Turn of the Millennium Time Capsule opened at Valley View Public School

On December 22, 2000, Valley View Public School Principal Linda Bartlett sealed an above ground time capsule to capture a moment in history.

On June 20, 2025, staff, students, alumni and guests joined together for a special assembly to open the time capsule filled with memories and mementos from the turn of the millennium.

An original time capsule, sealed in 1980 by eight students and their teacher, was opened in the year 2000. It was decided back then that the time capsule would continue to evolve.

“This really was the perfect way to wrap-up the school year,” said Principal Carrie Wilson. “Students enjoyed the opportunity to get a first hand look into what life was like at Valley View Public School all those years ago.”

The time capsule included written stories from students, a notebook with morning announcements, a handmade quilt, curriculum documents, books, compact discs, yearbooks, class photos, spirit wear, magazines, newspaper clippings and grocery flyers, information about the 2000 federal election and the Summer Olympics in Sydney as well as drawings predicting what a futuristic classroom would look like.

The contents will be displayed in a cabinet in the school’s main foyer for the upcoming school year.

Following the assembly, guests had the opportunity to view the capsule’s contents up close while sharing stories and reminiscing about memorable moments.

“This was the best school to retire from,” said former Valley View Public School Principal Linda Bartlett. “There is so much pride and school spirit that resides within the walls of this school.”

She added: “I was privileged to have a career doing something that I loved. To be able to come back after 25 years and see so many familiar faces has been truly amazing.”

Caitlyn Prevost Gutjahr, a graduate of the class of 2001, reflected fondly on her time at the school. “My most treasured memories are the friendships I made and our three-day Grade 8 ski trip to Snow Valley, Blue Mountain and Mount St. Louis Moonstone.”

She added: “I drove six hours from Ottawa to be here and could not be more excited. I haven’t seen many of the people here today since the summer of 2001. What a trip it’s been!”

During the 2025-2026 school year, the capsule will be refilled with fresh items – preserving memories and experiences for future generations to discover in 2050.

“This day was truly one for the history books,” said Principal Carrie Wilson. “I extend a special thank you to our staff, students and guests who were able to join us. We were thrilled to hear some of the wonderful stories shared among peers and look forward to keeping this tradition alive for generations to come.”
