Rainbow Schools Celebrate Music Monday on May 3, 2010

On Monday, May 3rd, 2010 students in many Rainbow Schools will participate in special music activities designed to commemorate the 6th annual Music Monday.

Since the inaugural event in May 2005, students and teachers across Canada have come together on the first Monday in May to engage in a simultaneous public celebration of the power of music.

The goals of Music Monday are to celebrate the importance of music in our society, to demonstrate the vital role music education plays in the lives of Canadians, and to encourage public support of quality music programs in public schools.

"Music Monday serves as a tangible reminder of how school music programs nurture compassionate, innovative and productive citizens," says Jean Hanson, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. "It also reminds us of the important links between school music programs and the cultural vitality of our country."

She adds: "We extend our appreciation and thanks to all of the students who have participated in special musical activities this year, to the music teachers who have organized the performances and fostered a love of music in our children, and to the parents/guardians and other public stakeholders who support the music and arts programs in Rainbow Schools."

Bands, choirs, guitar ensembles, and hand chime choirs from local elementary and secondary schools will share their love of music by staging various music activities and concert presentations. Many Rainbow students will join with other schools across Canada to perform the Music Monday theme song simultaneously at 1 pm.

The whole school will gather at 10 am in the gym for their annual Music Monday celebration. Selected classes will present their favourite songs, including K’naan’s "Wavin’ Flag", the theme song for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Nickel City Sound, a local women’s barbershop chorus, will also perform for the students. Everyone will join to sing the Music Monday theme song "Sing, Sing".

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will stage an outdoor concert at 1 pm.  The entire school will sing "Our Song" and the school band will perform.

Copper Cliff Public School

Copper Cliff Public School will stage a spring concert under the direction of Valerie Whitehead at 11:30 am in the gymnasium. Each class will perform a selection that they have learned in music class this year, and the extra-curricular groups of two handchime choirs, a vocal choir, and a band will perform various selections. The concert will culminate with the entire student body singing the Music Monday theme song, "Sing Sing".  Everyone is welcome!

Music teachers Stacey Gianfrancesco and Kristen Bonany will stage workshops combining Music and French with their primary and junior students. The classes will learn a French action song and sing it as a school in celebration of Music Monday.

Monetville Public School is celebrating Music Monday on Tuesday, May 4th, in order to include their Junior Kindergarten students. All classes will present musical numbers at a concert starting at 1:35 pm, and a local guest musician will also perform. Donations to the school’s music fund will be accepted at the door

Redwood Acres Public School will hold an informal concert beginning at 1:45 pm in the gym.  The concert will feature the Music Monday song and short musical selections from each grade.  All parents are welcomed to join in.

Lively District Secondary School will infuse the school with music all day long on Monday, May 3rd. They will showcase student ensembles and musicians throughout the day over the PA. Students will travel from class to class accompanied by the sounds of their fellow classmates. A group of students will perform impromptu, "guerilla"  flash-concerts of "Sing Sing" throughout the school day

A community concert featuring instrumental and choral groups from Lasalle Secondary School and Sudbury Secondary School will be held at the Sudbury Secondary School Sheridan Auditorium, beginning at 7:30 pm on Monday, May 3rd. This fundraising concert is in support of the Joan Mantle Music Trust, which allocates funds to refresh, modernize and revitalize secondary school music programs in the Rainbow District School Board. Tickets, at $10 for adults/seniors and $5 for students/children, are available at the participating schools and at the door.
