CVDCS elementary students knit blankets for patients
The label on the blankets says it all – Knitted with love by students from CVDCS elementary.
More than 40 students from Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will travel to the Shirley & Jim Fielding Northeast Cancer Centre at Health Sciences North on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025 to deliver hand-made blankets for patients.
The students are members of the school’s Elementary Knitting Club under the guidance of teachers Francine Portelance and Kaitlin Graham who are “so proud” of their students.
The Club includes primary, junior and intermediate students who knit three to four times a week during recess. Since the fall, they have assembled well over 500 squares which have been stitched together to make the colourful creations.
“Our students want to help patients who are going through a difficult time feel supported and comforted,” said Principal Patrick Hopkin.
He added: “The students understand that patients receiving cancer treatments or dialysis may need the warmth that a blanket provides. This is their way of making a difference by doing something positive.”
The students will be knitting from 10 am to 10:30 am at the entrance of the Cancer Centre on Wednesday, April 30th, 2025.
At 10:30 am, Steffany Ames-Bourque will accept the blankets on behalf of the Regional Nephrology Program.
Angela Corsi-Raso, a volunteer for the cancer centre, will accept the blankets on behalf of the North East Regional Cancer Program along with Vickie Loiselle, a cancer patient and teacher at CVDCS.
