Photo: Traffic survey fuels math lesson at Walden Public School

Cathy Bryan’s Grade 3 class and Heather Rowell’s Grade 2/3 class at Walden Public School recently completed a traffic survey on Main Street in Lively. It was all part of a hands-on lesson in math. Students brainstormed possible vehicles they might see and then organized them into categories. They took their spreadsheets to the street in their quest to discover what type of vehicles they might sell if they opened a local dealership. When they returned to their classrooms, they began the task of tallying their results. "Students graphed their findings and interpreted their graphs," said Principal Lesley Fisher.  "The traffic survey supported their learning of data management, a strand of the math curriculum, in a fun and unique way."
