Confederation Secondary School students take a stand against poverty
Some 100 students from Confederation Secondary School will visit local neighbourhoods to collect monetary donations for the Students Against Poverty Drive on Tuesday, October 17th between 3 pm and 8 pm.
The school-based program provides everyday essentials to students in need, including food, clothing, bus tickets, feminine hygiene products, shampoo and toothpaste. Funds raised will also cover the usage and maintenance costs associated with free on-site laundry facilities made available for student use.
“Last year, canvassing was a huge success,” says Confederation Secondary School Principal Pablo Gil-Alfau. “Students raised $3,000 in a single night. This year, we are hoping to surpass that total.”
Last year, the drive raised approximately $3,700. In addition, $6,000 was donated for the breakfast club and all-day snack program made available to the school’s most vulnerable students.
“The health and well-being of our students is a top priority,” says Principal Pablo Gil-Alfau. “This initiative is just another way we are helping to build global citizens who care about one another.”
Donations to the Students Against Poverty Drive can be made through an online Go Fund Me campaign at https://www.gofundme.com/4egbkd4, or by calling the school directly at 705-671-5948.
