Aboriginal Youth Leaders create public service announcements about poverty

Students from Rainbow District School Board’s Aboriginal Youth Leadership Group will produce public service announcements to highlight the issue of poverty from Friday, October 29th to Monday, November 1st, 2010.

The intensive workshop, being presented by Redcloud Studios Inc., is designed to engage youth in dialogue and use video to address issues affecting youth and the community.

Students will create, write and produce eight public service announcements. In the process, they will strengthen their communication and leadership skills and build self-esteem.

Students will showcase their productions on Monday, November 1st, 2010 from 2 pm to 4 pm in the Council Chambers at Tom Davies Square. The screenings will be followed by a question and answer session.

The public service announcements will be shared by youth within their own communities and classrooms as a tool to engage other youth and start a dialogue.

The Aboriginal Youth Leadership Group has been together for the last three years. The Youth Group is giving students a voice. They are also developing skills to lead projects and activities in their schools and/or their communities.

The workshop is being led by Jennifer Podemski, CEO of Redcloud Studios Inc., and her team of mentors, including award winning hip hop artist Plex, actor Sarah Podemski (Cashing In, Manson, Moccasin Flats), and other professionals who are committed to empowering Aboriginal youth.

The Aboriginal mentors will inspire youth to harness their own potential and provide information about Aboriginal participation in the media and bridging the cultural divide.
