Canadian Guitar Quartet headlines Guitars Alive on April 9th

Sudbury’s 9th annual Guitars Alive will take place on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 7:30 pm in the Sheridan Auditorium at Sudbury Secondary School, 85 Mackenzie Street. In addition to showcasing top local guitar ensembles from the community, this year’s event will feature the internationally renowned Canadian Guitar Quartet.

General admission is $20 for adults and $15 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at Black Cat, Guitar Clinic, Jett Landry Music, Dupont’s Guitar Shop, Cambrian College Bookstore, Cosmic Dave’s Guitar Emporium, Sudbury Secondary School box office and at the door. All proceeds from Guitars Alive ticket sales will go towards scholarships, bursaries and educational materials for Sudbury guitar students as well as the Sudbury Kiwanis Music Festival.

Guitars Alive will kick off with guitar ensembles from Chelmsford Public School, Levack Public School and Lasalle Secondary School. The show will continue with the Cambrian College Classical Guitar Ensemble and Laurentian University Jazz Guitar Ensemble. Also being featured this year is Jamie Dupuis, a Cambrian College student who won the Los Angeles Guitar Institute Competition. The Canadian Guitar Quartet will take to the stage for a one-hour set following the intermission.

Classical Guitar Magazine hailed the Canadian Guitar Quartet’s New York City debut as "fantastic, spirited playing and sheer inventiveness.”  The Canadian Guitar Quartet has toured extensively in Europe as well as North, Central and South America. They have gone from one standing ovation to the next, establishing a reputation as one of the finest guitar ensembles in the world. The Canadian Guitar Quartet’s second CD was named instrumental album of the year in 2005. Their just released third CD is also getting rave reviews.

A favourite at festivals, the Canadian Guitar Quartet has headlined everywhere from Entre Cuerdas (Chile), Neuötting (Germany), Ramon Noble (Mexico), Yale University’s Guitar Extravaganza (USA), and the Guitar Foundation of America to Parry Sound’s Festival of the Sound, Festival Vancouver, Hornby Island Festival, the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival and many others.

The Canadian Guitar Quartet has been featured on a national Bravo TV special. Les Productions d’Oz publishes the special "CGQ Collection" distributing CGQ original music and transcriptions world-wide. According to Guitar Magazine, Italy, "The Canadian Guitar Quartet tackles all with great brilliance and an optimal mastery of their instruments … thereby confirming a secure musical reality of international dimension."
