Nesbitt Nitros capture ALL top honours at Sudbury Regional Math Olympics
The Nesbitt Nitros Math Olympics Team captured top honours at the Sudbury Regional Math Olympics on April 30, 2010. It all added up to success for the Nesbitt Nitros!
The Grade 7 and 8 students from Carl A. Nesbitt Public School captured first, second and third place at the Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics at Lasalle Secondary School on Saturday, April 30, 2011.
A total of 22 teams from the Rainbow District School Board, the Sudbury Catholic District School Board and the Near North School Board challenged their problem-solving skills in team, individual and pair events. The first and second place teams from Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will compete in the All Ontario Math Olympics in Toronto on Saturday, June 4, 2011.
“We congratulate the students from Carl A. Nesbitt Public School for their tremendous showing once again this year,” says Rainbow District School Board Chair Tyler Campbell. “We also thank Jim Sutherland for his ongoing leadership and dedication as a long-time coach of the team. He has enabled students to hone their math skills at a competitive level, with impressive results, year after year.”
The Northern Ontario Mathematics Association (NOMA), a group of dedicated educators who volunteer their time and energy to support math education, hosted the event. NOMA is the local chapter of the Ontario Association for Mathematics Education.
“The Sudbury Regional Mathematics Olympics gave students an opportunity to use their mathematical skills in a fun way,” says NOMA President Cheryl Geoghegan. “It was great to see so many students on a Saturday morning happy and excited to do math. This event fosters a sense of team work, an appreciation for mathematics, and an opportunity for collaboration, competition and camaraderie for each participant.” She added: “We extend our congratulations to the students from Carl A. Nesbitt Public School and wish the provincial competitors ongoing success as they challenge mathletes from across Ontario.”
