This year’s theme for Education Week is "Learning Together, Succeeding Together / Tous ensemble pour apprendre et réussir.”
“Education Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Director of Education Norm Blaseg.
ELEMENTARY
A.B. Ellis Public School
A.B. Ellis Public School will host a Book Fair for parents and students on Tuesday, May 3 and Wednesday, May 4 during the day. This will promote literacy and a love of reading. Proceeds will help to build class library collections.
There will be a Drumming Concert on Wednesday, May 4 by students with special needs in the Espanola area from 1:30 pm to 2:40 pm in the gymnasium. All community members are welcome to attend.
On Friday, May 6th, A.B. Ellis Public School will host a Young Authors’ Conference. Every student in the school will have at least one published book to share. Parents and community members are encouraged to come and listen to students read the books that they have written and illustrated.
Adamsdale Public School
Adamsdale staff and students will celebrate Music Monday on May 2 from 9:50 am to 10:50 am with a variety of song, dance and magic performances by students. Staff and students will join together to sing the Music Monday theme song – Tomorrow is Coming by Luke Doucet. Parents and guests are welcome.
Adamsdale will host its Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session for JK students starting school this fall from 2 pm to 3 pm on Tuesday, May 3. Parents and students new to Kindergarten will participate in early learning activities and tour Adamsdale Public School.
Wednesday, May 4th is Autism Awareness Day at Adamsdale Public School. Students and staff will wear a hat to show their support. Information will be available in the school about autism and resources in the community.
Alexander Public School
On Thursday, May 5, 2011, Alexander Public School will welcome parents to its Literacy Night. From 9 am to 6 pm, there will be a bilingual book fair and readers café in the gymnasium. Also in the gym, the junior intermediate writers gallery will take place until 7 pm. Parents will have an opportunity to see the writing process at each stage of development and have conversations with teachers about how to support effective writing beyond the classroom. From 6 pm to 7 pm, the primary division will host a series of short workshops to engage parents. Parents will learn how young writers develop their skills. They will also receive great tips to take home to help their children succeed.
Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School is performing the original broadway score of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat on Wednesday, May 4th and Thursday, May 5th at 6:30 pm at the school. The musical will feature symphony software that will provide orchestral accompaniment. To share its love of the arts, Assiginack Public School will also present a matinée on Thursday, May 5th at 11:30 am at no cost to students from C.C. McLean Public School, Lakeview School, Little Current Public School, Central Manitoulin Public School, Pontiac School and Wiky Junior School. The entire student body at Assiginack Public School is in the musical, supported by several parents and community members. Tickets are $7 and are available by calling Manuela Elliott at 705-368-7010.
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
On Music Monday on May 2nd, Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will host an Outdoor Concert at 12:30 pm. Music students will perform for the entire school. Also on Monday, Grade 6 classes will perform interpretive dances at Sudbury Secondary School from 7 pm to 9 pm, as part of the Character Education Through the Arts initiative.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, Nesbitt Public School will host Conversational French for parents/guardians and families of Carl A. Nesbitt Public School and Ernie Checkeris Public School. This event will take place at Nesbitt (Room 709) from 6:30 pm to 8 pm.
The Grade 7/8 enriched math class will take part in the W. S. Hogg Math Competition, sponsored by Algoma University, on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 from 9:30 am to 11 am.
Charles C. McLean Public School
Warrant Officer David Wilkinson of the Royal Canadian Regiment from Petawawa will visit the Grade 6, 7 and 8 classes at Charles C. McLean Public School on Monday, May 2nd. He will make a presentation on his recent tour of Afghanistan and meet the students who provided letters, cards, and boxes of treats to troops who were at the Forward Operating Bases outside of Kandahar in 2010. Classes at C.C. McLean have been corresponding with members of the Canadian Forces since 2006. This is the first opportunity they will have to meet one of the soldiers they provided support to over the years. WO Wilkinson accepted this invitation in order to thank the students for their support, and to help them continue to learn about the work of the Canadian Forces throughout the world.
Parents and community members are invited to C.C. McLean’s Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 4th at 7 pm. Those unable to attend the evening performance are welcome to the dress rehearsal, which begins at 12:45 pm on Wednesday, May 4th. All students from JK to Grade 8 will participate. Primary students are performing the musical "Bugz". Junior/Intermediate students will perform songs highlighting the "History of Rock and Roll".
Grade 7/8 students will attend Artastic Fusion at Manitoulin Secondary School on Friday, May 6th. A total of 21 Grade 8 students created visual submissions for the Art Show. Students will tour the exhibit, take part in demonstrations and participate in the "Blitz Drawing Project".
Chelmsford Public School
On Monday, May 2nd, students in Grade 1 to 5 will reduce their carbon footprint by cleaning up the schoolyard. Grade 6 students will garden and plant trees to kick off Education Week.
During Education Week, the Chelmsford Public School Book Fair will be open from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm on Tuesday, May 3rd and from 8:30 am to 3:30 pm and 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, May 4th. The book fair will also be open for 30 minutes following the evening Talent Show on Wednesday, May 4th.
Chelmsford Public School community families are invited to enjoy conversation, tour the Book Fair and take time to look at the children’s art work in the gym on Wednesday, May 4th from 5:45 pm to 6:30 pm.
On Wednesday, May 4th, the Celebration of Music and Movement Show will feature the many talents of the students, including a classroom art gallery. Performances will take place in the gym at 11:30 am and 6:30 pm.
Chelmsford Public School invites family and community members to make donations of non-perishable food items for admission to all events during Education Week.
Churchill Public School
Churchill Public School will present the musical "Annie" throughout Education Week. There will be a dress rehearsal on Tuesday, May 3rd, 2011 at 11 am. Performances will take place on Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 and Thursday, May 5th, 2011 at 11 am and 6 pm. A final performance will take place on Friday, May 6th, 2011 at 11 am.
Central Manitoulin Public School
Central Manitoulin Public School will host a ballet performance on Tuesday, May 3 in the gymnasium at 9:30 am.
Students will participate in Junior Achievement workshops throughout the week.
Central Manitoulin Public School will present the musical Annie Jr. at the Mindemoya Community Hall at 7 pm on Tuesday, May 3rd and Wednesday, May 4th.
Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will kick off Education Week with a Welcome to Kindergarten evening. Parents and new JK students are invited to attend the WTK orientation session on Monday, May 2nd from 6 pm to 7 pm in the school gym.
On Tuesday, May 3rd from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm, Copper Cliff Public School will showcase students at its annual Talent Show. Parents and families are welcome. On Thursday, May 5th at 6:30 pm, Copper Cliff Public School will offer a free JK to 6 "Sweet Deals" workshop in partnership with Frontier College. Parents and children will learn fun and exciting math and literacy games. Pre-registration is required. Please contact the school at 705-682-4721.
Cyril Varney Public School
On Monday, May 2nd and Tuesday, May 3rd, Cyril Varney Public School will host a Book Fair in the library from 9 am to 2 pm. Parents and students are invited to attend. During the afternoon of Monday, May 2nd, parents and guardians are invited to join students in their classrooms for math games. No experience is required, however, enthusiasm and a competitive spirit are assets.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, Varney students from Senior Kindergarten to Grade 2 will visit the New Sudbury Public Library for a story time and to learn about the Library’s Children’s Collections from 9:15 am to 11 am. Students in Grade 6 will attend a dress rehearsal of "Annie" at Churchill Public School. In the afternoon, children in Grade 3 will participate in the Public Library’s Museum in a Suitcase program and learn about pioneer farming methods. In the evening, from 6 pm to 7:30 pm, Cyril Varney Public School will host its annual Welcome to Kindergarten night. All families are invited to attend.
On the morning of Wednesday, May 4th, staff and students from Lasalle Secondary School will visit Cyril Varney to host a basketball skills workshop for students in Grade 5 and 6. In the afternoon, a Celebration of Aboriginal Culture will occur throughout various classrooms in the school. Parents and community members are welcome to join the celebration.
On Thursday, May 5th, Cyril Varney students invite family and community members to visit the school gymnasium for an exhibition of student art work. At 1:30 pm, students in Grade 2 and Grade 6 and local media representatives will participate in a math challenge using Smart Boards. At 6:30 pm, Varney will host a Family Dance for students and their families.
On Friday, May 6th, from 9 am to 10 am, Varney will hold a Literacy Hour. Students will demonstrate the skills they have gained in reading. Family and community members have been invited to join the Literacy Hour to listen to a child read. Beginning at noon, Education Week at Cyril Varney Public School will culminate with the Student of the Month Awards Ceremony, the sharing of a student written School Wide Story, and a teacher versus students volleyball game.
Gatchell School
Gatchell School has a number of activities planned to celebrate Education Week. On Monday, May 2nd, students will kick off the celebration by participating in Music Monday activities. At 10:45 am, olympic athlete Jared MacLeod will speak to the students about teamwork, sportsmanship and goal setting.
On Wednesday, May 4th, family members are invited to take part in a reading picnic with their children at 1 pm. The school’s skillful bakers will prepare cookies for the event.
On Friday, May 6th, the students will again be showing off their cooking talents by hosting a special breakfast for their parents, beginning at 9 am.
Lansdowne Public School
On Monday, May 2nd, Lansdowne Public School students will participate in music workshops for Music Monday.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, students and family members will "Curl Up and Read" a good book together at school from 1:45 pm to 2:45 pm.
On Wednesday, May 4th, School Council and Lansdowne staff will host a Family Night from 5:30 pm to 7 pm with a focus on “Partners in our Community”. A light meal will be served from 5:30 pm to 6 pm. Families will then participate in a variety of interactive workshops where they will learn about different groups and organizations within the community.
On Thursday, May 5th, students will engage in a series of educational stations in cross grade teams.
Education Week at Lansdowne Public School will culminate on Friday, May 6th, with students in Grades 4 to 6 participating in the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair at Laurentian University.
Larchwood Public School
Students, staff and School Council have organized a number of Education Week events to showcase student achievement at Larchwood Public School. Everyone is welcome.
Education Week will kick off on Monday, May 2nd at 9 am with a Music Monday assembly in the gym.
On Thursday, May 5th, "Larchwood’s Got Talent" will begin at 11:15 am. Students will sing, dance and play guitar and drums. This is a much-anticipated event by all community members.
A spring Book Fair will take place in the Larchwood Public School library throughout Education Week. Parents and community members are invited to visit the school to purchase books. All proceeds from the book fair will go towards enhancing the classroom libraries. In addition, the School Council will be releasing support material for the at home reading program.
Markstay Public School
Markstay Public School will host a variety of school events for Education Week.
On Monday, May 2nd, students will showcase their talent as part of Music Monday, which celebrates the importance of music education. Students will participate in a Talent Show in the school gymnasium at 1pm. This special event will feature different groups and individuals singing and performing live. All parents and family members are welcome to attend.
On Thursday, May 5th, Markstay will welcome a lively group of future JK students to the classroom as part of a Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session. Parents of children four years of age by December 31, 2011 are invited to the school from 11:30 am to 12:45 pm for fun activities and information sharing. Future JK students will leave with a bag of supplies and resources designed to help prepare them for their first year of school.
On Thursday, May 5th, Markstay Public School will celebrate its third annual “Family Math Night” from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Parents, students and teachers will take part in five fun, hands-on activities, as they explore each of the strands and share in the learning. Dinner will be served.
The Scholastic Book Fair will take place throughout Education Week. Books will be for sale during Math Night on May 5th.
Monetville Public School
Monetville Public School will host its 7th Annual Monetville Idol concert to celebrate "Music Monday" on Monday, May 2, 2011 at 1:30 pm. All are welcome to attend. Admission is $1 with all proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross Japan Earthquake/Asia-Pacific Tsunami Relief Effort. Local artist and special guest, Derek "Bud" Restoule, will also perform.
Northeastern Elementary School
Northeastern Elementary School will host its first Exceptional Students Awareness Day on Tuesday, May 3rd from 9:30 am to 3 pm. Students will attend a variety of workshops that will help the school community make every student count and support their rising stars. Parents and community members are welcome to join the students in learning more about specific challenges including autism spectrum disorder, physical disabilities, learning disabilities, vision and hearing impairments, and brain injuries.
On Thursday, May 5th, parents and students are invited to enjoy an evening of games and delicious snacks at the annual Spring Fun Fair. Fun Fair activities will begin at 5 pm in the school cafeteria with food and ticket sales. The real fun begins at 5:30 pm. Students will be able to play a variety of games and snack on a variety of special treats including freshly made beavertails and baked goods in the French Café. United On-Site Printers will sell Northeastern spirit wear at the Fun Fair. The Best Start Hub at Northeastern will set up an information display.
Pinecrest Public School
On Tuesday, May 3rd, from 9:15 am to 11:45 am, Pinecrest Public School will host a career day for students with a number of guests from the community.
On Thursday, May 5th, Grade 4 and 5 students from Redwood Acres Public School will be at Pinecrest to watch the school’s two rock bands perform from 9:15 am to 10:15 am. At 6 pm, a second performance will take place for parents/guardians.
Queen Elizabeth Public School
To celebrate Education Week, students at Queen Elizabeth Public School will participate in Music Monday, with a musical presentation in the gym at 1:50 pm.
Constable Julie Medina will share street proofing tips with Early Learning to Grade 6 students on Monday, May 2nd, 2011.
A Writers’ Gallery will be displayed in the gym for the week. Parents are invited to visit the Writers’ Gallery while dropping off or picking up students. They will have an opportunity to see samples of excellent writing.
Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres Public School will launch Education Week with an assembly to celebrate Music Monday at 1:30 pm in the gym. On Tuesday, May 3rd, the school will host a Primary Book Exchange, followed by a Junior Book exchange on Wednesday. Also on Wednesday, May 4th, Redwood Acres Public School will hold its 4th Annual Video Gala at 11:30 am in the school gym. This year’s theme is character development and all are welcome!
On Thursday, May 5th, the Welcome to Kindergarten Orientation session for new JK registrants and their parents will take place at 6 pm. The Grade 1, 1/2 and ISP classes will host a Mother’s Day Tea in the gym on Friday, May 6th at 9:30 am. The week will wrap up with a Jump Rope for Heart event from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm on Friday.
R.L. Beattie Public School
Parents will have many opportunities to visit R.L. Beattie Public School during Education Week.
On Monday, May 2nd, at 10 am, Beattie students and staff will celebrate the importance of music with a school-wide Music Monday assembly. Grade 5 students will present their Character Education in the Arts Composition “Cooperation” and various classes will showcase their musical talents.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, SK classes will welcome parents to the school to spend time with their children at the Reading Picnic/Booknique.
On Wednesday, May 4th in the afternoon and all day on Thursday, May 5th, the school will host a Scholastic Book Fair.
The Battle of the Books team will attend a Mini-Competition at Walden Public School on Wednesday, May 4th from 9 am to noon. They will compete against several schools in preparation for the Board-wide event later in May.
On Thursday, May 5th, teachers of primary classes will host a Read With Me activity from noon to 12:50 pm. Parents/grandparents and caregivers are invited to come in, cozy up, and share their favourite books with the children.
On Friday, May 6th, primary classes will focus on writing when they pair up with junior and intermediate classes to answer the question “What if ….?” They will write a paragraph together explaining their view of what R.L. Beattie Public School will look like in the future.
The R. L. Beattie Math Club will challenge students to answer a Math Problem of the Day and submit their answers. Students who solve the problems correctly will have their names entered into a draw for various literacy prizes.
R.H. Murray Public School
During Education Week, parents will have many opportunities to see the great things happening at R. H. Murray Public School.
On Tuesday, May 3th, new Junior Kindergarten students will participate in the Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session from 6 pm to 7 pm.
On Wednesday, May 4th, students will highlight their many artistic abilities at the annual talent show that will begin at 11:30 am.
On Friday, May 6th, students in the junior grades will take part in workshops at the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair at Laurentian University.
Valley View Public School
The Grade 1 class at Valley View Public School will receive a visit from a police officer and his canine partner at 9:15 am on Monday, May 2.
On Wednesday, May 4th, the students will get to meet a nurse at 9 am. On Thursday, May 5th, they will meet an electrical inspector to talk about learning and succeeding together.
Valley View Public School will host a Music Monday Concert at 11 am on May 2nd with bands from Pinecrest Public School, Copper Cliff Public School, Lively District Secondary School and the Valley View drum circle.
During the week, physical education classes will attempt to walk a total of 4,185 km, the distance between Val Caron and Hollywood.
Walden Public School
On Monday, May 2nd, classes will celebrate "Music Monday" by performing a variety of songs in the gym. Students will be united in song under the leadership of music teacher, Stacey Foy.
On Tuesday, May 3rd, Walden Public School will host a "Welcome to Kindergarten" orientation session from 9:15 am to 11:15 am. Parents who have children starting JK this fall received an invitation in the mail. New parents are also welcome to register and participate in the activities.
Walden Public School will host a Battle of the Books tournament in the gym on Wednesday, May 4th.
On Thursday, May 5th, students will participate in Jump Rope for Heart. Last year, Walden Public School was the top fundraising school in Northern Ontario. Staff and students hope to meet or exceed that goal this year.
Wanup Public School
On Tuesday, May 3rd, the Wanup Public School choir and the Algonquin Public School choir will perform a Spring Concert at the Westmount Retirement Residence. On Thursday, May 5th, Wanup Public School will host its Welcome to JK celebration. Parents/grandparents have been invited into class to read their favourite books.
Wembley Public School
On Monday, May 2nd, Wembley Public School will kick off Education Week with a presentation by 2011 RBC Olympian Jared MacLeod. Jared will speak to students in Grades 5 to 8 about the importance of staying in school. He will focus on character traits such as resilience, courage, cooperation and respect.
The Grade 4 students and their teacher have been working with community artist Pandora Topp and Arts Education Co-ordinator Ralph McIntosh since early March to prepare original works of art that communicate important messages of their own choosing. Most of the artistic representations focus on Character Education traits and issues of social justice, delivered through original songs, drama, dance, videos and the visual arts. The public concert will take place on Monday, May 2, 2011, in the Sheridan Auditorium at Sudbury Secondary School. The event will begin at 7 pm and there is no cost to attend. Donations will be accepted for a designated charity that supports children and youth. Everyone is welcome.
On Friday, May 6th, Wembley Public School will celebrate Music Monday with an afternoon concert. The concert will take place at 2 pm for one hour. Parents/gardians are invited to attend to celebrate Wembley’s great instrumental music program and primary choir.
S. Geiger Public School
Education Week celebrations will kick off on Wednesday, May 4th from 5 pm to 6:30 pm with a pirate themed evening called "Finding Treasure in Learning". Families will experience learning in a fun and innovative way through games and activities. Students who attend with their parents/guardians will be able to enter their names in a draw to win a free book. Parents and guardians will be able to purchase additional books at the Book Fair in the library.
S. Geiger Public School will host its annual Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Thursday, May 5th from 5 pm to 6 pm. Community partners have teamed up with the S. Geiger staff to share resources and experiences with pre-school children to begin their formal education with a foundation in literacy and numeracy. All children will receive a Welcome to Kindergarten bag filled with resources and have an opportunity to meet staff and friends.
Grade 7 and 8 students will attend the Trades/Career Day being presented by Espanola High School the morning of Wednesday, May 3rd.
Webbwood Public School
Education Week begins on Tuesday, May 3rd with a fun filled afternoon of educational games focused on making learning exciting. Festivities will start at 4:30 pm with a BBQ and wrap up around 5:30 pm with draws for prizes to support learning at home. Families will experience learning in a fun and innovative way through games and activities at the "We’re Game to Learn" event.
Grade 7 and 8 students will attend the Trades/Career Day being presented by Espanola High School on Wednesday, May 3rd.
Webbwood Public School will host its annual Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Thursday, May 5th from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm. Community partners have teamed up with the staff to share resources and experiences with pre-school children to begin their formal education with a foundation in literacy and numeracy. All children will receive a Welcome to Kindergarten bag filled with resources and have an opportunity to meet staff and friends.
Westmount Public School
Students will launch Education Week by participating in Music Monday.
Author Colleen Sydor will visit the school to deliver a reading workshop to students all day on Tuesday, May 3rd.
Westmount Public School will host a Family Fun Fair on Thursday, May 5th.
The teachers at Westmount Public School have invited parents into their classrooms for an educational activity involving Literacy, Math, Art or Technology.
SECONDARY
Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School
Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School invites the public to its annual Art Show and Coffee House. The show opens on Wednesday, May 4th, 2011 from 3 pm to 4 pm. The opening reception with coffee house will take place on Wednesday from 7 pm to 9 pm. The event continues on Thursday, May 5th from 9 am to 4 pm. Everyone is invited to bring family and friends for an evening filled with art and music. Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School is located at 275 Loach’s Road in Sudbury.
Lively District Secondary School
On Monday, May 2nd and Tuesday, May 3rd, Grade 7 and 8 classes will attend sessions with the Sudbury & District Health Unit School Team. The team will co-facilitate an interactive presentation with five Grade 12 students. The session will focus on self-esteem, growth, substance abuse, physical activity and nutrition.
On Thursday, May 5th at 1:15 pm, Chief of Police Frank Elsner will visit the school to discuss youth and drugs with students.
Also during Education Week, students will view a video featuring Nick Vijucic. Nick has no arms and no legs and shares his positive outlook on life. Based on the theme "Never give up", he talks about self-esteem and positive attitude and makes a general reflection on happiness in life.
