Students from Rainbow Schools attend D-Day ceremony at Juno Beach in France
Students from Lasalle Secondary School and Confederation Secondary School will pay homage to Canadians who valiantly lost their lives in World War I and World War II when they attend the D-Day ceremony at Juno Beach in France on Friday, June 6th, 2014.
The group of students, accompanied by teachers, parents, grandparents, and alumni, will leave Sudbury on Friday, May 30th. The 10-day historic tour will take them to Berlin, Germany where they will visit Checkpoint Charlie and Amsterdam in the Netherlands where they will tour Anne Frank’s house.
They will then go on to Belgium, then France where they will visit Vimy Ridge, Normandy and Juno Beach. The delegation from Sudbury will attend the 70th Anniversary D-Day Commemorative Ceremony at Juno Beach with over 1,000 other students and veterans from across Canada.
A local war veteran will join the students to share his personal account of what happened during this historic period. Together, they will visit Reichswald Forest War Cemetery in Germany, where his brother who fought in World War II is buried.
This excursion will be an opportunity for students to see first-hand what they have been learning about in history class and to be part of history in the making.
The local legions and the City of Greater Sudbury have donated wreaths to be placed at Cenotaphs at the various ceremonies that the students will be attending.
