Espanola High School

Espanola High School will host its annual Trades/Career Day on Wednesday, May 5th for Grades 8 to 12. The day is designed to highlight some of the career pathways available to students as they pursue their secondary school education. The Trades/Career Day will take place in the Espanola Regional Recreation Complex Arena (adjacent to the school). Grade 8 students from Espanola High School’s local elementary feeder schools will attend during the morning. High school students will attend in the afternoon. There will be over 30 presenters on hand with many interactive displays to engage students.
Espanola High School’s Annual Open House will be held on Wednesday, May 5th. At 5:30 pm, there will be a free barbecue in the courtyard. From 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm, visitors are welcome to view the interactive displays on Co-operative Education, Science, French, Art and Forestry. From 6:30 pm to 9 pm, there will be a concert of music, drama and improv in the B1 Gym.

On Wednesday, May 5th, poet laureate Roger Nash will visit Lockerby to speak to Grade 12 students at 12:10 pm (ENG4UL class during period 3). Dr. Nash will discuss the writing process, cover some poetry and lead a discussion of course-related themes and topics. He will also speak about the postsecondary literary possibilities available to students.

Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School invites the public to its annual Art Show and Coffee House. The show opens on Wednesday, May 5th, 2010 from 3 pm to 5 pm, and continues on Thursday, May 6th from 9 am to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. On Thursday night, students and staff will perform at a special Coffee House to support the Breakfast Club. Everyone is invited to bring family and friends for an evening filled with art and music. Sudbury Secondary School will host the Joan Mantle Music Trust Community Concert on Music Monday. The concert will begin at 7:30 pm in the Sheridan Auditorium on Monday, May 3rd and will feature instrumental and choral groups from Lasalle Secondary School and Sudbury Secondary School. Tickets, at $10 for adults/seniors and $5 for students/children, are available at the participating schools and at the door.
Sudbury Secondary School’s visual art students will display their creativity and artistic talents during the upcoming Exposed exhibit in the Sudbury Secondary School library during Education Week. The show will be open to the public on Tuesday, May 4th, 2010 from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm. The exhibit will remain on display for students on Wednesday, May 5th and Thursday, May 6th. This year’s exhibition includes photography, drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, installation and performance art. There will also be a range of designs from two fashion classes. The opening will feature musical talent from Sudbury Secondary School as well as refreshments. Sudbury Secondary School is located at 85 Mackenzie Street in Sudbury.

On Monday, May 3rd, A.B. Ellis Public School will kick off the week by celebrating Music Monday with a free Zumba class at 1:45 pm in the gym with an instructor from Goodlife Fitness. Parents are welcome. A. B. Ellis will also host a Book Fair in the library all day for students and parents.
The Book Fair will continue in the library on Tuesday, May 4th, for parents and members of the community to browse and select books they would like to purchase. The Book Fair will continue on Wednesday, May 5th and orders will be taken on this date.
On Thursday, May 6th, the community is welcome to join A.B. Ellis Public School for the grand opening of the Parent Resource Centre at 5 pm. The school will showcase the various resources recently purchased with a School Council Parents Reaching Out grant in the library. Following this, there will be a free Community Family Fun Night. This will be a wonderful interactive activity for parents and children. Pizza and beverages will be offered beginning at 5:30 pm. Absolute Entertainment will provide entertainment from 6 pm to 7 pm in the school gym.
On Monday, May 10th, A.B. Ellis will host a music presentation called FIDDLEFIRE, for students in JK to Grade 6 and all interested parents at 9:30 am in the gymnasium. Violin sensation Chris McCool will get children and families dancing, clapping, laughing and singing songs. Children and their parents scat-sing, become a rhythm section, and join Chris McCool on stage to play rare percussion instruments from around the world. The presentation brings a new level of understanding of our global connection to forests, air, water, and animals.

Adamsdale Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 3rd from 10 am to 10:50 am in the school gym. Students will hear guitar performances from the Guitar Club, sing with various classes and be entertained by Nickel City Sound.
Adamsdale Public School will host its first "Cuddle Up and Read" on Wednesday, May 5th from noon to 1 pm. Students and family members will come together to read books from school or from home. There will be a focus on effective literacy skills and a light snack will be provided.
On Thursday, May 6th from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, new JK students and their families are invited to Adamsdale’s annual Welcome to Kindergarten evening. Parents and children will enjoy story reading, letter and number activities, and play dough and cutting activities. They will also receive a complimentary goody bag to help them practice these skills at home. (Parents of new registrants are asked to call 566-6020 for more information or to confirm attendance).
On Friday, May 7th, the Grade 4 class will enjoy a Medieval Feast as they wrap up a unit on Medieval Times.

The production, which focuses on nutrition, features vocalizing vegetables along with a big helping of other edible characters. The performance will take place on Thursday, May 6th at 9:30 am. Parents are welcome to attend. Classes will also host a number of student presentations for parents to attend throughout the week.

On Tuesday, May 4th, Assiginack Public School will host a Math Night from 6 pm to 8 pm. Guest speaker Nelson Wood will examine how and why the Math curriculum has changed over the past five years and provide Math websites and other resources that will help parents with the new Math focus on problem solving. He will also draw links between the Math curriculum and Math board games. A question and answer session will follow. Also as part of the evening, staff and students will have several Math board games set up in the gym and senior students will lead board game sessions with teacher support. Everyone is invited to attend, including JK parents who are new to the school.

On Friday, May 7th, Assiginack Public School will participate in a Pitch-in to clean up the Manitowaning community, weather permitting.

Parents will have an opportunity to get a behind the scenes look at students as they rehearse for both presentations.
Also on Wednesday, May 5th, Churchill students will participate in a Transitions Day at Cambrian College. Grade 7 and 8 students who have Transition Plans will visit Cambrian College to learn about assistive technologies available to them.

On Friday, May 7th from 5 pm to 7 pm, Central Manitoulin Public School will host its second annual Summer Breeze Carnival. Families are invited to come out for a night of fun, food and laughter. During Education week, Artist Michael Cywink will work with budding artists on a mural that encompasses various character traits such as respect and kindness. The mural will be unveiled the evening of the Summer Breeze Carnival on Friday, May 7th at 6 pm.

On Wednesday, April 28th, Aubrey Davis, author of award winning children’s books, kicked off Education Week with workshops for students from Grades 1 to 6.
During Education Week, the Chelmsford Public School Book Fair will be open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Tuesday, May 4th and from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 5th. The book fair will also be open for 30 minutes following the evening Talent Show on Wednesday, May 5th.
Chelmsford Public School community families are invited to join the school for a pizza supper on Wednesday, May 5th from 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm to enjoy conversation and time to look at the children’s art work in the gym (sponsored by Chelmsford Public School School Council and Staff).
On Wednesday, May 5th, the Celebration of Music and Movement Show will feature the many talents of the students, including a classroom art gallery. Performances take place at 1:30 pm and 6:30 pm in the gym.
Everyone is welcome to cheer on the Chelmsford Public School Co-ed Junior Basketball team competing in the finals at Northeastern Elementary School during the day on Thursday, May 6th and after school on Friday, May 7th.

The Copper Cliff Public School Book Fair began on Thursday, April 29th. Parents will have a chance to purchase books on Friday, April 30th and Monday, May 3rd when the Music Monday concert takes place in the gym at 11:30 am.
Throughout Education Week, the school will feature student writing in the form of poetry. Several pieces of poetry will be read during daily announcements.
The Battle of the Books team will attend a Mini-Competition at Walden Public School on Tuesday, May 4th from 9 am to noon. They will compete against several schools in preparation for the main event at the Radisson Hotel later in May.
Wednesday, May 5th is Movin’ On Up Day at Copper Cliff Public School. Students will spend part of the day in next year’s class. They will follow the same schedule and routines to get a feel for their upcoming school year.
Also on Wednesday, May 5th, the Senior Kindergarten class will host a Mother’s Day Tea from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
Students will showcase their Math skills on Thursday, May 6th during Math Morning Game activities. Students in each class will complete fun and challenging Math games.
Also on Thursday, May 6th, the annual “Welcome to Kindergarten” open house will take place in the Hub from 1 pm to 2 pm. The annual student vs teacher volleyball game will take place at 2 pm.
Friday, May 7th is Pyjama Day at Copper Cliff Public School! The day will kick off with Reading Buddies in the gym. Parents and members of the Copper Cliff community are invited to join students and pair up for reading. The Lively and MacLeod Public School bands will entertain students in the gym at 2 pm.

C.R. Judd students will prepare bookmarks, placemats and coffee trays for distribution throughout the community (at local restaurants and the public library) during Education Week. For example, students will paint cardboard coffee trays to reflect this year’s Education Week theme and environmental stewardship. The trays will be for sale ($1 each) at the Country Style outlet in Capreol and M & R Grill. Money raised will be donated to the Capreol Bread and Roses Food Bank.

Cyril Varney Public School has a number of activities planned for Education week. All students will create a Whole Story. Throughout the week, each class will add a page to the story, resulting in a complete story by the school. The Whole Story will be read on Friday, May 7th.
Students will participate in Music Monday on May 3rd, with the choir performing at St. Andrew’s and hosting an evening concert.
On Tuesday, May 4th, students will present a fundraiser for Copper Cliff called “Let’s stick together”. Students will be allowed to chew gum in a controlled environment, with proceeds donated to families affected by the fire. Also on Tuesday, the school will host guest speakers who will share career information. A JK information session will be held from 6 pm to 7 pm.
On Wednesday, May 5th, there will be Premiere technology workshops for parents of Primary students from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm and Junior students from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. The school will host a lunch with parents in the gym from 12:45 pm to 1:15 pm.

Students will also create re-adapted fairytales in groups and present them during their Roots of Empathy visit on Thursday, May 6th.

Education Week at Markstay Public School kicks off on Monday, May 3rd with Music Monday, an annual event showcasing the many musical and dramatic talents of students. Markstay students will share their love of the arts in front of their peers, staff and visiting family members in the gym at 1 pm. Before and after the show, students from Grade 8 will host a bake sale with proceeds going towards this year’s graduation ceremony.
On Friday, May 7th, Markstay Public School will open its doors to community organizations with expertise in the area of exceptionalities at the 5th Annual Exceptional Students Awareness Day from 10 am to 2 pm. Students will attend a variety of workshops emphasizing the importance of an inclusive school environment where every person counts. Markstay Public School prides itself on supporting all of its rising stars, making the school a great place to be. Spearheaded by two Educational Assistants at Markstay Public School, this school-wide event will serve as a reminder to all students that what makes us special is our differences. Organizations participating in the day include the Ontario Paraplegic Society, the Social Planning Council, and others. There will also be presentations on autism and hearing loss.

The school is promoting healthy living by encouraging regular exercise and healthy eating. This comic opera will provide an exciting culminating event for students.
During the evening on Tuesday, May 4th, students and their families are invited to a buffet dinner and to enjoy the educational and interactive stories of “Patches the Clown” in the school gymnasium. The themes will centre around bullying on the playground and also the use of good manners. This event is being provided by the Aboriginal Hub of Better Beginnings Better Futures .
On the morning of Wednesday, May 5th, Grade 5 students will visit City Hall.

On Monday, May 3rd, at 9 am, Beattie students and staff will celebrate the importance of music with a school-wide Music Monday assembly. The Intermediate Band and various classes will showcase their musical talents.
On Tuesday, May 4th in the afternoon, as well as all day on Wednesday, May 5th, the school will host a Scholastic Book Fair.
On Wednesday, May 5th, teachers of primary classes will host a Read With Me activity from 11 am to 11:40 am. Parents/grandparents/child caregivers, etc. are invited to come in, cozy up, and share their favourite books with the children.
On Thursday, May 6th, SK classes will have parents come in to spend time with their children at the Reading Picnic/Booknique.
Throughout the week, one of the Grade 1 classes has invited parents to come in to speak with the students about their various professions as part of their community workers unit in Social Studies.
Parents from one of the Grade 2 classes will be “guest teachers”. They will share their talents with lessons in science and visual arts as well as speak to students about the journey of becoming Canadian citizens.

Education Week at S. Geiger Public School will begin on Monday, May 3rd with a Gambling Presentation for Grades 2 to 8 presented by YMCA. The purpose of this presentation is to raise awareness about gambling issues among youth and to provide advice on how to stay safe.
On Tuesday, May 4th, Terry Howell will host an Aikido demonstration for the school. The demonstration will provide an introduction to this style of Martial Arts and promote physical activity. Parents are welcome to attend the demonstration in the gym at 12:25 pm.
S. Geiger Public School will host its annual Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Wednesday, May 5th from 5 pm to 6 pm. School community partners have teamed up with the S. Geiger staff to share resources and experiences with pre-school children to begin their formal education with a foundation in literacy nurtured in the home. All children will receive a Welcome to Kindergarten bag filled with resources and have an opportunity to meet staff and friends.
Grades 7 and 8 students will attend the Trades/Career Day being presented by Espanola High School the morning of Wednesday, May 5th.
On Thursday, May 6th, the S. Geiger choir and percussion ensemble will travel to Espanola to visit the hospital and the seniors home to share their musical talents.
On Friday, May 7th, selected students in Grades 4 to 8 will participate in the Heritage Fair at Laurentian University.

Walden Public School will host a Battle of the Books tournament in the gym on Tuesday, May 4th.
On Wednesday, May 5th, the school will host the "Get Stuffed!" comic opera in the gym for students to learn about healthy food choices. The production features vocalizing vegetables along with a big helping of other opinionated edible characters, all competing to influence Zach’s daily diet.
On Friday, May 7th, students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart. Classes will visit the art gallery.

Students will launch Education Week by participating in Music Monday.
Westmount Public School will host a Family Fun Fair on Thursday, May 6th.
The teachers at Westmount Public School have invited parents into their classrooms for a Smart Board activity involving Literacy or Math.
Other classes will engage parents in interactive Math activities and Art activities involving plants and nature. Some classes will visit the Art Gallery to further hone their artistic skills.
