Carl A. Nesbitt Public School has answered the call to recycle old cell phones and placed second overall in North America in the Think Recycle Contest. For its efforts, the school has earned $500 for its charity of choice, the Breast Cancer Foundation.
“Our success is a tribute to the leadership of our custodian, Frank Katarincic, who has been spearheading the school’s recycling efforts for the past 10 years,” says Principal Terry Moss. “Near and dear to Frank’s heart is the pink ribbon campaign in the fight against breast cancer. To date, he has raised over $20,000 for the cause through a number of innovative events, including the recycling of old cell phones and other electronic waste.”
Frank Katarincic credits the school’s success in the Think Recycle Contest to the support of Carl A. Nesbitt Public School staff, students and parents/guardians as well as Rainbow District School Board staff and alumni. “Every year, I invite the community to drop off their old cell phones, cartridges and other e-waste for recycling,” he says. “It’s good for the planet and good for the school. More importantly, it has enabled us to raise funds and contribute to an important cause.”
At Carl A. Nesbitt Public School, Frank Katarincic is affectionately known as the King of Greenland. “Each and every year, he encourages students to think about how we recycle and what we recycle,” says Principal Moss. “He educates students about how our planet depends on our actions today for tomorrow.” Carl A. Nesbitt’s ‘Go Green’ team, which changes every year to ensure sustainability, collects recyclable items under Frank Katarincic’s guidance.
Recycling is one of many “Go Green” initiatives that he champions. He has also led schoolyard regreening efforts, which have engaged the entire school community. Frank Katarincic received a Rainbow District School Board Award for Excellence in 2005 and a Greater Sudbury Civic Award in 2012.
