Sudbury Secondary School to host community tours February 21st

The community, including alumni, is invited to tour the new facilities at Sudbury Secondary School on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. An Information Night for Grade 8 students and their parents/guardians will follow the tour.

“With the renewal of Sudbury Secondary School, Rainbow District School Board marks another chapter in the revitalization of Rainbow Schools and reaffirms its commitment to ensuring students receive the best programming possible in quality school facilities,” said Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar. “Sudbury Secondary School enjoys a rich history in our community. It is well positioned for a bright and prosperous future.”

The renewal of Sudbury Secondary School began in September 2008 with the revitalization of the A wing which runs along Mackenzie Street. Upgrades included a displacement ventilation system, new energy efficient washrooms, lighting and boilers, new state-of-the-art science labs, a family studies area, sewing room, weight room, computer labs, upgraded classrooms with the latest in technology and cafeteria. An addition accommodates change rooms adjoining a newly renovated gymnasium.

Construction of the new arts wing began in June 2010 and was ready for occupancy in September 2011. The new arts wing has modern music rooms and studios for dance, drama, visual arts, photography and media arts. The arts wing also houses a new library, wood shop, auto shop and administration offices.

The arts wing is connected to the Sheridan Auditorium, which is also being upgraded as part of the school renewal project. Upgrades to the auditorium include a new entrance, new theatre-style seating and new lighting. A back of stage area is also being added to accommodate set changes and change rooms for student use.

Demolition of the B and C wings, which run along Baker and College Streets, occurred throughout the fall of 2011. Additional parking was added to Sudbury Secondary School as part of the renewal project. The school is also fully accessible.

“With more than 100 years of bringing learning to life, Sudbury Secondary School has built a solid reputation in the arts, athletics, academics and programs for students with special needs,” said Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “Renowned for its Arts Education Program, Sudbury Secondary School provides exceptional opportunities for students across Greater Sudbury to nurture their talents in music, dance, drama, media arts and visual arts. The enhanced learning environment, with the new arts wing, upgraded classrooms and the renovated community auditorium, will inspire students to continue to achieve their full potential and fulfill their aspirations.”

“At Sudbury Secondary School, we provide dynamic learning opportunities in English, French Immersion and Ojibwe,” said Principal Paul Camillo. He added: “Our Arts Education Program welcomes students from all schools. Our collaborative culture celebrates individuality and diversity. Our building blends old and new. Our school spirit embraces classroom and community. Our programs in academics, athletics and the arts are surpassed only by our exceptional students and staff.”

The new Sudbury Secondary School is more than bricks and mortar.

The exceptional facilities inside the building bring learning to life.

Arts Education Facilities

Modern music rooms and performing/visual arts studios provide students with an inspiring space in which to create and express themselves. Arts Education allows students with a strong interest in the arts to fulfill their secondary school graduation requirements while undertaking an in-depth study of one of the arts disciplines: Music (Vocal, Instrumental, Guitar), Drama, Dance, Visual Arts (including Photography and Fashion Design), and Media Arts (Film and Video). Related arts courses include Musical Theatre, Set Design and Construction, Sound and Lighting, Computer Arts, and Communications Technology.

Computer Labs

Students have access to computers for traditional tasks, such as research and writing, as well as more advanced applications, such as electronic imaging and digital design. PC and MAC hardware and software, with Internet access, promote creative thinking, enhance communications and develop technical skills. Assistive technology can be accessed both at school and home.

SMART Technology

Throughout the school, 15 SMARTboards are used in a variety of subject areas to project lessons on a big screen. Students interact with the technology, making learning fast-paced and fun. Teachers and students also have access to digital photo and video cameras, laptops, and other dynamic teaching tools.

Automotive and Construction Technology

The old shops have been replaced with new technology studies classes where students repair cars and complete woodworking projects. The facilities, with modern equipment, promote hands-on learning and give students an opportunity to try the trades.

Science Labs

Modern biology, chemistry, and physics labs, equipped with desks, sinks, microscopes and other scientific material, enable students to discover and explore.

Family Studies

A new foods lab and sewing room complement the programs in Family Studies and Hospitality, enabling students to gain important life skills.

Library

Sudbury Secondary School’s extensive collection of books, magazines, and other resources, including computers, has found a new home in a new library. The warm and welcoming space provides a perfect setting for reading, research and reflection.

Gymnasium

The renovated gymnasium features a cushioned floor, ideal for all forms of physical activity. It also has a variety of physical education equipment available for student use. An addition adjoining the gym accommodates new change rooms.

Fitness Room

The fitness room offers students access to their very own mini-gym right at school. Equipped with treadmills, elliptical machines and weights, students can work out at their leisure. The fitness room complements in-class courses on fitness, health and well-being.
