Students from Sudbury Secondary School are contributing to a white paper on climate change. The white paper will be presented to global leaders at the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Lima, Peru in December 2014.
“Our students were chosen for this amazing opportunity after a series of webinar interviews,” says Sudbury Secondary School Principal Bob Deeth. “The leaders of this program were looking for schools to represent a cross-section of our country, including students who have knowledge of the environmental impact of humans on our planet. We are one of six schools selected to work on the white paper from across Canada.”
He added: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our students. They are excited to share their insight on strategies to reduce carbon emissions and affect long-term change.”
To provide input into the white paper, the students from Sudbury Secondary School will participate in a Virtual Town Hall conversation about climate change on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 from 11 am to 5 pm.
They will connect with students from across Canada and engage with industry and educational leaders from the global environmental field, including professors from the University of Toronto and the University of Alberta. Participants will draft their strategy based on the discussion.
Students have been participating in a series of webinars in preparation for the Virtual Town Hall. “The webinars allow students to support each other through the research and planning phase of the project,” says Principal Deeth.
Green Learning Canada has partnered with TakingITGlobal and the Centre for Global Education to host the Virtual Town Hall.
