Rainbow Schools mark Remembrance Day 2025
All Rainbow Schools will observe Remembrance Day in the lead up to Tuesday, November 11, 2025. Activities and lessons will highlight the significance of the day.
Flags will fly at half-mast at Rainbow Schools in Sudbury, Espanola and Manitoulin Island from Saturday, November 8, 2025 to mark Indigenous Veterans Day to Tuesday, November 11, 2025 to mark Remembrance Day.
Centre for Education
Staff at the Board Office will observe November 8th, Indigenous Veterans Day, and November 11th, Remembrance Day, with a virtual ceremony at 10:40 am. The ceremony will provide the opportunity to reflect on the meaning of honouring and remembering the sacrifices made by veterans, including the important contributions of Canadians in the Battle of Vimy Ridge in WWI. There will also be a tribute to those who currently serve in our military. The historical significance of the poppy will be shared. The ceremony will culminate with the Last Post followed by two minutes of silence, Reveille and O Canada.
A.B. Ellis Public School
Staff and students from A.B. Ellis Public School joined the Espanola High School community for a Remembrance Day ceremony on Friday, November 7th. The primary school choir sang “Thank You” by Gwen Plitt and students assisted with the laying of wreaths. This important event marked the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy.
Alexander Public School
Staff and students from Alexander Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day with a bilingual ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th at 9:45 am. The ceremony will include poetry readings, the laying of wreaths by classes, and a moment of silence. Students will also take part in meaningful conversations about the significance of the day to honour the courage and devotion of the brave men and women who served their country. Grade 8 students will attend the Civic Remembrance Day ceremony, presented by the Royal Canadian Legion, at the Sudbury Community Arena at 10:30 a.m. Poppy donations will be accepted for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564. All are welcome to attend.
Algonquin Road Public School
Algonquin Road Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony in the school gym on Tuesday, November 11th at 10 am. This gathering will provide an opportunity for students, staff and extended family to pause and pay respect and gratitude to those who have served in the armed forces – past and present. The ceremony will begin with a candlelight procession followed by songs and readings by various classes. After the laying of the wreaths and the playing of “The Last Post”, the entire school community will reflect on those being honoured. A slideshow presentation will highlight personal stories and photos submitted by families and staff.
Barrydowne College
Barrydowne College will mark Remembrance Day with a ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th at 10:40 am. Students and staff will gather to honour the memory and legacy of Canada’s brave service members. Those present will reflect on the history and significance of the day including our freedoms and democracy. At 11 am, two minutes of silence will be observed as a tribute to the men and women who have fought and lost their lives in conflict.
Charles C. McLean Public School
Students in Grades 3 to 8 from Charles C. McLean Public School will attend the community Remembrance Day Service organized by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #514 at the Cenotaph in Gore Bay on Tuesday, November 11th at 11 am.
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
On Tuesday, November 11th, students and staff from Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will join together to honour the bravery, sacrifice, and service of Canada’s veterans and those who continue to serve today. The Remembrance Day ceremony will include readings, music, and moments of reflection in memory of the men and women who fought and still fight for the freedoms we enjoy. A moment of silence will be observed at 11 am – joining Canadians across the country in remembrance. Students are encouraged to wear red and black or a poppy in a show of support and respect.
C.R. Judd Public School
In the lead up to Remembrance Day, students from C.R. Judd Public School will participate in activities and discussions to learn about the significance of the day and to honour the sacrifices of veterans, past and present, in securing our freedom and democracy. Students will lead a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th at 11:45 am. The ceremony will include student poems, songs and art. Parents/guardians are welcome to attend.
Charles C. McLean Public School
On Tuesday, November 11th, Central Manitoulin Public School will host the annual Remembrance Day service. Staff and students will welcome veterans and cadets as well as members of the Legion and community to pay tribute to Canadians who served our country. The service will include contributions from students including artwork, poems, a video tribute, and a performance by the school choir. Following the ceremony, students in Grades 4 and 6 will attend the community service at the Mindemoya Cenotaph. Hand-painted rocks with poppies will be placed at the Cenotaph on behalf of staff and students.
Confederation Secondary School
Confederation Secondary School will mark Remembrance Day on Tuesday, November 11th at 10:45 am with a video created by staff and students. The video was developed with materials from the Royal Canadian Legion and reflects the contributions of our fallen soldiers who served to protect our freedom and democracy. The video will include the singing of “O Canada”, a reading of “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae, the playing of “The Last Post” and two minutes of silence. A display of remembrance in the main foyer honours those who sacrificed their lives to protect and preserve our great nation.
Larchwood Public School
Larchwood Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th at 2 pm in the school gym. Families and members of the community are welcome to pay tribute, honour and thank the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace. The school choir will perform. Students will also participate in the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual poster and literary contest.
Little Current Public School
Little Current Public School, in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #177, will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th at 10 am in the school gym. Families and members of the community are welcome to pay tribute, honour and thank the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace.
Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
A schoolwide Remembrance Day ceremony was held at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School on Thursday, November 6th in collaboration with members of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #564. The ceremony commemorated the many sacrifices of the men and women who fought bravely to serve and protect our country.
Lockerby Composite School
Each year, staff and students from Lockerby Composite School collect artifacts and mementos of someone who served in a 20th century conflict with a connection to the school. All items are on display in the school’s main foyer as a symbol of remembrance. The entire school will mark Remembrance Day with readings, the playing of “The Last Post”, “Reveille”, and “O Canada” before 11 am on Tuesday, November 11th. Some students from Lockerby will attend the Remembrance Day service at the Sudbury Arena.
MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th at 10:30 am in the gym. Families and members of the community are welcome to pay tribute, honour and thank the men and women who served Canada in times of war, military conflict and peace. Students will participate in the Lockerby Legion Branch #564 Youth Education Program. Through the program, students will learn about, and honour, the men and women who served through their own works of poetry, drawings and short stories.
Manitoulin Secondary School
Manitoulin Secondary School students will honour those who served with two minutes of silence, which will include a slide show viewed in each classroom with a recording of the administration team laying wreaths at the school’s outdoor memorial. The memorial, which honours Indigenous Veterans from Manitoulin, has stood since May 16, 2011, with the words “May Peace Prevail” serving as a reminder of the collective commitment and hope for the future. Indigenous veterans were honoured November 1st and at a schoolwide feast on November 6th with the addition of new eagle feathers to the MSS Eagle Staff. Words were shared by Sunset Sagutch and Jean Debassige.
N’Swakamok Alternative School
For Remembrance Day, students from the N’Swakamok Alternative School will attend the municipal service at the Sudbury Arena and will learn about Indigenous perspectives.
Queen Elizabeth II Public School
Students from Queen Elizabeth II Public School will take part in a schoolwide Remembrance Day assembly in the gym on Tuesday, November 11th at 10 am. This important event will commemorate the sacrifice our veterans, past and present, have made to secure our freedom and democracy. Families are welcome to attend.
R.H. Murray Public School
Staff and students at R.H. Murray Public School will commemorate Remembrance Day on Tuesday, November 11th with a schoolwide ceremony at 10 am in the gym. The service will include a musical performance, poetry readings, the laying of wreaths as well as videos. Members of the community are welcome to attend.
R.L. Beattie Public School
R.L. Beattie will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th to honour those who served and sacrificed for our peace and freedom. The school choir will perform and several students will present readings. This meaningful event allows the school community to reflect on the bravery and dedication of those who fought for our country. The entire school will also join together to create a collaborative piece of art made with student poppies and maple leaves as a symbol of unity, remembrance, and hope for peace. Grade 6 students will write letters to veterans to express their gratitude and appreciation for their service.
Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will honour the sacrifices of Canadians during a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th in the school gym. The school choir will sing “Make a Difference” by Denise Gagne to remind us that we can work together to make our world a better place. Classes will sing “O Canada” and recite “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. All classes will lay wreaths. The ceremony will conclude with a moment of silence at 11 am to commemorate the end of World War I and the many lives lost in war and times of conflict.
Sudbury Secondary School
Several classes from Sudbury Secondary School will learn about Indigenous perspectives for Remembrance Day. Some students will watch the National Remembrance Day Assembly in the Sheridan Auditorium, while others will attend the municipal service at the Sudbury Arena. At the event, two students in the Arts Education Program will perform – Chloe Gruber will sing “O Canada” and Ace Martin will recite “In Flanders Fields”. Original documents from World War II including letters from soldiers, a school newsletter, photographs and news clippings are on display in the school library. A special binder was created in dedication to those alumni who lost their lives. The display also includes an original painting by Arts Education alumnus Amon Ranger of a local veteran and Eagle Staff Carrier Corporal Jason Nakogee.
Walden Public School
Walden Public School will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Tuesday, November 11th. The ceremony will include performances from the school choir as well as several classes – in English and French. The ceremony will conclude with the laying of the wreaths, the playing of “The Last Post”, a minute of silence and “The Rouse”. Families and community members are welcome to join. The school choir was invited by the Walden Seniors to participate in a Remembrance Day ceremony at the Cenotaph on Sixth Avenue. Students will perform “O Canada” and “Highway of Heroes” for members of the community.
Westmount Avenue Public School
Students at Westmount Avenue Public School will display their class wreaths for the community on Tuesday, November 11th. Students will also read books and sing songs about the importance of remembering our brave soldiers.
