Cyril Varney Public School is putting a new twist on nutrition breaks. Students still get to eat lunch, and they can continue to go outside if they wish, but they can also choose to get involved in some exciting new activities.
“We are always looking for what we can offer students to enhance their school experience and fulfill their potential,” says Principal Ron Hodkinson. “As a result, we are now giving students the opportunity to participate in six electives for 80 minutes a week.”
During nutrition breaks, Cyril Varney Public School is a hub of activity. Students in Grades 1 to 3 may be engaging in French cultural activities, gaining a foundation for the language. Students in Grades 3 to 6 may be learning how to play the guitar.
Other students may be taking art classes, working on character education initiatives, getting physically active with Varney Zumba (Vumba) or accessing the popular math and language computer programs, Dreambox and Lexia.
“We wanted to give our students an opportunity to take advantage of the expertise offered by staff here at Cyril Varney Public School,” says Principal Hodkinson. “Students enjoy taking part in fun activities during their nutrition breaks. They come back to class that much more focused on learning.”
