school-wide participation is encouraged. On Thursday, May 5th, children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to the Redhawks Kindergarten Orientation at 5:30 pm.

Westmount Avenue Public School
Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation at Westmount Avenue Public School on Wednesday, May 4th at 4 pm. Students will explore their new classroom, meet the educator team and engage in learning activities. Please call the school to register if you have not already enrolled your child for September 2022. Throughout April, classes have been engaged in dialogue about ways to help the planet. Westmount will host “Give a Book. Take a Book”. Students are invited to bring in gently used books to swap with others. May 2nd to 6th is also Children’s Mental Health Week, and kindness is always in bloom at Westmount. Students and staff will continue to engage in theme-based activities around the power of kindness and empathy.
