Rainbow Schools celebrate Earth Day 2011
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
A.B. Ellis Public School
A.B. Ellis Public School has been awarded a $1,000 grant from the Green Apple School Program. This money will be used to start a community garden in partnership with a variety of local organizations. The One Tot Stop Daycare, housed at A.B. Ellis Public School, will tend the garden during the summer.
A.B. Ellis Public School will host an Earth Day Play Day on Wednesday, April 20th with workshops on food choices and organic farming, wildlife biology, Northern Ontario aquaculture, reintroduction of trout into golf course ponds, outdoor recreation and canoe tripping, and Domtar quality control. Primary children will paint a Canadian Tire reusable bag, view the movie “The Lorax”; and see a demonstration on how stuffed animals are made from recycled materials. Students will also take part in a number of Play Day activities, including a recycling relay, Earth Day eco feud jeopardy game, conservation charades and a nature scavenger hunt.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale Public School will host a community clean up on Earth Day on the school grounds and in the immediate school neighbourhood. Litterless lunches will be promoted throughout the entire week.
Alexander Public School
Alexander Public School will celebrate Earth day on Thursday, April 21st with several activities. Staff and students will minimize energy use by turning off non-essential lights and computers. The school will host a garbage-free day, inviting students to use recyclable containers for their lunches, bring their own garbage home and reduce the amount of garbage they produce. The day will end with a community and school yard clean-up.
Algonquin Road Public School
Throughout the week, the Grade 7 class will test their Science and Technology Design Challenge products. The products must mimic an environmentally friendly temperature management system found in nature. Products include laptop cooling stands, insulated clothing, dual use wooden containers, and insulated bottle bags. The products must address heat transfer by radiation, conduction and convection. In addition, 90 per cent of the materials used must be renewable, recyclable and reclaimed (diverted from landfill).
The Grade 2/3 and Grade 6 classes will clean up the school yard.
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will host an e-waste recycling event for the community. Citizens are invited to drop off their old computers, telephones, televisions and other electronics at the school on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 9 am to 3 pm. Carl A. Nesbitt Public School is located at 1241 Roy Street in New Sudbury.
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will host litterless lunches with prizes. There will be morning announcements with an Earth Day tip of the day. In the morning of Thursday, April 21st, Al Gore’s film on climate change will be presented in the gym for the entire school. In the afternoon, Grade 4 students will participate in a neighbourhood clean-up. Students will collect old batteries to be disposed of in an earth friendly way. Perennials will be planted in the school yard later this spring.
Central Manitoulin Public School
During the morning on Wednesday, April 20th, the entire school will participate in environmental activities and workshops in Wagg’s Park. In the afternoon, Central Manitoulin Public School will host its Annual Community Clean Up in Mindemoya.
C.R. Judd Public School
On Thursday, April 21st, primary and junior students at C.R. Judd Public School will remove debris from the schoolyard and the front of the street. On Friday, May 6th, students in Grades 7 and 8 will join with the local Lions Club to clean debris along several roadways in Capreol. Both are annual Earth Day events.
Chelmsford Public School
Chelmsford Public School students will participate in a school yard / school community clean up for Earth Day on Thursday, April 21st at 1:30 pm. Grade 6 students will plant a shade tree.
Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will highlight sustainability in different ways during Earth Day week. Students will be encouraged to pack a garbageless lunch on Thursday, April 21st and will participate in an annual neighbourhood clean-up. Inspired by the efforts of Wembley Public School, the Copper Cliff "Me to We" Club has invited all students to participate in a "Toy Drive for Earth". During the week, students will be encouraged to bring in gently used toys they no longer need. On Thursday, April 21st, students who participate will have an opportunity to take home a recycled toy that’s new to them.
Cyril Varney Public School
Throughout the week, Cyril Varney Public School’s Go Green Team will air earth friendly announcements. The week will begin with Lights Out! Monday and Trashless Tuesday. A school assembly will be held on Wednesday, which is “Wear Green and Brown Day”. There will be a presentation on sustainability and each student will receive a sapling. The week will culminate on Thursday with a litterless lunch and clean-up of the school yard and community park. Grade 1 and 2 students will plant seeds or bulbs. Students have also been invited to participate in a newsletter writing challenge by answering the following question – How will YOU make a difference this Earth Day?
Ernie Checkeris Public School
The entire school will travel to Science North to see the new 3D Imax film, Born to be Wild. This heart-warming tale follows vulnerable and irresistibly lovable baby orangutans and elephants that have lost their families and must rely on the kindness and dedication of extraordinary individuals who lead them on a truly amazing journey from rescue and rehabilitation to their triumphant release into the wild. This is an inspiring look at family, friendship, compassion and the place where human kindness intersects with the animal kingdom. Students will be invited to bring a litterless lunch on this day.
Lansdowne Public School
Lansdowne Public School is celebrating Earth Day on Thursday, April 21st. Staff and students will participate in a litterless lunch. The Go Green Club will prepare announcements throughout the week to promote energy conservation.
Levack Public School
On Thursday, April 21st, Levack Public School staff and students will spread out across the community and clean up. The primary and junior classes will concentrate on areas near the school yard while intermediate students will walk out as far as Onaping Falls to pick up garbage along walkways and ditches.
Long Lake Public School
The students will celebrate Earth Day throughout the week. Highlights include a book exchange on Wednesday, April 20th where students have a chance to recycle old favourites. On Thursday, April 21st, the Grade 5/6 students will learn about the environment at Dynamic Earth.
MacLeod Public School
MacLeod Public School will view sections of the EARTH DVD throughout the day on Friday, April 15th. In addition, the Roots and Shoots Club is encouraging students to wear green and blue on Thursday, April 21st and bring a garbageless lunch to celebrate Earth Day.
Northeastern Elementary School
On Tuesday, April 26th, staff and students at Northeastern Elementary School will take part in Clean Up Canada Week. Northeastern Cougars will be hard at work cleaning up the school yard and the surrounding community.
Queen Elizabeth Public School
Students at Queen Elizabeth Public School will host a community clean up on Wednesday, April 20th from 11:45 am to 1 pm. Students from Grades 4 to 6 and the Early Learning Program class will participate. On Thursday, April 21st, students will participate in Litterless Lunch Day.
Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School students will celebrate Earth Day by digging in and getting their hands dirty…Literally! On Thursday, April 21st, students will participate in a community clean up. Students will also show their support for Earth Day by wearing green and packing a litterless lunch. In addition, the Grade 3/4 and Intensive Support Program students will sow seeds in containers to grow trees in their classrooms that will later be planted in the school yard. Students will care for the maple trees planted in the school yard last spring. Flowers will be planted later in May. Markstay students look forward to doing their part to beautify the playground while making the community a little cleaner and greener.
M.W. Moore Public School
On Wednesday, April 20th, M.W. Moore Public School will host a school yard clean-up from 10:30 am to 11:30 am. There will be a school and community presentation on planning for a tree and garden planting project from 1 pm to 2:10 pm.
Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will host an Earth Day community clean up on Thursday, April 21st. The school is raising funds during April to support Operation Migration to save whooping cranes. Hats for Whoopers is held on Fridays. Children bring in $1 to wear a hat for the cause. Many classes will begin renewing the existing vegetable gardens, under the leadership of parent Brenda Peacock. The school will host a Volunteer Breakfast with a green theme (Volunteers: The Roots of Our Community) on Thursday, April 28th at 8 am.
R. H. Murray Public School
On Tuesday, April 19th, R. H. Murray Public School will participate in a community clean-up of Whitefish. Students will also celebrate Earth Day through arts, activities and presentations by community partners.
S. Geiger Public School
S. Geiger Public School will celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 21st. Students have been encouraged to bring in a gently used book to participate in a book swap. Students will have the opportunity to select a "new" book. In the process, they will learn that items can be reused. Students and staff will also participate in a school yard clean up.
Valley View Public School
Students, teachers and parents at Valley View Public School, the Rainbow District School Board’s first green school, will, once again, plant 100 trees in their beautiful school yard. This will take place the week of April 18th. The school will also collect old batteries. Administration and staff will invite students to participate in litterless lunches throughout the week.
Walden Public School
Walden Public School, the Rainbow District School Board’s second green school, will celebrate Earth Day by hosting a Conservation Fair on Thursday, April 21st from noon to 2 pm in the gymnasium. Grade 5 and 6 students have been working on projects with a focus on the environment. The community is invited to the school to see some of the great research projects and green inventions.
Webbwood Public School
Webbwood Public School will celebrate Earth Day on Thursday, April 21st. Throughout the day, students and staff will participate in a school yard clean up and bring a litterless lunch to school.
Westmount Public School
To celebrate Earth Day, students at Westmount Public School will work on recycled art, plant seeds in the garden, discuss the importance of recycling and adapt new lifestyle changes to help the environment.
SECONDARY SCHOOLS
Espanola High School
Espanola High School will host its Annual Community Clean Up in partnership with Tim Hortons on Thursday, April 21st at 10 am.
Lasalle Secondary School
Lasalle Secondary School will celebrate Earth Day throughout the week with Wear Brown on Tuesday, Blue on Wednesday and Green on Thursday. Staff will be encouraged not to use new paper or make photocopies on Thursday. Students will participate in a School Yard Clean Up (Wednesday or Thursday). On Thursday, lights will be turned off in classrooms and there will be a meatless lunch in the cafeteria. Environmental announcements will be read all week. In homerooms, there will be a collection towards flowers to beautify the school yard.
Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School will host an e-waste recycling event for the community. Citizens are invited to drop off their old computers, telephones, televisions and other electronics at the school on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 9 am to 3 pm. Lively District Secondary School is located at 265 Fifth Avenue in Lively.
The Roots and Shoots Team at Lively District Secondary School will complete its Eco-Schools application throughout April. This includes energy audits and waste audits as well as the promotion of energy and environmental savings practices through announcements.
During the afternoon on Thursday, April 21st, Lively District Secondary School will host a school-wide Earth Day clean up of the Lively community. Students will sign up individually through the Sudbury Volunteer Network "Change the World" or teachers may bring their whole class to participate. Students will walk to specific locations for the clean up. The school may also team up with Walden CAN network volunteers to connect students with community partners. For their efforts, students will receive certificates of completion from Change the World and community service hours.
Lockerby Composite School
Lockerby Composite School will host an e-waste recycling event for the community. Citizens are invited to drop off their old computers, telephones, televisions and other electronics at the school on Saturday, April 16, 2011 from 9 am to 3 pm. Lockerby Composite School is located at 1391 Ramsey View Road in Sudbury.
Manitoulin Secondary School
Manitoulin Secondary School hosted a successful e-waste event for the community on Saturday, April 9th. Old computers and electronics were gathered and shipped to Greentec for recycling.
Also for Earth Day, the school will host a green bucks for books exchange, will cleanup litter in the school yard and nearby roadways, and will present various announcements with enviro cool facts. There will also be a display in the foyer to illustrate the paper recycling that gets done in one week with other quick ‘did you know’ posters.
