What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

Grade 7 and 8 students participate in Math, Science and Technology Olympics

Grade 7 and 8 students in Rainbow Schools are bringing the Olympics to Sudbury – the Math, Science, and Technology Olympics that is!  It all takes place on Tuesday, April 13, 2010 at Science North in Sudbury.

“Over 200 students will take part in this event, which has become an annual tradition for Rainbow District School Board,” says Board Chair Tyler Campbell. “This dynamic, hands-on learning opportunity allows students to work as a team to solve problems in math, science and technology in a fun and creative way.”

In the morning, students will answer questions to test their knowledge in math, science and technology.  “Teachers from Rainbow Schools have worked diligently to prepare the questions,” says Michele Henschel, Coordinator for Science and Technology for Rainbow District School Board.  “At the end of the day, teachers will tally the correct answers to identify the winners.”

In the early afternoon, students will participate in a design challenge. “This is an on-site event prepared and evaluated by the staff at Science North,” says Henschel. “It usually involves building a structure of some type with simple materials such as straws and popsicle sticks.  There is a catch. The structure must be used to accomplish a task.”

The event will end with an awards ceremony that parents/guardians and members of the public are welcome to attend. The awards ceremony will begin at 2:30 pm in the Inco Cavern.

“Team spirit is contagious at this event! All participating students receive a t-shirt with the Math, Science, and Technology Olympics logo,” says Henschel. “They receive the t-shirts in advance so they can personalize them for their particular team.  This brings a bit of artistic flair to this educational experience.”
