Rainbow Schools celebrate Franco-Ontarian Day on September 25th

Staff and students in Rainbow Schools will celebrate the rich history, culture and contributions of Franco-Ontarians on Friday, September 25, 2026.

On Franco-Ontarian Day, schools will fly the Franco-Ontarian Flag / le drapeau franco-ontarien or display the flag in their schools.

The drapeau franco-ontarien was first raised on September 25, 1975 at the University of Sudbury. In 2001, the flag became the official emblem of Franco-Ontarians.

“Rainbow District School Board offers French Immersion and Core French and we welcome the opportunity to come together to promote student engagement in and appreciation for Franco-Ontarian culture,” said Chief Executive Officer Bruce Bourget.

“The fact that the Franco-Ontarian Flag was created in Sudbury makes the day meaningful for students,” added CEO Bourget. “When students make connections to the community in which they live, learning becomes that much more relevant.”

Staff and students are invited to wear green and white as they join with the community to share their pride in the French-language and engage in a variety of learning activities.

Students in Rainbow Schools will gain a greater understanding of the significance of the French-language population and the importance of the French-language locally and across Ontario.
