Rainbow Schools observe Remembrance Day

Adamsdale Public School
The Adamsdale Public School ceremony will begin at 11:00 am on Wednesday, November 11, 2009. Students will share Remembrance Day songs, poems and a slide presentation. Wreaths will be laid in honour of our war heroes.

Alexander Public School
Alexander Public School has a strong tradition of remembering the contributions and sacrifices of veterans who served during war, military conflict and times of peace. Students from JK to Grade 1 will participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony on Wednesday, November 11 at 10:30 am. Students will express their respect through singing of the anthem, a moment of silence and viewing a presentation to honour former Alexander student Donald Cameron Plaunt, a Lancaster Bomber pilot who lost his life during World War II.

This year, students from Grade 2 to 8 will attend the Remembrance Day ceremony at the Sudbury Arena.

A.B. Ellis Public School
Local Legion veterans opened and closed the ceremony at A.B. Ellis Public School held on Friday, November 6 at 12.15 p.m. Following the singing of O Canada, the names of fallen soldiers from Espanola were read. Students also paid tribute to war heroes.  The school band assisted with the ceremony.  On November 11, students will have a minute of silence to honour our soldiers.

Algonquin Public School
On Wednesday, November 11, at 10:45 am all students and staff at Algonquin will assemble in the gymnasium for their traditional Remembrance Day ceremony.  Each class will express their respect through poetry, song and a slide show presentation. 

Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School will hold its Remembrance Day Service at 10:30 am on November 11, in the school’s gymnasium.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School/Ernie Checkeris Public School
On Wednesday, November 11, students from Ernie Checkeris Public School are invited to gather in the gymnasium at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School at 10:35 am.  The ceremony will commemorate the veterans and civilians from World War I and II and pay tribute to Canadian soldiers who are fighting today.

The ceremony will begin with the students singing the National Anthem.  The children will recite In Flanders Field and the Grade 8 students will share some videos set to music about the effects of war.  On the eleventh hour at the 11th minute, everyone will observe two minutes of silence. Parents and guardians are welcome to attend.

Central Manitoulin Public School
Parents/guardians and community members are invited to attend the Remembrance Day service on Wednesday, November 11, beginning at 9:15 am in the school gym.  Following the Honour Guard and singing of O’Canada, students from various grades will honour war heroes through songs, readings and poems.

Chelmsford Public School
The Remembrance Day ceremony at Chelmsford Public School will take place in the gym on Wednesday, November 11, at 11 am. The school community is invited to join students and staff for the Remembrance Day ceremony.  Students will sing the Canadian National Anthem, recite poetry they have prepared, lay wreaths and observe a moment of silence.  The Chelmsford Public School choir will perform as part of the ceremony.

Churchill Public School
On Wednesday, November 11th at 10:45 am, Churchill Public School will honor former graduate Lieutenant Chris Hartwick, who is presently serving his first tour of duty in Afghanistan. Lieutenant Hartwick’s platoon’s mission includes ensuring schools are being built for Afghani children. Lieutenant Hartwick has written a letter to be read at the ceremony and his mother and grandmother will be in attendance. The ceremony will also feature the Grade 8 Concert Band, Junior Choir, as well as letters written by students to Lieutenant Hartwick and his platoon.

Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Legion Branch 224 will hold a Remembrance Day service in conjunction with Copper Cliff Public School on November 11, beginning at 10:45 am. The Copper Cliff Public School choir will sing Children Together and students will recite In Flanders Fields. All members of the Copper Cliff community have representation at the Laying of the Wreaths, including the Legion, Branch 224, the Copper Cliff Community Action Network and the Copper Cliff Volunteer Firefighters.

Little Current Public School
The ceremony at Little Current Public School will be held on Wednesday, November 11, at 10 am. Veterans, Legionnaires and Sea Cadets will present the flag and their colours. It will culminate with the reading of In Flanders Field and the laying of a wreath.  The Little Current Sparks and Brownies will lead the congregation in the singing of O’Canada and God Save the Queen.

Long Lake Public School
On Wednesday, November 11, students from Long Lake Public School will attend the Remembrance Day Service at the Sudbury Arena.  Students will also participate in class discussions about building a peaceful society and recognizing the sacrifices that have been made on our behalf. 

MacLeod Public School
The MacLeod Public School ceremony will begin at 10:45 am on Wednesday, November 11, beginning with the MacLeod band playing the National Anthem.  Each class will then present a poem or song that emphasizes the importance of Remembrance Day. Representatives from each division in the school as well as staff and community representatives will lay a wreath in honor of our war heroes.  The entire school will sing “Where Have all the Flowers Gone.” The ceremony will end with the MacLeod band playing Song for Friends as students and guests silently exit the gymnasium.

Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will host a Remembrance Day Observance on Tuesday, November 10 at 1:30 pm in the school gym. Markstay students will join members of the Municipality of Markstay-Warren, local veterans, community leaders and other members of the public to honour those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom. Students will express their respect through poetry and the laying of wreaths. The Markstay Public School Choir will also perform. A moment of silence will be observed on November 11 at 11:15 am.

Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School has gratefully accepted the French River Legion’s invitation to Remembrance Day ceremonies and activities in Noelville on Wednesday, November 11, beginning at 10:30 a.m. The ceremony will include area children as they continue to build their understanding of the importance of honouring those who served in the wars. Monetville students have also entered the Legion’s poster, prose and poetry contest. Upon the completion of the ceremony, Monetville staff and students are attending a luncheon at the Knights of Columbus Hall.

Queen Elizabeth Public School
On Wednesday, November 11, at 10:15 am, all students at Queen Elizabeth II Public School will assemble in the gymnasium for their traditional Remembrance Day ceremony.  Students from all grades will participate in the ceremony, which will include  "What We Remember on Remembrance Day", poetry readings created by students, the laying of the wreaths from each class and the traditional minute of silence while the Last Post is played. 

R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School staff and students will travel to the Sudbury Arena on Wednesday, November 11, to participate in the Remembrance Day Service from 10:30 am to 12 pm.

R.L. Beattie Public School
The school ceremony will begin at 10:45 am on Wednesday, November 11. The ceremony will have a musical performance by the students, which includes singing, playing the piano and violin.  It will also include a creative movement piece, which will be performed to the song “Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and the reading of poems.

Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres will hold a Remembrance Day Service on Wednesday, November 11, at 9 am. Students will express their respect through the laying of wreaths, slide presentations, poetry and music. 

Valley View Public School
A Remembrance Day ceremony will take place at Valley View Public School on Tuesday, November 10, at 11:15 am.  Members of the Royal Canadian Legion, Chelmsford branch, will help lead this assembly.  Grade 5 students will do a reading of In Flanders Fields and the Valley View choir will perform two songs. The school’s newly founded sign language club will sign to the song "Imagine" by John Lennon. 

Webbwood Public School
There will be an assembly in the gym at Webbwood Public School at 1:30 pm on Tuesday, November 10.  Legion members from Massey will be in attendance.  Students will watch the music video " A Pittance of Time" and observe a moment of silence at 11 am on Wednesday, November 11.

Westmount Public School
The Remembrance Day Ceremony at Westmount Public School will take place from 10:45 am to 11:15 am.  Students will sing the National Anthem, view a slide show, and recite "In Flanders Field”. They will also lay wreaths and give a minute of silence.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Students from Grades 7 through to 12 will gather at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 11th in the gymnasium.  Students will share readings and stories of fallen soldiers.  Wreaths will be layed followed by a moment of silence.  Students will then view two videos of remembrance.

Confederation Secondary School
Confederation Secondary School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 10th at 1 pm.  The Chelmsford Legion will assist in the laying of wreaths.  A video presentation will also take place.

Espanola High School
On Friday, November 6th at 1:30 pm, Espanola High School hosted their annual Remembrance Day Ceremony in their gym.  The Espanola Legion assisted with the laying of the wreaths.  Students read the list of fallen soldiers from the Espanola, Massey, Sagamok, Webbwood, McKerrow, Whitefish Falls and Birch Island areas.  The school’s concert band also performed.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
On Tuesday, November 10th, students and staff at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School will hold their annual Remembrance Day assembly from 9 am to 10 am with Grade 8 students from R.L. Beattie Public School.  The assembly will include remarks from Michael Thomson representing The Royal Canadian Legion. Adhering to a traditional format, there will be a Cenotaph Guard, a Piper and Colour Party provided by the 200 Wolf Squadron. Lo-Ellen expects to have 10 to 20 cadets in uniform involved in the program. This year, members of the Royal Canadian Legion will also attend.
