May 9 and 10: Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair brings the past to life

The Bell Mansion, Residential Schools, The Group of Seven and The Black Donnellys. These are some of the many projects that will be on display at the 23rd Annual Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair on Thursday, May 9 and Friday, May 10, 2019 at Laurentian University in Sudbury. The community is invited to view the projects in the Alumni Hall (Fraser Auditorium Building) from 7:30 pm to 8:30 pm on Thursday, May 9, 2019. Admission is free.

Close to 400 Rainbow elementary students from Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin will attend the exhibition and heritage celebration. In addition to student projects, the event will feature local displays, workshops and a special live performance by local entertainer Andy Lowe.

“The Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair gives youth an opportunity to investigate, discover and creatively capture history,” says Enza MacEachern Co-Chair of the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair Organizing Committee. “Students will share stories of their family and community, which will result in an impressive showcase of our local culture and Canadian heritage.”

Over the past 23 years, student presentations have been as varied as the number of participants, drawing on a wide range of creative project formats, including dramatic and musical presentations, videos, posters, maps, essays, and 3-D displays, often with props and costumes.

The Heritage Fair Awards Ceremony will take place at Laurentian University’s Fraser Auditorium on Friday, May 10, 2019 from 12:30 to 1:30 pm. Parents and guardians are welcome to join their children. Admission is free.

A number of special awards will be presented, including Canada’s National History Society Award; the Ontario Heritage Fairs Association Founders’ Award; the Ontario Heritage Fairs Association Multicultural Award; the Ontario Historical Society Award; the Archives of Ontario Award; the Ontario Genealogical Society Award; the Ontario Heritage Fair Association Historical Thinking Award; the Ontario Historical Society Reading & Remembrance Award; the Ontario Women’s History Network Award; the Ontario Library Association Award; the Ontario Human Rights Award; the First Nation, Métis, Inuit Award; the Finnish Canadian Historical Society of Sudbury Award; the Sudbury Labour Council Award; and the Shirley O’Neil Young Historian Award.

Judges will select two projects from the local fair to be showcased at the Provincial Heritage Fair at York University on June 8 and 9, 2019.
