Rainbow District School Board welcomes Student Trustee for 2013-2014

Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board, invites Student Trustee Roberto Bagnato to take a seat at the Board table. A Grade 12 student at Lockerby Composite School, Roberto Bagnato was sworn in as Student Trustee for the 2013-2014 school year at the Board meeting on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.
Roberto Bagnato, a Grade 12 student at Lockerby Composite School, will serve as Student Trustee on the Rainbow District School Board for the 2013-2014 School Year. He was sworn in at the Board meeting on Tuesday, August 27, 2013.
“Rainbow District School Board values the student voice,” said Chair Doreen Dewar in welcoming Roberto Bagnato to his new role. “He will bring this important perspective to the table as a Student Trustee.” 
She added: “He will also have an opportunity to gain a first-hand look at the role of elected officials in a democratic society as well as develop leadership skills that will last a lifetime.”
Roberto Bagnato looks forward to connecting with the students of Rainbow District School Board. “Students are the future and we all have a voice,” he said. “I am proud to be representing so many unique individuals and to continue initiatives which support these amazing voices.” 
One of these initiatives is the annual Stand Up Speak Out Conference presented by the Student Senate in the spring. “All high schools in the Rainbow District School Board are invited to participate in this leadership experience,” said Roberto Bagnato. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to inspire young people to make a difference in their schools and their school communities.”
Roberto Bagnato has been on the Student Council at Lockerby Composite School for the past three years, most recently as Treasurer. He will serve as Co-President in the coming school year. 
He will also co-chair the Laura Cotesta Cancer Drive, which raised more than $56,000 for pediatric cancer research last year and will continue to be a member of the Greater Sudbury Police Chief’s Youth Advisory Council, which works closely with the police service to help other youth in the community. 
An all-round student, Roberto Bagnato enjoys extra-curricular activities. “It has helped me have such an amazing high school experience and has allowed me to meet many great people,” he said. In the last school year, he was a member of the Lockerby Vikings senior boys’ soccer team as well as the badminton and softball teams. 
In the future, Roberto Bagnato plans to study political science or Canadian law.
