Rainbow Schools celebrate Music Monday on May 6, 2013

This year’s Music Monday song was co-written by Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield and Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies.

Music Monday marks the beginning of Education Week in Rainbow Schools.

Adamsdale Public School staff, students and special guests will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th with an assembly in the gym at 12:30 pm.  Students will share some of their ideas of what music means to them.  The Grade 6 Franco Rainbow group will present their third place winning lip sync performance.  Everyone will sing the Music Monday song – Is Somebody Singing.

Alexander Public School
students will celebrate Music Monday by singing the song "Is Somebody Singing" along with Commander Hadfield on the International Space Station at 1 pm. The Lockerby Composite School Senior Concert Band will visit the school to play the Music Monday song for students.  Students will return to their classrooms to sing the Music Monday song along with the simulcast. Students will then return to the gym where the band will play "How To Train Your Dragon".

The Master String Musicians Dick van Raadshooven (cello) and Christina Masotti (violin) will perform at Algonquin Road Public School on Music Monday.  Dick and Christina recently won a gold medal at the Moscow Stringed Instrument competition in 2011 and came in first at the Budapest Music Festival (duo category) earlier this year.  They are off to represent Canada in 2014 at the Lutenblag String Festival. The Globe and Mail recently reported that their "…tone is angelic and their sheer brilliant musicality is a joy to behold."

Students at Carl A. Nesbitt Public School will sing "Is Somebody Singing" in the schoolyard. They will sing along with Commander Hadfield on the International Space Station at 1 pm. Nesbitt Nitro student songwriters who created Nesbitt’s new school song will sing it for the first time to the school.  Families are encouraged to attend.

Charles C. McLean Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th with a performance in the gym at 1 pm.  Each class has prepared a special performance. Parents/guardians and community members have been invited to enjoy the entertainment, including singing and dancing.

Staff and students at Ernie Checkeris Public School will come together to celebrate Music Monday from 1:45 pm to 2:40 pm. They will be joined by the Nickel City Sound barbershop quartet. Families are welcome to attend the sing-a-long.

Students and staff at Churchill Public School will celebrate Music Monday with a concert in their gymnasium. The concert will feature class performances on the recorder, the ukulele, concert band instruments and acoustic guitars. The entire school will join together to sing this year’s Music Monday song, "Is Somebody Singing".

Gatchell School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th from 1:15 pm to 2 pm. Family members are welcome to join the students as they sing and play along with their "upcycled" musical instruments.

S. Geiger Public School students will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th.  Students will sing the Music Monday song by the Barenaked Ladies, "Is Somebody Singing". 

Lansdowne Public School will host a performance by Sudbury Secondary School from 10 am to 10:45 pm on Music Monday.

Larchwood Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th with a performance in the gym at 1:15 pm.  The performance will include a variety of acts including singing, gymnastics, juggling, and the playing of musical instruments. At 2 pm, the entire school will sing the Music Monday song "Is Somebody Singing". Parents, guardians and community members are invited to come out and enjoy the show.

On May 6th, Levack Public School students will highlight the vibrant instrumental music program that is being offered at the school with a Pop and Rock and Roll concert beginning at 1:45 pm. Musicians from Grades 1 to 8 will perform a variety of music with rock band instruments. In addition to a dedicated keyboard room, Levack Public School has a class set of guitars, brass instruments and drums, all of which will be showcased at the Music Monday event. Everyone is welcome.

MacLeod Public School will celebrate Music Monday in two ways. The annex staff and students will join in on the Canada wide song at noon. They will sing “Is Somebody Singing” by Ed Robertson of the Barenaked Ladies and Chris Hadfield, Canadian Astronaut and Commander of the International Space Station. The staff and students at the MacLeod main building will host a student concert led by Jack Broumpton. Students will sing, and play recorders, xylophones, hand drums and band instruments.

Markstay Public School will celebrate Music Monday on May 6th at 1:30 pm. The event will showcase student talent with singing, dancing and dramatic performances. Spectators will enjoy performances from students using Orff instruments, piano and vocals. Students have been busy rehearsing and parents and community members are welcome to join them in celebrating the gift of music and the arts.   

Pinecrest Public School will host an assembly in the gym to celebrate music in the school and focus on the importance of music education.  Students will watch a performance of this year’s Music Monday song, a small instrumental ensemble will perform, and the school’s Glee Club will deliver their rendition of Serena Ryder’s "Sing Sing".  The event will culminate with a slide show of photos taken during music classes this year.

Princess Anne Public School will celebrate Music Monday with a concert. Students from Sudbury Secondary School will perform for the entire school.

Queen Elizabeth Public School will host a Music Monday assembly. Each class will present a piece they have been working on. The whole group will watch the YouTube video of Chris Hadfield and Ed Robertson and sing the Music Monday song together.

Redwood Acres Public School will host a Music Monday concert featuring a sing-song with the entire school.  Songs will highlight space and earth in honour of the Music Monday song by Chris Hadfield. The concert will be held in the gym at 11:15 am.  Everyone is welcome.

R. H. Murray Public School will celebrate Music Monday with an air band presentation by the Grade 7/8 class and a cup band performance by the Grade 3/4 class.

R.L. Beattie Public School will host an assembly on Music Monday. The assembly will feature the Music Monday song as well as performances from the Franco Rainbow lip sync contest.

Walden Public School will host an assembly on Music Monday.  Classes will present a variety of performances from singing to personal compositions.  The entire school will sing Is Somebody Singing as the grand finale.

Webbwood Public School will host a Music Monday celebration the afternoon of May 6th. Students will share their special talents and the Music Monday song with parents and members of the community.

At Westmount Avenue Public School, the entire school will come together in the gym at 1:15 pm to sing "Toi et moi" (You and Me). The song reflects this month’s character trait "l’acceptation" (acceptance). 

The vocal and instrumental music students of Sudbury Secondary School will visit Lansdowne Public School and Princess Anne Public School to present an interactive concert that will include the Music Monday song “Is Somebody Singing” and other crowd pleasing performances.
