Festive Events in Rainbow Schools 2024
A.B. Ellis Public School
Students in the Grade 2/3 and 5/6 classes from A.B. Ellis Public School visited a local nursing home to sing carols to residents. Grade 5/6 students will return to spread some extra cheer prior to the holiday break. In the week leading up to the holidays, staff and students are invited to take part in spirit days which includes wearing holiday gear on Monday, December 16th, favourite sports jerseys on Tuesday, December 17th and a holiday or winter hat day on Wednesday, December 18th. During the middle block, families are welcome to the school for a holiday concert. Doors open at 11 am and the show begins at 11:30 am. Ugly sweater day will take place on Thursday, December 19th, and on Friday, December 20th, staff and students can wear their coziest pajamas. To end the week, staff will treat students to a pancake breakfast in the gym, followed by fun learning activities in classes.
Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School has a variety of festive activities planned for the holiday season. On December 7th, some 92 choir members from Kindergarten to Grade 8 performed at the CTV Lions Children’s Christmas Telethon. The Concert Band performed at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School’s “A Flurry of Feelings” Winter Concert on December 9th. A Holiday Showcase took place on Thursday, December 12th featuring the Choir, Kindergarten students, and a multicultural musical by primary students. Students will enjoy breakfast with Santa on Wednesday, December 18th and a trip to Silver City Cinemas.
Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School will collect non-perishable food items in support of the Manitoulin Family Resources Christmas Basket Campaign until Monday, December 16th. The Assiginack Public School Choir performed for local seniors on December 11th. They also enjoyed a special luncheon. The Choir, alongside the Grade 2/3 drummers, performed at the Assiginack tree lighting ceremony on December 6th. In the lead up to the holidays, students will enjoy spirit days including pajama/plaid day, hot chocolate day and winter toque day. A holiday concert will take place on Monday, December 16th at 6 pm. Non-perishable food items will be accepted. Everyone is welcome.
Barrydowne College
Each Wednesday in the lead up to the winter break, students from Barrydowne College are invited to make crafts including handmade wreaths with fresh greens, Christmas candy bouquets, as well as pamper gift packs including handmade whipped body butter, bath salts, beeswax candles, and essential oil rollers. All items will be made with natural ingredients and packaged sustainably. Students can also bake an assortment of goodies to give to someone special or enjoy at school. Meal boxes will be prepared and distributed for families in need within the school community.
C.R. Judd Public School
C.R. Judd Public School is once again participating in the Capreol Bread & Roses Food Drive until December 13th. Students in Grades 6 to 8 canvassed the community on December 9th. Families are welcome to purchase a star. All proceeds will support the campaign. The School Council hosted a “Selfie With Santa Photo Booth” on December 4th. On Friday, December 13th, students will make ornaments and crafts during Santa’s Workshop. That evening, Jaguar families are invited to a family movie night to watch “How The Grinch Stole Christmas”. Proceeds will support the breakfast program. The school will host a festive concert for friends and family on Thursday, December 19th in the gym. Baked goods and ornaments will be available for purchase. All proceeds will support the food drive. In the lead up to the holidays, students will enjoy a “Countdown to Christmas” spirit week with seasonal-themed activities and challenges.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Students from Central Manitoulin Public School will discuss worldwide holidays and will participate in various festive activities and spirit days. Students celebrated the season during their annual holiday concert on December 10th. The theme was “Hockey Night at C.M.P.S.”. Staff and students also collected non-perishable food items to support the Manitoulin Family Resources Christmas Basket Campaign. On Wednesday, December 18th, staff and students are encouraged to dress in their favourite holiday pajamas for a pancake breakfast, followed by a school-wide sing-along of holiday favourites.
Charles C. McLean Public School
Charles C. McLean will host a holiday concert and sing-along on Wednesday, December 18th at 9 am and 6 pm in the school gym. There will be a silver collection at the door to support the School Council’s school improvement initiatives. A cake auction and silent auction will also take place. All proceeds will support the Grade 8 year-end trip and School Council initiatives. The school hosted a food drive throughout December. Donations will support the Food Cupboard in Gore Bay. Grade 2 classes will host a “Kids Shop for Free” event on Thursday, December 19th, where students can choose a special gift for a family member and have it wrapped to take home. The Eco Club will host a clothing drive. Parents/guardians can select gently used items the evening of the concert. A school-wide pancake breakfast will take place on Friday, December 20th.
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Staff, students and families at CVDCS are working diligently to make the holiday season merry and bright through their participation in the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. Throughout the month, school-wide virtual read alouds will take place focusing on various holidays celebrated at this time of year. Secondary students will be treated to a hot chocolate bar hosted by Headstrong on Friday, December 13th, and elementary students will enjoy the tasty treat on Thursday, December 19th. All students will enjoy a holiday feast on Tuesday, December 17th. Students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 will showcase festive cheer during a holiday concert for families on Wednesday, December 18th at 9:15 am and 11:45 am. The School Council will host a penny table raffle at the concert. Proceeds will support future school activities. Virtual Christmas Bingo will take place on Friday, December 20th.
Churchill Public School
In the spirit of caring and kindness, Churchill Public School students will take part in the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. In the lead up to the holidays, students will enjoy spirit days with warm and cozy winter sweaters, channel your flannel, pajamas and stuffie day. In the week leading up to the holidays, families are invited to classroom activities such as hot chocolate and treats, holiday cookie decorating, ornament making, crafts and winter Bingo. Grade 3 students will watch the production of “Frozen Jr.” at Sudbury Secondary School on Thursday, December 19th. The school Choir and Ojibwe drummers will perform on Friday, December 20th at 10 am in the gym. Parents and guardians of Choir members and drummers are welcome to attend. That same day, there will be a sing-along for all students.
Jean Hanson Public School
Students from Jean Hanson Public School will collect non-perishable food items for the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. Students will enjoy various spirit days such as flannel day, misel”toes”day and Whoville Hair Day. Students will also decorate ornaments and build gingerbread houses. Parents/guardians are invited to a class-based Christmas party on Friday, December 13th to create a Christmas craft with their child followed by a school-wide sing-along with hot chocolate and cookies. On Thursday, December 19th, students will enjoy pajama day and a pancake breakfast. Santa will make a special appearance to deliver a gift to all students.
Lansdowne Public School
In the spirit of caring and kindness, Lansdowne Public School will proudly participate in the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. To spread holiday cheer, students will enjoy a variety of festive spirit days, including Red and Green Day, Cozy Winter Sweaters Day, Pajama Day, Holiday Headgear Day and Comfy Clothes Day. Activities will also include door decorating, Bingo and a much-anticipated pancake breakfast. Families are welcome to celebrate the season during the primary winter concert and a sing-along led by the school Choir. The Go-Green Club will host a special Holiday Extravaganza, where students can choose recycled gifts, fostering the joy of eco-friendly giving.
Larchwood Public School
Larchwood Public School kicked off the season of giving by canvassing local neighbourhoods to collect donations for the annual Falls Canned Food Drive. The Larchwood Choir performed at the CTV Lions Club Christmas Telethon. The Choir will also perform at the Dowling Leisure Centre Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, December 13th. Students will take part in kindness projects, including making cards for seniors in long-term care facilities. For “The 12 Days of Kindness”, students are encouraged to complete random acts of kindness both at school, home and in the community. The last week of school will bring an afternoon of math games and hot chocolate in groups, a winter concert and bake sale on Tuesday, December 17th, a school-wide trip to Science North on Thursday, December 19th, and a pancake breakfast and winter sing-along for all on Friday, December 20th. Students showcasing the value of community will be recognized during a Dare to Care Kindness Assembly on Wednesday, December 18th.
Lasalle Elementary School
This holiday season, Lasalle Elementary School will embrace the joy of giving. Students and staff will collect non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. Throughout December, students will enjoy fun theme days. Kindergarten families are invited to a heartwarming event filled with stories, snuggles and hot chocolate. The school’s Snowflake Waltz (La valse des flocons de neige) festive concert will take place on Wednesday, December 18th. Performances will take place at 9:30 am and 1 pm in the school gym.
Lasalle Secondary School
Lasalle Secondary School will host a series of daily events in the lead up to the holiday break including door decorating, a pie eating contest, a gingerbread house decorating contest, festive socks day, white out and national pastry day, a free hot chocolate bar, holiday hooligans, chocolate covered anything day, pancakes and pajamas, Christmas films, a selfie with Santa and a sing-along in the gym.
Levack Public School
Students at Levack Public School are spreading kindness through their support of the local community food drive. The twelve days of Christmas will bring a different activity each day in the lead up to the holiday break including ornament making, breakfast with Santa, letters to Santa, decorating your teacher, a school feast and the annual holiday concert. A holiday sing-along will take place on Friday, December 20th.
Little Current Public School
Staff from Little Current Public School are thrilled to invite families to a Community Holiday Open House on Wednesday, December 18th from 5 pm to 7 pm. Families can participate in a variety of activities including a free “kids only” shopping spree, a Choir performance, crafts, cookie decorating, card making, a visit with Santa, and a food drive for Manitoulin Family Resources. These activities have been graciously arranged by community partners. Leading up to the holidays, students and staff are invited to take part in theme days such as red and green/festive socks day, wacky festive hair/decorate yourself day, holiday sweater day and pajama day.
Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School is participating in the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. Grade 7 and 8 students canvassed the local community to collect non-perishable food items and monetary donations. A homeroom challenge for secondary students will determine who raised the most funds or collected the most food items. The intermediate and secondary Student Councils have organized festive activities and spirit days for the week leading up to the holidays.
Lockerby Composite School
Staff and students at Lockerby Composite School are collecting monetary donations and non-perishable food items for the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. In the lead up to the winter break, Lockerby’s Student Council will host 12 holiday-themed spirit days including candy cane day, pajama day, ugly sweater day and more. Some English classes will take part in Operation Christmas Cards with Lockerby Legion Branch #564. The music department will present a Holiday Concert on Tuesday, December 17th in the auditorium featuring the Lockerby Choir, Guitar Ensemble, Grade 9 Class Acts and the Junior and Senior Concert Bands along with the MacLeod Public School Mustangs.
MacLeod Public School
Throughout December, staff and students of MacLeod Public School are participating in the Edgar Burton Kids Helping Kids Food Drive. Proceeds from the school-wide bake sale will support the Sudbury Food Bank. On Thursday, December 19th and Friday, December 20th, the school will host the annual Christmas sing-along in the gym from 9:30 am to 10:30 am. All parents/guardians and grandparents are welcome to attend.
Manitoulin Secondary School
Students at Manitoulin Secondary School will ring in the holidays with the 12 Days of Christmas countdown including Kahoot, free hot chocolate, photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, karaoke, holiday trivia, a Headstrong bake exchange, cookie decorating, a talent show, ugly sweater day, movies, and open gym.
Markstay Public School
The entire school community kicked off the season of giving with the annual Markstay Food Drive. Staff and students participated in the Markstay Santa Claus Parade. Staff, students and parent volunteers joined the Markstay-Warren Fire Department and members of the Ontario Provincial Police for a “Walk of Caring” to hand deliver non-perishable food items to the Markstay Food Bank. Students participated in a door decorating contest. All students will enjoy a pancake breakfast on Monday, December 16th. The school will host a Winter Wonderland concert on Tuesday, December 17th in the school gym. Family and friends are welcome. Students will also take part in various culturally responsive spirit days leading up to the break.
Northeastern Elementary School
Throughout the month of December, many holiday-themed events will take place at Northeastern Elementary School. To kick off the festivities, staff organized an Underground Spirit Week where students had to guess what is similar with the staff. The entire school joined together for a kick-off assembly for the Kids Helping Kids Food Drive. Families were invited to bring in food items and monetary donations, and enjoyed a bowl of warm chili. In the lead up to the holiday break, students are welcome to take part in daily activities including festive sweaters, accessories and pajama day, Bingo and a staff versus student volleyball game. On Wednesday, December 18th, the school will host a festive feast for the entire school community to join together in celebration of the holidays. On Friday, December 20th, students will enjoy a special visit from Santa and a pancake breakfast.
Princess Anne Public School
In the spirit of kindness, Princess Anne Public School is collecting non-perishable food items for the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. Grade 7 and 8 students canvassed the school neighbourhood on December 11th. Students and staff are also invited to take part in the “12 Days of Cheer” including 12 festive-themed spirit days leading up to the winter break. Families enjoyed the sounds of the season during the annual Christmas Concert on December 12th which featured classes from Kindergarten to Grade 3, the Choir, Recorder Ensemble and Concert Band. The festivities will wrap-up with a holiday luncheon for staff and students on Tuesday, December 17th, a pancake breakfast sponsored and prepared by Eastlink on Thursday, December 19th, and pajama day on Friday, December 20th.
Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Students from Queen Elizabeth II Public School will perform for families during a holiday concert on Wednesday, December 18th at 11:45 am. Families are welcome to support the school for a chance to win a holiday-themed basket and to enjoy some tasty treats at the annual bake sale.
R.H. Murray Public School
R.H. Murray Public School staff and students have joined together to collect non-perishable food items and monetary donations in support of the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. On December 12th, families and community members joined staff and students for a traditional outdoor Christmas concert. On Saturday, December 14th, the Snowflake Choir will perform at the Anderson Farm’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. Students will enjoy a turkey feast on Wednesday, December 19th. Themed activities including door decorating, a festive play day, and caroling will take place in the lead up to the holidays.
R.L. Beattie Public School
In the lead-up to the holidays, students from R.L. Beattie Public School will take part in various festive activities in classes. Students will spread holiday cheer throughout the community by creating handmade cards for residents at a local retirement home. Parents/guardians are also invited to join their children in a festive in-class art project. Other classes will enjoy reading activities. During the final week before the holidays, students will enjoy daily spirit days. A sing-along will bring the entire school community together in joyful song on Friday, December 20th. Ornaments crafted by students were sold at the Winter Craft Fair to support the Edgar Burton Food Drive.
Redwood Acres Public School
The entire Redwood Acres Public School community collected non-perishable food items in support of the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. The school hosted its annual turkey feast on December 10th. The annual Christmas concert will take place on Tuesday, December 17th with performances in the morning and afternoon.
Sudbury Secondary School
Staff and students of Sudbury Secondary School will join together on Wednesday, December 18th for a magnificent holiday feast complete with turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetables, stuffing, and homemade sugar and gingerbread cookies baked by Ms. Doiron and students in hospitality classes. This event is a spectacular showcase of North Star spirit that allows students from a number of classes and clubs to share in the joy and wonder of the festive season. This year’s feast will bring together over 800 students and staff from Sudbury Secondary School, Adult Day School, Princess Anne Public School and Lansdowne Public School. The event is made possible through the generosity of sponsors and staff volunteers. The Student Parliament will host their annual door decorating contest, a long-standing tradition that makes the hallways come to life with Christmas spirit. Students will once again work with community outreach organizations to provide warm clothes and snacks in support of school families and the downtown community. The greatest “Holiday Assembly” auditions have begun. The talent show will take place on Friday, December 20th, which will culminate with a fun-filled staff skit to kick off the holidays.
Valley View Public School
Many festive events will take place at Valley View Public School to celebrate the holiday season. Grade 7 classes will lead an initiative to create holiday cards for seniors in long-term care facilities, demonstrating respect for elders and embracing the Seven Grandfather Teachings. Student Parliament and Grade 8 students spearheaded the Edgar Burton Christmas Food Drive. The “Valley View Post Office” is open as students practise letter writing to extend holiday wishes within the school community. A holiday concert will showcase student talent for Grades 1 to 6 on Wednesday December 18th at 10 am. Kindergarten students will host families for “Mingle Jingle” on Thursday, December 19th at 11:30 am.
Walden Public School
The Walden community has been busy giving back this season through a variety of initiatives including an overwhelming response to the “Giving Tree”. Families were invited to take a tag off the giving tree and purchase the item to give back to families in the school community. The giving will continue as students walk down to the local food bank and help fill the shelves with non-perishable food items and donations for the Edgar Burton Kids Helping Kids Food Drive. The entire school community will join together on Tuesday, December 17th for the Holiday Wishes Concert. The week will culminate with a school-wide pancake breakfast and snuggle up reading session with family.
