Students in Rainbow Schools encouraged to volunteer this summer

Grade 8 students in Rainbow Schools are being encouraged to get a head start on their 40 hours of community service required to graduate from secondary school.

Students graduating from Grade 8 are also encouraged to begin earning a minimum of 10 hours of community service prior to beginning Grade 9. Interested students can earn all 40 if they wish.

“Community engagement helps students develop a greater sense of awareness and understanding of civic responsibility,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board.

He adds: “Volunteering gives students a first-hand glimpse at how their contributions support and strengthen the communities in which they live and learn.”

Students also explore career options, prepare to enter the workforce, gain valuable work experience, network, build self-esteem and confidence, discover strengths, and develop skills.
