Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week 2024

Rainbow Schools will mark Education Week from May 6 to 10, 2024. “Education Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Director of Education Bruce Bourget. “This year’s theme focuses on reading, writing and math – the foundation for learning in all subject areas.”

A.B. Ellis Public School
On Music Monday, May 6th, A.B. Ellis Public School will partner with Espanola High School to showcase student musical talent in the Espanola High School gym at 11:30 am. Donations in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust are welcome and appreciated. Students starting school this fall are invited to Kindergarten Orientation at the school on Tuesday, May 7th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 10th, families are invited to visit their child’s classrooms for literacy, numeracy and STEM learning activities. Kindergarten students will explore literacy outdoors with natural materials. Grade 1 students will showcase their learning with a “Read and Roll” activity using decodable texts. Students in Grade 1/2 will play literacy and numeracy games. Students in Grades 2/3 will engage in a fun math lesson. Grade 3 students will demonstrate their coding skills with robots “Dot” and “Dash”. Students in Grade 4 will teach their family members at literacy centres. Grade 4/5 students will present their stop motion products. Students in Grades 5/6 will share their Book Club games and presentations. Grade 6/7 students will challenge parents/guardians to a fact fluency card game tournament. Students in Grade 7/8 will showcase presentations featuring WeVideo, Think Skills Project, Tinkercad and 3D printing. Grade 8 students will exhibit their historical inquiry projects. Before leaving, families will be invited to select from books donated to the school Book Share to encourage reading at home.

Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School is thrilled to host an “Amazing Race Math Night” on Thursday, May 2nd. Families are welcome to a light dinner before they embark on a mathematical excursion across the globe to engage in various math games and problem-solving challenges. Students will mark Music Monday on May 6th with the annual Talent Show – which provides a platform for students to showcase their unique abilities in a celebration of diversity. On Tuesday, May 7th, families of students starting school this fall are invited to Kindergarten Orientation from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 10th, the school will host a family Booknic to help foster a love of literacy. Families will enjoy some time reading their favourite stories together while sharing snacks.

Algonquin Road Public School
Education Week at Algonquin Road Public School will include a celebration of literacy, math and all things learning. Many classes will extend invitations to parents/guardians to visit the school and share in the celebration. The week will kick off with Music Monday on May 6th led by teacher Danika Hewlett. Students will also engage in various classroom and division-based activities including literacy games, a family reading hour, “Read to Your Stuffed Animals”, “Math with Moms,” STEM with intermediate students and teacher Ryan Crouch, Mother’s Day art led by teacher Matthew Davie, “Taco’n about Kindness” and much more.

Assiginack Public School
The Assiginack Public School LEGO® Robotics team will take part in the Skills Ontario Provincial Championships in Toronto on Monday, May 6th. Children starting school this fall and their parents/guardians are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation at the school on Tuesday, May 7th from 5 pm to 6 pm. On Wednesday, May 8th, junior and intermediate students will participate in the Island soccer tournament, and the Eco Team will travel to Sudbury for the board’s EcoSummit. The school will also host an arts event from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Staff and students will mark Mental Health Week with daily announcements about compassion for oneself and others.

C.R. Judd Public School
For Education Week, C.R. Judd Public School will shine the spotlight on literacy and numeracy through STEM-based activities including a city challenge looking at area and perimeter. Kindergarten students will invite families to share a book and a snack. Families of children starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Intermediate students will construct garden boxes for the school’s courtyard. To end the week, intermediate students will join together with members of the Capreol Lions Club for a community clean up. Staff will also host education theme days for all.

Charles C. McLean Public School
Education Week at Charles C. McLean Public School will kick off with “Family Fun Night: Unplug with Board Games” on Monday, May 6th. Student volunteers in Grades 7 and 8, in partnership with the School Council, will lead board games in the gym for families. Guest names will be entered into a draw to win a board game to take home. On Wednesday, May 8th, students starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation with their parents/guardians from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Friday, May 10th, the School Council and the Grade 7/8 class will host a Spring Fling Family Dance for all ages. Throughout the week, primary students will participate in the “Exquisite Eight Book Challenge”. Two books will be read aloud daily. Students will vote for their favourite book each day and the book with the most votes will be announced on Wednesday, May 15th.

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
On Monday, May 6th, Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will kick off Education Week with a week-long Book Fair. On Wednesday, May 8th, students will host a Joan Mantle Music Trust Talent Show in the school gym at noon. Admission is by donation. All proceeds will support music education in Rainbow Schools. Throughout the week, elementary and secondary students will join together for a variety of learning activities. On Friday, May 10th, students from Grades 3 to 8 will attend a track and field meet at Laurentian University.

Central Manitoulin Public School
Throughout Education Week, Central Manitoulin Public School students will enjoy literacy, numeracy and Indigenous-based learning activities. The week will begin with Kindergarten Orientation on Monday, May 6th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm for children starting school this fall to meet staff, make new friends and take part in engaging activities. That same evening, all Central Manitoulin families are welcome to a Book Fair from 5 pm to 7 pm, along with a school-wide Writing and Art Gallery. On Wednesday, May 8th, students will attend an Indigenous Book Tasting in the library where they will explore literature focused on Indigenous culture. Debajehmujig Storytellers will visit the school to share the Three Sisters story of the Mighty Odawa Boy. Throughout the week, students will also take part in Math Mania, a Whimsical Writing Workshop and a Pattern Parade.

Jean Hanson Public School
Jean Hanson Public School students will participate in creative activities focused on literacy and numeracy. Some classes will learn about the life cycle of a Monarch butterfly as well as migration, and will have the opportunity to watch it unfold over the coming weeks. Students will plant milkweed flowers that have been germinating. Throughout the week, many classes will explore Indigenous culture. Friday, May 10th is Spirit Bear Day or Bear Witness Day. Celebrated annually, this day honours Jordan River Anderson and invites people of all ages to “bear witness” to ensure Jordan’s Principle is fully implemented. Students will read spirit bear books and take part in a teddy bear picnic outdoors at 12 pm. In the event of inclement weather, the activity will take place in the school gym. Students are encouraged to bring in a stuffed toy. Older students will work with younger students as they learn how to braid sweetgrass.

Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School parents/guardians are welcome to various events to mark Education Week. On Music Monday, May 6th, students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will take the stage to share their musical talents during a spring concert at 11:45 am. Families are encouraged to attend and support their children’s hard work and passion for the arts. On Wednesday, May 8th, at 9:45 am, Grade 8 parents are invited to attend a Thinking Classroom math lesson to experience the innovative approaches used to foster understanding and problem-solving in math. That same day, families are invited to join primary classes at 2 pm for Literacy Hour. Students will demonstrate their reading and writing skills through interactive lessons and activities – the perfect opportunity to showcase literacy learning in action. Future Kindergarten students and their families are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Thursday, May 9th at 5:30 pm. Children can explore the classroom, meet the teacher, and learn about the exciting learning journey ahead.

Larchwood Public School
Larchwood Public School will kick off Education Week with a Music Monday Spring Concert on May 6th. All proceeds will support the Joan Mantle Music Trust. On Tuesday, May 7th, the entire school will join together in divisions for a kindness writing activity. Students will each write one page for a school-wide book called “What Kindness Means to Me at Larchwood Public School”. On Wednesday, May 8th, students starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Thursday, May 9th, the school will come alive with numerical excitement as students, teachers and staff join forces for an afternoon of fun math games and activities. The week will culminate with an appreciation breakfast celebration for school volunteers in the gym.

Lasalle Elementary School
Lasalle Elementary School will mark Education Week with learning opportunities for students including a Music Monday celebration in the school gym on Monday, May 6th. With a focus on literacy and numeracy, students will participate in dramatic play activities with script writing and puppet performances. Students will practise their literacy skills with gratitude journals. Numeracy will be highlighted as students move through various math game stations in divisions. A school-wide dance will take place on Friday, May 10th to wrap-up Education Week.

Lasalle Secondary School
Grade 11 students from Lasalle Secondary School will take part in a cross-curricular study with guest artist Kelly Wolf. Students will create weavings that represent stories with colour, textures and lines. Students will practise using the writing/design process by brainstorming an original story plot with characters, setting and conflict before creating a weave to represent their ideas. Students will make connections to the elements of their stories by selecting colours, textures and lines they feel connect best with their story’s purpose through symbolism. This provides cross-curricular learning, aligned with the Understanding Contemporary Indigenous Voices course values, which shows students that stories and learning can take many different forms. Grade 6 parents/guardians are invited to an Open House at the school on Wednesday, May 8th at 6 pm.

Little Current Public School
Children starting school this fall and their families are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Thursday, May 9th from 6 pm to 7 pm, students are welcome to participate in a series of engaging learning activities at the school. The School Council will host a Math Games Night in the gym thanks to a Parents Reaching Out Grant. The evening will also feature the Grade 6/7 Future Cities engineering project. The Creative Writing Club will share their work, and an art show featuring works from a number of classes and grade levels will also take place.

Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School celebrated the unveiling of its new Horticulture Room on Wednesday, May 1st. A joint music concert will take place on Thursday, May 2nd with talent from Lively District Secondary School and Walden Public School. Two performances will take place – 10 am and 7 pm. Donations will be graciously accepted in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust. Eight intermediate and eight secondary students will compete at the Skills Ontario Provincial Championships from May 5th to 7th in Toronto. Law students will visit the Sudbury Courthouse on Tuesday, May 7th for a tour. To illustrate the various roles and procedures of the criminal justice system, students will witness court in session, and directly engage with judicial representatives. The Food and Nutrition class will visit Meadowbrook for high tea prepared by students and Book Talk. On Wednesday, May 8th, 10 students will represent the school at the board-wide EcoSummit at Laurentian University. Ten students will also participate in the board-wide Stand Up, Speak Out Conference on Thursday, May 9th. On Friday, May 10th the school’s rock bands will travel to Confederation Secondary School for a musical recording session.

Lockerby Composite School
On Music Monday, May 6th, Lockerby Composite School will host an annual concert alongside MacLeod Public School in the McKellar Auditorium at 7 pm. Both school bands will perform. Proceeds from the event will support the Joan Mantle Music Trust. The Lockerby Student Council will host various events throughout the week, and will also attend the board’s Stand Up Speak Out Conference on Thursday, May 9th.

Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will showcase student talent on Music Monday, May 6th with a daytime spring concert. Families are welcome to attend. Students are welcome to wear yellow for Wishbone Day in support of Osteogenesis Imperfecta also known as Brittle Bone Disease. Students can learn a new card game each day of the week during recess with Principal Kate MacKenzie. On Friday, May 10th, students will take part in an hour-long Reading Buddies session. For the event, older students partner with younger students to read various genres of books together for the love of reading. Students are also invited to wear blue and yellow to showcase their school spirit.

Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School will mark Education Week with literacy and numeracy events and activities beginning on Monday, May 6th with a Math Madness Game Day. On Tuesday, May 7th, students will explore various genres of books during their first café-style Book Tasting. Students starting school this fall are invited to Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. On Thursday, May 9th, students will decorate the sidewalk with words and pictures of hope, kindness and encouragement for Chalk your Walk Day. Classes will also enjoy read alouds with Principal Shannon Lafrance during a pancake and PJ breakfast.

Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will kick off Education Week with the unveiling of a colourful mural in the school entrance on Monday, May 6th at 10 am. Education Week will continue with various activities and presentations for students throughout the week including primary and junior Zumba. On Wednesday, May 8th, the school will host an Awareness Day designed to promote inclusion and acceptance. Local agency representatives and guest speakers will visit the school to speak with staff and students about various disabilities and disorders, mental health strategies as well as cyber safety.

Princess Anne Public School
On Monday, May 6th, the entire Princess Anne Public School community will enjoy performances by the Concert Band, Recorder Ensemble and Choir to mark Music Monday. On Tuesday, May 7th from 5 pm to 7 pm, the School Council will host a parent/guardian Wellness Art Evening with artist Raven Debassige. Parents/guardians must be registered to attend. Staff will host Kindergarten Orientation for children starting school this fall on Wednesday, May 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Select students will showcase their vocal abilities during the Princess Idol Competition on Thursday, May 9th from 6 pm to 8 pm. The top five acts will perform for the entire school on Friday, May 10th at 9 am. Classes will also take part in reading with a buddy on Friday, May 10th.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Staff from Queen Elizabeth II Public School will host special events throughout Education Week to support the ongoing instruction in literacy and numeracy. On Tuesday, May 7th, community groups will visit the school to speak with primary students about various ways of learning and to promote awareness on topics including autism, hard of hearing, learning disabilities and low vision. To promote a love of reading, all students will select a free book to take home on Wednesday, May 8th. On Thursday, May 9th, an Art Show will take place for families. Also, students starting school this fall are invited to Kindergarten Orientation from 4 pm to 5 pm.

R.H. Murray Public School
Education Week at R.H. Murray Public School will begin with math and board games on Monday, May 6th. On Tuesday, May 7th, parents/guardians are welcome to a reading picnic at 2 pm. Students will learn how to use Ozobots on Wednesday, May 8th and are welcome to return to school from 5:30 pm to 7 pm for a Family Math Night. Students will enjoy reading with their buddies on Thursday, May 9th. The week will culminate on Friday, May 10th with classroom construction building competitions.

R.L. Beattie Public School
R.L. Beattie Public School will kick off Education Week with a concert celebrating music around the world. The school Choir will perform the Music Monday song “We Are One”. A school assembly will reinforce the important lessons learned through the Dare to Care program. Students will act out anti-bullying messages to remind everyone of the importance of speaking up when they see or hear something wrong. School-wide challenges will take place throughout the week to ignite an excitement for math.

Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will host Kindergarten Orientation on Wednesday, May 8th from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. To promote a love of reading, Principal Mark Patterson and Vice-Principal Katrina Nadeau will present a read-aloud to all classes. The story will highlight kindness and will also support the work being done through the Dare to Care program. Throughout the week, junior classes will partner with primary students for numeracy games.

S. Geiger Public School
To promote a love of reading during Education Week, Principal Shelley Tamura will share her favourite books with classes. On Tuesday, May 7th, students will teach and play math games with their families during “Math Mania”. On Wednesday, May 8th, families of students starting school this fall are welcome to Kindergarten Orientation from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. That same night, the school will host a “Paint Night” fundraiser led by a student artist from 5:30 pm to 7 pm. Track and field events will take place on Thursday, May 9th. Kindergarten students will attend a celebration at the Biidaaban Kinoomaagegamik School’s Educational Pow Wow on Friday, May 10th.
