March 7: Rainbow District School Board hosts Technological Skills Competition

Rainbow District School Board will host its 13th annual Technological Skills Competition on Wednesday, March 7, 2018. This year’s events will take place at several locations throughout Greater Sudbury and Espanola.

Some 100 secondary school students will test their skills in events including carpentry, welding, TV/video editing, photography, auto-service technology, 2D and 3D character animation, electrical installations, cabinet making and small-powered equipment, prepared speech, auto CAD, mechanical CAD and coding. Students will vie for an opportunity to compete in the provincial Skills Ontario Competition in Toronto this May.

As part of the competition, over 160 Grade 8 students will visit Cambrian College to explore skilled trades and experiential learning opportunities. Students will complete a series of hands-on workshops geared to technology on a number of topics including rocket launchers, sail design competitions, and a workshop hosted by Skills Ontario.

“The skilled trades pathway allows students to problem solve, think creatively and explore career options at an early age,” says Dana Kinsella, Experiential Learning Program Co-ordinator for Rainbow District School Board. “Reaching minds through creative and challenging learning experiences, and touching hearts by engaging students in activities they are passionate about, is a strong focus for supporting our students.”

The trades and technology departments at Cambrian College are providing the location for the welding competition and have prepared practical tests for the competition in collaboration with teachers from participating Rainbow secondary schools. They are also providing judges.

Carpentry events, including Home Building team of 4, Carpentry team of 2, and Individual Cabinet making will be hosted by the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 2486 in Azilda. They are also providing judges.

Participants will have an opportunity to go home with medals and certificates of achievement to celebrate their success. The awards ceremony will begin at 3 pm at each location. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.

Rainbow District School Board salutes the many staff members who have worked, throughout the year, in partnership with the community to organize the Technological Skills Competition.
