Gatchell School renamed in memory of former Director of Education Jean Hanson

Gatchell School has been renamed in memory of Jean Hanson, the former Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. Trustees unanimously approved the tribute at the regular Board meeting on April 29, 2014. Gatchell School will officially become Jean Hanson Public School at a dedication ceremony at the school on Monday, May 12th.

“Jean Hanson believed in children and their ability to achieve their full potential,” said Rainbow District School Board Chair Doreen Dewar. “Jean Hanson Public School will be a lasting legacy to an inspirational leader who put students first and foremost. An exemplary role model, she is the epitome of reaching minds and touching hearts.”
A dedicated educator and champion for children, Jean Hanson served as a Teacher, Special Education Consultant, Principal, Superintendent and the first female Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. She passed away February 3, 2014 following a courageous battle with cancer.
Jean Hanson began her career as a classroom teacher in 1970 at the Borough of York. She joined the Sudbury Board of Education in 1976 and was Principal of Gatchell School from 1987 to 1993, her first role as an administrator. She was appointed Rainbow District School Board’s Director of Education on January 1st, 2004. She retired from the Board in June 2010 with 40 years of distinguished service in public education.
Jean Hanson will long be remembered for her focus on student success through special education, early learning, cultural understanding, character development, sustainability and the revitalization of Rainbow Schools.
