June 15: Alexander Public School hosts its first Diversity Day

Alexander Public School will host its first Diversity Day on Wednesday, June 15, 2011 from 11:15 am to 12:45 pm. Following an interactive “Amazing Race” format, teams of students in Grades 4 to 8 will visit stations to gather information or complete activities to gain passport stamps.

Participating organizations include the CNIB, L’Arche Sudbury, the Elgin Street Mission, the N’Swakamok Native Friendship Centre, the Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School Gay/Straight Alliance, the Sudbury Multicultural Association, the Greater Sudbury Police Service, Sudbury Interfaith Dialogue and many more.

“We want to build an awareness and appreciation of the diverse communities within Sudbury and the many community organizations who support them,” says Alexander Public School Principal Jacques Mantha.

"This is a wonderful opportunity to recognize these community groups as we promote a positive school climate where inclusion, empathy and acceptance are respected and valued,” says Principal Mantha. “Alexander Public School truly exemplifies a quality school where character counts and we look forward to celebrating our diversity on this special day.”

Principal Mantha praised the Grade 7 and 8 students for organizing Diversity Day along with Vice-Principal Rhonda Lennie. “Our student leaders have worked tirelessly to create maps, develop a budget, gather prizes, draw up schedules, design the games, write training manuals and develop a communications plan to make this day possible.  In the process, they have learned a great deal about diversity.”
