Seven community choirs from Greater Sudbury and Manitoulin Island joined forces on Sunday, May 7, 2017 to present SOMETHING TO SING ABOUT!, an all-Canadian choral concert celebrating the 150th birthday of Canada and the Province of Ontario. Over 300 enthusiastic audience members of all ages attended the concert in the Fraser Auditorium at Laurentian University.
Participating choirs included The Bel Canto Chorus, C.R. Judd Public School, The Island Singers, Nickel City Sound, Sudbury Chamber Singers, Sudbury Secondary School and the Young Sudbury Singers.
The evening featured an all-Canadian program in a variety of styles and both official languages, including selections performed by the massed choir of over 200 voices. The audience was invited to sing along throughout the evening, including several songs originally written for the 1967 Centennial.
“On behalf of the singers, directors, organizers, and benefiting charities, we want to thank the audience members and sponsors for their generous support of this Ontario150 project,” said Ralph McIntosh, one of the event producers. “We also gratefully acknowledge the Province of Ontario for their funding support.”
The concert raised over $3,300 which has been distributed among three local charities that support children and youth: the Kiwanis Music Festival of Sudbury, the Joan Mantle Music Trust, and NEO Kids Foundation.
