What’s happening in Rainbow Schools?

From Greater Sudbury to El Salvador

Staff and students from Confederation Secondary School recently shipped school supplies and clothing to children in an orphanage in El Salvador, including teacher Jennifer Stobo, left, and Grade 10 students Sydney Boivin and Matthew St. Jean. Students visited the orphanage when they built homes as part of a Habitat for Humanity project during the March break.

The excursion gave students an opportunity to see how others live and, in the process, gain a renewed sense of appreciation for what they have here at home. "This was a highly rewarding experience for everyone who participated," said teacher Jennifer Stobo. "We know the school supplies and clothing that were recently shipped are much-needed and will certainly be well received."

“Character development is an important component of what we teach in Rainbow Schools,” said Confederation Secondary School Principal Mike Mirka. “Character development is all about instilling strong values in young people and building responsible and respectful citizens who care about the world in which they live. It is certainly very gratifying to see our young people make a difference on a global level.”

This was the second Habitat for Humanity project for Confederation Secondary School. A team helped to build houses in Chile during March Break 2008.
