Rainbow Schools celebrate Education Week from May 5 to 9, 2014

Rainbow Schools will mark Education Week from May 5 to 9, 2014. “Education Week provides a wonderful opportunity to celebrate teaching excellence, student achievement, parental involvement and exceptional community support in Rainbow Schools,” says Norm Blaseg, Director of Education for Rainbow District School Board. This year’s theme is Achieving Excellence in Education / Atteindre l’excellence en éducation.

ELEMENTARY

A.B. Ellis Public School
On Tuesday, May 6, and Thursday, May 8, from 9:30 am to 10:30 am, new Junior Kindergarten students will have the opportunity to engage in Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) activities. This event is open to the public. Grade 7 and 8 female students are encouraged to take part in a series of self-image workshops on Tuesday, May 6 – “Empowering Girls” with Anna Barsanti of the Greater Sudbury Police Youth Initiative at 11:30 am, “Beautiful You” at 4 pm and “Feeling Beautiful” at 4 pm. From 5 pm to 6:30 pm, a “Tools for Change” workshop will take place for parents and students in Grades 4 to 6. This workshop is a partnership between A.B. Ellis Public School and the Sudbury & District Health Unit.

On Wednesday, May 7, at 9 am, A.B. Ellis Public School will host award winning young adult author, Karen Bass, in celebration of Education Week and TD Canadian Children’s Book Week. During her visit to A.B. Ellis Public School, Karen Bass will share readings from three of her award winning Canadian books and discuss the writing and publishing process with students in Grades 6 to 8. The presentation will also include aspects of World War II and discuss the origins of these three novels.

Students in Grade 8 will attend the Espanola High School Trades Day on Thursday, May 8.

Alexander Public School
On Monday, May 5, some 60 students from Alexander Public School will join Lasalle Secondary School to celebrate Music Monday.

Stan Peltier will visit Alexander Public School to share a variety of Ojibwe teachings on Tuesday, May 6.

Throughout the week, students will share and reflect on the importance of having the privilege of an education.

All classes will have a special day planned during Education Week, which will include inviting parents to participate in learning and creative writing activities, and reading at Bell Park.

Assiginack Public School
Assiginack Public School students will participate in Music Monday presentations at Manitoulin Secondary School on Monday, May 5.

On Tuesday, May 6, Intermediate students will attend a ballet performance at Manitoulin Secondary School, while junior students will be hosted by the Little Current & District Fish & Game Club. The students will visit the Sheguiandah Bay/Bass Creek Fish Hatchery to learn about walleye.

Singer, songwriter Errol Lee will educate students on character education, bullying prevention, and equity and inclusion, through a series of workshops on Wednesday, May 7. Parents are invited to attend daytime workshops.

The community is invited to an evening of education, dance and songs with Errol Lee on Thursday, May 8 in the school gym. Doors open at 6 pm and the concert begins at 6:30 pm. Light refreshments will be served.

Carl A. Nesbitt Public School
Carl A. Nesbitt Public School students will enjoy a series of activities in celebration of Education Week.

On Monday, May 5, at 11:30 am, all classes will perform their lip-synch choice for Music Monday and Franco Nesbitt. The winners will advance to the championships on Wednesday, May 21 at Sudbury Secondary School’s Sheridan Auditorium.

Sudbury Wolves Alumni Connor Burgess will team up with Grade 4 students on Tuesday, May 6, for some healthy/active living exercises and art from 11:15 am to 1 pm.

Grade 7 and 8 students will enjoy a special Live Different presentation on Wednesday, May 7. Following this, Grade 8 students will visit Lasalle Secondary School for an information session about the Sport and Healthy, Active Living Program from noon to 2 pm.

Grade 7 and 8 students will co-ordinate RightToPlay on Thursday, May 8 starting at noon. This Canada wide initiative uses sport and play to educate and empower children and youth.

On Thursday, May 8, at 9:30 am, "Jou Tou" will present a global and cosmopolitan perspective of French music.  Some songs will be in the familiar folk traditions of Quebec and France, while others include music from Camarque and Morocco.

On Wednesday, May 14, at 8 am, Grade 7 and 8 Enriched Math students will take part in the Gauss Math Contest with instructor Jim Sutherland.

Charles C. McLean Public School
Charles C. McLean Public School students will participate in a Music Monday concert at Manitoulin Secondary School on Monday, May 5.

Grade 1 to 3 students will visit Manitoulin Secondary School to watch a ballet performance on Tuesday, May 6.

Students and staff are excited to welcome Errol Lee to Charles C. McLean Public School on Friday, May 9. Errol Lee will deliver a presentation focused on assisting students with developing character traits such as honesty, respect, optimism and empathy. The presentation will begin at 1:30 pm and the public is invited to attend.

Central Manitoulin Public School
Central Manitoulin Public School students will have numerous opportunities to work toward achieving excellence in education through environmental education, literacy, numeracy, character education and the arts.

Students will attend a Music Monday concert at Manitoulin Secondary School on Monday, May 5. Central Manitoulin Public School’s Grade 8 percussion ensemble, who received gold standard and additional accolades at the Kiwanis Music Festival, will perform.

The Grade 4/5 class will participate in an environmental initiative sponsored by the Little Current & District Fish & Game Club in Sheguindah.

Primary students will attend the ballet performance “Pinnochio” on Tuesday, May 6 at Manitoulin Secondary School. Central Manitoulin Public School will host a Welcome to Kindergarten session that same evening between 5 pm and 6 pm. The public is welcome to attend.

Parents and students will enjoy a character education concert by performer Errol Lee on Wednesday, May 7. The concert will take place in the school gym starting at 9:30 am.

Central Manitoulin Public School will host the intermediate Island soccer tournament on Thursday, May 8. The junior soccer teams will be travelling to Lakeview for the tournament.

The Early Learning Kindergarten staff will participate in a workshop for developing resiliency in children on Thursday, May 8. The workshop is being delivered in partnership with Manitoulin Family Resources.

Chelmsford Public School
Chelmsford Public School invites parents and students to the Scholastic Book Fair that will take place from Monday, May 5 to Friday, May 9 in the school library.

New Junior Kindergarten students and parents are invited to a Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Tuesday, May 6 from 6 pm to 7 pm. There will be fun activities, snacks and a short school bus ride around the neighbourhood.

On Wednesday, May 7, Chelmsford Public School will showcase student creativity at a Talent Show. There will be two events, one at 1:30 pm and another at 6:30 pm.

Copper Cliff Public School
Copper Cliff Public School will celebrate excellence in education with the Fourth Annual Milligan/McKinnon Community Cleanup on Friday, May 2 at 10:30 am.  The school invites the community to join them in keeping Copper Cliff garbage free.

On Monday, May 5, the Copper Cliff Public School Senior Choir, Concert Band and two handchime groups will join with other Rainbow elementary schools at Lively District Secondary School to celebrate Music Monday. All students will sing “Is Somebody Singing?” together at 1 pm. It’s sure to be a wonderful celebration of music.

Copper Cliff Public School’s Scholastic Book Fair Fiesta will run from Tuesday, May 6 to Thursday, May 8 in the library.

Students can bring a favorite gently used book they have finished reading to trade for other used books during the Gently-Used Book Exchange from Tuesday, May 6 through Thursday, May 8.

On Friday, May 9, Early Learning Kindergarten students will invite their mothers in for a "book-nic" to read and enjoy lunch together from noon until 1 pm.

Cyril Varney Public School
Cyril Varney Public School will launch the Color House System for character education and school spirit on Monday, May 5.

Parents are invited to spend some time reading with their children from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm on Tuesday, May 6. The school will host a Welcome to Kindergarten evening between 6 pm and 7:30 pm. The public is welcome to attend.

A school Book Fair will take place all day in the computer room on Wednesday, May 7. Good character messages and “Pay it Forward” will be the school theme and students will create positive messages about classmates in all grades. Messages will line the school hallways.

Education Week will bring a series of activities for students at Ernie Checkeris Public School.

On Monday, May 5 at 2 pm, students will sing “Is Somebody Singing” in the school gym to celebrate Music Monday. Junior and Senior Kindergarten classes will visit Science North all day.

Greater Sudbury Regional Police Constable, Cheryl Kennelly, will provide information sessions to several classes on Tuesday, May 6 from noon to 3 pm.

Lansdowne Public School students will participate in Music Monday on Monday, May 5 at Sudbury Secondary School.

During their second nutrition break, parents are invited to participate in a Mental Math Lunch and Learn on Tuesday, May 6. The Primary session will take place in the library and the Junior/Intermediate session will take place in Monique Trottier’s classroom.

Parents are invited to visit their child’s classroom at noon on Tuesday, May 6 for some family math games fun and healthy snacks.

Lansdowne Public School will host a Welcome to Kindergarten session at 5:30 pm on Tuesday, May 6. The public is welcome to attend.

On Wednesday, May 7, a volunteer/student Snack Program luncheon will take place from 12:55 pm to 1:55 pm and pop-up library visits will take place at the Greater Sudbury Public Library.

A city-wide clean up blitz will take place Thursday, May 8. The Grade 6/7/8, 7 and 8 classes will clean up Lansdowne Street and students from Kindergarten to Grade 6 will clean up the schoolyard. The City of Greater Sudbury will supply safety vests, garbage bags and gloves.

Grade 4 students will participate in the Sudbury Regional Heritage Fair on Friday, May 9. “Jou Tou” will perform for the entire school at 1:45 pm.

Larchwood Public School
Students, staff and School Council members have organized a number of Education Week activities to showcase student achievement at Larchwood Public School.

On Thursday, May 8, students will present Larchwood’s Got Talent at 1:35 pm in the school gym, where students will sing, dance and play musical instruments. The public is welcome to attend.

A spring Book Fair will take place in the school during Education Week. Parents and community members are invited to visit the school to purchase books. All proceeds from the book fair will go towards enhancing classroom libraries.

Little Current Public School
On Monday, May 5th, the Little Current Public School choir will perform at Manitoulin Secondary School as part of Music Monday.  The students in Grades 1 to 3 will present an Art Show at 1:30 pm in the gymnasium.  Grade 4 students will participate in a field trip to the Fish Hatchery in Sheguiandah.
On Tuesday, May 6th, students will have a dress rehearsal for the Spring Concert.
There will be two performances of the Spring Concert on Wednesday, May 7th – 11:30 am and 6 pm.  A book fair will take place in the library all day from 9 am to 8 pm.
On Thursday, May 8th, the Little Current Public School soccer teams will take part in the Island Soccer Tournament being held all day at Central Manitoulin Public School (Intermediate team) and in Wikwemikong at Pontiac School (Junior Team).
On Friday, May 9th, the school will celebrate Diversity Day and will host a perfomance by Errol Lee.  His encouraging concert builds self-esteem and fosters a caring community.
MacLeod Public School
On Monday, May 5, the students at the new MacLeod Public School on Walford Road will gather together to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of Music Monday and join in the nation-wide webcast to sing "Is Somebody Singing", written by Canadian Astronaut Chris Hadfield.
Math will be the focus on Tuesday, May 6 when the teachers and students of the Wembley site will invite family members to join them for a three-part math lesson or a mental math mini-lesson at noon. 
Continuing the celebration of Earth Week, families of the Walford site will take part in a Book Swap on Thursday, May 8.  Gently used books will find a new home to be enjoyed once again.
On Friday, May 9, the students of the Walford site and their family members will take part in a Book-nic.  Stories, snacks, picnic blankets and loved ones will continue to foster a life-long love of reading.

Monetville Public School
On Monday, May 5, students from Monetville Public School will participate in a concert at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School to celebrate Music Monday. Grades 1 to 3 students will sing “The Cat Came Back” while Grades 4 to 6 students will sing jambalaya. All students will participate in a sing-along to the official Music Monday song “Is Somebody Singing.”

Monetville Public School will host a Welcome to Kindergarten (WTK) orientation session on Tuesday, May 6, from 5 pm to 6:30 pm. Parents, new students and the public is welcome to participate in a variety of school readiness activities.

Northeastern Elementary School
Parents of Northeastern Elementary School are invited to participate in Zumba with their children from 9 am to 9:30 am on Monday, May 5 and Tuesday, May 6.

Northeastern Elementary School is pleased to host its fourth annual Exceptional Students Awareness Day on Thursday, May 8th. Students will learn more about human conditions, abilities and success while increasing their empathy and respect for everyone in their world community.  Students will learn about different types of abilities and disabilities through various presentations, including autism, Special Olympics, music therapy and the C.N.I.B.

On Friday, May 9th from 2 pm to 2:45 pm, Northeastern’s Early Learning Kindergarten classes and the French Immersion SK/1 class will host a tea with treats and performances. Students have been asked to invite a special lady to attend the tea, such as moms, step-moms, grandmas, aunties, big sisters, etc.

Queen Elizabeth Public School
Queen Elizabeth II Public School students from JK to Grade 3 will take part in a special Music Monday celebration at Sudbury Secondary School on Monday, May 5. The group will perform "Everybody Has Music Inside" and all students will sing "Is Somebody Singing?"

A Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session will take place on Wednesday, May 7 from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. The public is welcome to attend.

Queen Elizabeth II Public School will host a Family Reading Picnic on Thursday, May 8 between 1:05 pm and 1:45 pm.

Redwood Acres Public School
Redwood Acres students will kick off Education Week with Music Monday on Monday, May 5, at 9 am with a video presentation in the gym. The video will highlight the music program at Redwood Acres and will also feature a live performance of students singing "Is Somebody Singing?" The public is welcome to attend.

In the afternoon, Grade 5 students will visit Confederation Secondary School for a concert of songs by the Beattles.

Redwood Acres will host a Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Tuesday, May 6, for parents/guardians and the public from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm. New registrations are welcome.  All participants will receive a bag of great resources to support their children at home as they prepare to start school in the fall.

The annual Fun Fair will be held on Thursday, May 15 with a barbecue beginning at 5:30 pm. The public is welcome to enjoy games, a penny table, bake sale, jazzy jars and more.

R.L. Beattie Public School
Each day throughout Education Week, classes will participate in a school-wide Math Challenge. All participating classes who complete the challenges will receive a prize at the end of the week.

R.L. Beattie Public School’s Grade 7 and 8 concert band, The Band of Barons and The Barontones, will perform at Lo-Ellen Park Secondary School on Monday, May 5 on Music Monday. Various classes from Grades 2 to 8 will be in attendance.

On Thursday, May 8, R.L. Beattie will host a Math Mania day. Parents are invited to attend and play a math game with their children. This event will run from 1:50 pm to 2:30 pm.

Grade 5 students will host a multicultural lunch on Thursday, May 8 at 1:10 pm during the second nutrition break.

On Thursday, May 8 and Friday, May 9, R.L. Beattie will host a Scholastic book fair. Children and parents are invited to purchase books in the school’s downstairs meeting room.

On Friday, May 9, students are invited to participate in a book exchange for the love of reading.

S. Geiger Public School
Parents are invited to participate in numeracy and mathematical development activities on Monday, May 5 from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. A barbecue and book fair will kick off the evening. The public is welcome to attend.

On Wednesday, May 7, students will engage in a variety of fire safety demonstrations from local fire department representatives.

S. Geiger Public School staff and community partners will host a Welcome to Kindergarten orientation session on Wednesday, May 7 from 5 pm to 6 pm. The Sudbury Students Services Consortium will deliver a brief presentation on how to ride the school bus safely and students will practice getting on and off the bus.  The public is welcome to attend.

Grade 8 students will travel to Espanola High School on Thursday, May 8, to participate in Trades Day. Students will tour the school, learn about school programs and meet staff members to help with the transition to secondary school.

Valley View Public School
The week of May 5 to 9, 2014, Valley View Public School students will hear daily morning announcements about education.

To celebrate Education Week, Denise Fraser of the Greater Sudbury Police Service will deliver a presentation to students about respect and the law, on Monday, May 5. Students will also participate in an interview writing project, comparing the Ontario education system to education systems from around the world.

Students in Grades 7 and 8 will participate in Music Monday at Confederation Secondary School on Monday, May 5 where Valley View’s school band will perform.

On Tuesday, May 6, students will take part in Hip Hop/Zumba.

Grade 2 students will visit a nursing home on Wednesday, May 7, and the entire school will read with reading buddies for 45 minutes.

Students in Grades 1 to 4 will watch “Le vilain petit canard” on Thursday, May 8.

Friday, May 9 will bring lots of fun for students, including Education Week team activities for primary students, mystery reader’s workshops, where community members visit the school and read to classrooms, and a school walk that will be a kick off to Fitness Fridays.

Walden Public School
On Monday, May 5, the Glee Club, Guitar Club, Chime group and choir will celebrate Music Monday by performing a variety of songs in the gym at Lively District Secondary School.

Walden Public School will host Franco-Walden on Tuesday, May 6, a lip-synch competition for students studying French as a Second Language. The public is welcome to attend this fun, cultural celebration.

On Thursday, May 8 at 5:30 pm, Pierre Harrison from the PlayLearnThink organization will host a play-based science activity in the gym for JK to Grade 3 students. This event has been made possible through a Parents Reaching Out Grant provided by the Ministry of Education’s Parent Engagement Office.

Jump Rope for Heart will take place on Friday, May 9. Students hope to meet the Walden Public School goal of $14,000, to maintain their status as the top fundraising school in all of northern Ontario.

Webbwood Public School
Webbwood Public School will kick off Education Week on Monday, May 5 with a Music Monday celebration and Book Fair. During the evening, a community group will host a concert, with proceeds going to the Webbwood Public School breakfast program.

Grade 8 students will travel to Espanola High School on Thursday, May 8, to participate in Trades Day. Students will tour the school, learn about school programs and meet staff members to help with the transition to secondary school.

The week will conclude with a Welcome to Kindergarten session on Friday, May 9 at 9 am. The public is welcome to attend.

Westmount Avenue Public School
In celebration of Westmount Avenue Public School’s 45 years in education, the Grade 1 class will present a magic show and art display for parents.

Grade 2 students will participate in a reading buddy program with the Junior and Senior Kindergarten students. The Fire Department will deliver a presentation on fire safety to Kindergarten students.

SECONDARY

Chelmsford Valley District Composite School
Chelmsford Valley District Composite School will celebrate career awareness during Education Week. Students will engage in a series of presentations to help them learn about various career options that are available.

Lasalle Secondary School
Students from the Grade 10 Sport and Healthy, Active Living Program at Lasalle Secondary School will host a Wellness Day on Wednesday, May 7th from 9 am to 2 pm.  All Grade 9 and 10 students will participate in the morning. More than 200 Grade 8 students from Markstay Public School, Churchill Public School, Carl A. Nesbitt Public School and Northeastern Elementary School will participate in the afternoon. The goal is to highlight the benefits and importance of a lifelong commitment to maintaining a healthy, active lifestyle, with a focus on careers that require an ongoing level of fitness and health. Presenters include a physiotherapist, kinesiologist, nurse, massage therapist, chiropractor, zumba instructor, paramedic, dietician, mental health nurse, social worker, gymnastics coach, nutritionist, and an athletic therapist.

Lively District Secondary School
Lively District Secondary School will host a special Music Monday celebration on Monday, May 5 from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the school gym. Musicians from Copper Cliff Public School, R.H. Murray Public School, Walden Public School and Lively District Secondary School will participate. Performances will include concert bands, chimes groups, a choir, and percussion and guitar ensembles.

Students and staff will host the annual Spring Concert featuring the Intermediate Concert Band, Intermediate Rock Band and the Senior Rock Band. The first of two concerts will take place from 9:30 am to 11 am for Walden Public School’s Grade 1 to 6 students. The second show is open to the public and will run from 7 pm to 9 pm.
