Students from Siming High School in the city of Ningbo, China are in Sudbury this week participating in an exchange with Lockerby Composite School. Justin, Julien, Mia, Danielle, Emma, Ashley, Michaela, Bella, Josee, Maddy and Nidal met their much-anticipated friends from China on Sunday, April 29, 2018, including Chen, Wang, Yan, Yan, Gu, Liu, Luo, Song, Xuan, Zhou and Zhou.

The students, from Siming High School in the city of Ningbo, will be in Sudbury until May 4, 2018.

“Rainbow District School Board’s International Program offers students the opportunity to experience cultural and academic collaboration between two diverse cultures,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “It’s a wonderful learning opportunity for all students.”

The students have a busy itinerary during their stay in Canada.

At Lockerby Composite School, they will participate in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.

The students will enjoy activities at Science North and Dynamic Earth, including the planetarium exhibition of Mindwaadizidin “Under the Same Stars,” which features a smudging ceremony, a drumming circle and Indigenous dance. There are also a number of other excursions planned – a day trip to Manitoulin Island, group outings to movies, and valuable time with host families.

“An exchange creates lifelong memories for students, while strengthening global relationships,” says Lockerby Composite School Principal Craig Runciman. “Rainbow International offers students the opportunity to witness the beauty of the world through education. We are delighted to share in this exciting experience.”

The Lockerby Composite School students who are participating in the exchange will head to Ningbo for five days in October 2018. A beautiful coastal city south of Shanghai, Ningbo is the second largest port in China, and the third largest in the world. While there, Lockerby students will participate in excursions to Hangzhou and Shanghai.
