MacLeod Public School on Walford Road opened for partial occupancy after the March Break. JK to Grade 2 students and the daycare moved into the new facilities on March 17th. The school will be ready for full occupancy – JK to Grade 8 – for September 2014.
The Annex at the back of the school, where the students and the daycare were previously located, will be demolished this spring and work will begin on the playground area and surrounding grounds.
“This is another exciting chapter in the revitalization of Rainbow Schools,” said Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar. “The new MacLeod Public School is modern and bright, providing exceptional learning facilities for our students and staff. We look forward to welcoming all of the MacLeod children and families into their new school this fall.”
At full occupancy, the new MacLeod will accommodate some 600 students in approximately 60,000 square feet. The play area for children will be expanded to approximately 174,000 square feet. The school will also have a Best Start Hub.
There will be an Open House for registrations on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 (Earth Day) from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. Parents/guardians and children will have an opportunity to tour the Primary wing and gym. School Council members and staff will lead the tour.
“The new MacLeod Public School reaffirms our commitment to sustainability,” said Director of Education Norm Blaseg. “We have incorporated green features into the school to create learning and teaching spaces that are effective and efficient.” He added: “The new MacLeod Public School will provide the perfect environment to continue to foster a culture of conservation and encourage eco-friendly practices.”
Construction of a new green school on the MacLeod Public School site began in the spring of 2012. Green features include displacement ventilation and heat recovery systems, radiant floor heating, high insulation values in windows, walls and floors, and energy efficient plumbing and lighting fixtures. The roof will be constructed to allow for the installation of solar panels at a later date.
The main entrance of the school is located on Walford Road. A separate bus layby from Laval Street to Walford Road will greatly improve traffic flow in the area. There are also 93 parking spaces on site.
Grades 3 to 8 students are currently being accommodated at the former Wembley Public School (the MacLeod Wembley site).
The new MacLeod Public School is Rainbow District School Board’s third green school. Valley View Public School opened in the fall of 2007. Walden Public School opened in the fall of 2009.
