Westmount Avenue Public School receives $10,000 Indigo grant to expand library
Westmount Avenue Public School received a $10,000 grant from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation to expand its school library.
The Indigo Love of Reading Foundation has committed $1.8 million to elementary schools in Canadian communities. Funds will be used to update and diversify book collections to ensure students have access to titles that reflect their histories, identities and experiences.
Westmount Avenue Public School is a Kindergarten to Grade 6 school with intensive support program (ISP) classrooms. Programming focuses on the development of social, language and communication skills with functional academics.
“This grant will allow our staff to create a library that is responsive to the unique strengths and needs of our students,” said Arynn Frantz, Principal of Westmount Avenue Public School. “The new resources will support literacy, curiosity and personal growth.”
The school library collection will be expanded through the purchase of a variety of books, including durable board and sensory books. Books will be purchased in phases, prioritizing titles that support diversity, inclusion and essential social skills such as friendship and turn-taking.
Funding will also be used to create a welcoming space where students can explore, learn how to navigate and use library resources, and most importantly, discover a love of reading.
“Books provide students with opportunities to enjoy new experiences, learn about diverse perspectives, and expand their understanding of the world around them,” said Principal Arynn Frantz.
She added: “We are very grateful to the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation for its generous support of our school community. The Foundation’s commitment to fostering a love of reading will have a lasting impact on our students for years to come.”
